There will be a poetry reading/open mic on April 25 and, coming up on May 16, there'll be a reading of Norwegian poetry as part of our conjunction with the annual Syttende Mai celebration in Spring Grove, MN.

Whitman's genius, passions, poetry, and androgynous sensibilities came together to create new verse for a new world in 1871.

With the slim, self-published edition of poems called "Leaves of Grass", Walt Whitman emerged as America's first true poet.

Walking is one of the main gaits of locomotion ...typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the passive limb or limbs with each step.

So how did Whitman walk? Your guess is as good as mine. I'm thinking it was bold, yet sensitive to the gravity and pulse of this crazy granite planet.

"I believe," said Walt, stepping gently, that "a leaf of grass is no less than the journey work of the stars..."

Yeah, watch yr step, let’s be one with grass.

Really, let's all walk like Walt. June 13 is all about Walt Whitman. Read some Whitman, wear Whitmanesque garb. Do a barbaric yawp. Walk the walk June 13, yeah! "Walk Like Whitman" a/k/a "Walk Like Walt" --the new sensation. Search your heart, stride right, it's sweeping the nation. June 13. Do it for mama.

There will be a staging area for the walk just outside the Midtown Scholar Bookstore, (717 236-1680) where the readings will transpire. Members of the Almost Uptown poetry cartel will attend to your questions and safety concerns.

The spirit of Walt Whitman will surely guide your feet.

Our PoetryThursdays reading series will celebrate its ten-year anniversary later in 2019. The series began in a small coffeehouse in Midtown and continued through numerous downtown and suburban venues.

Heather H. Thomas does it again!

Her new book Vortex Street (available at Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown) spirals from the poet’s riverside home across the globe, trailing patterns “behind a poet who stands bluntly amid the fluid of life.” The book includes poems translated into Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish, and Italian and has been praised as a "masterful collection . . . in a compassionate and intimate voice.”

Heather lives in Reading, PA, along the Schuylkill River, where her vortex street begins. An award-winning poet, she taught creative writing and literature for many years at Kutztown University and now teaches at Cedar Crest College. Vortex Street is her seventh book. Poetry Thursdays at Midtown Scholar: Marty Esworthy and Erika Eberly are featured August 16,

Erika Eberly grew up in suburban Maryland and went to High School in nearby Westminster. Eberly has been writing and reading poetry for years as well as being actively involved in various arts pursuits. She always wanted to be a performer and has worked in numerous dance and theater presentations, most recently performing with Narcisse Theatre Company in Harrisburg.

Marty Esworthy’s has published verse in Haggard & Halloo, text TOWER, Literary Chaos, Fledgling Rag, and the International Digest of World Poetry. Recent Books include hard reality, Pacobooks, 2004, and The Object Stares Back, Uh-Oh! - T&T Press, 2009.

Twenty-Six Javanese Proverbs was awarded the 2006 R.E.Foundation Award for Outstanding Poetry, Iris G. Press, 2006. Esworthy’s latest work is After the Aughts, Lost Alphabet, 2018.

July 26, Michael R. Brown reads at Midtown Scholar Bookstore

Michael R. Brown will be featured poet, July 26 at the Midtown Scholar in Harrisburg.on July 26.

Brown was born in Philadelphia in the first half of the last century. He grew up in Marietta and Columbia and graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School.

Michael has had four books of poetry published: Falling Wallendas, Tia Chucha (1994); The Man Who Makes Amusement Rides, Hanover Press (2003); Susquehanna, Ragged Sky (2003); The Confidence Man, Ragged Sky (2007).

Michael joined the slam poetry movement in Chicago and spread the phenomenon throughout New England. He and Patricia Smith established The Cantab (1992) in Cambridge, MA, carried the slam to Sweden, and led a US national championship team in 1993. He and Erkki Lappalainen organized the first Poetry Olympics in Stockholm in 1998. He also created Dr. Brown’s Traveling Poetry Show, a two-hour theater production.

From 2008 until 2016, he and his wife Valerie Lawson released Off the Coast, an international poetry quarterly. In 2017 they established Resolute Bear Press, which published a book of his political poems, The Martin Bormann Dog Care Book and her 3 Nations Anthology with writing from Canada, Native American people, and New Englanders.
