How to study grammar in a foreign language

I have studied grammar in French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese and Russian, so I’m basing this off of my experiences with that. I’m going to preface this by saying that in order to study grammar fairly quickly and effectively, you’re going to need to put the work in. Yes, you can learn grammar through conversation and making mistakes, but frankly, it will take a lot longer, and will be a lot more confusing. Grammar is hard and often boring, but it’s necessary.

Do practice questions! This is honestly your best option. Get a workbook (you can probably find loads of PDFs online, like on Z-library), and work through the questions without checking your notes.

Make your notes as minimal as you can! Just write down the essentials, which is usually the structure, when you use the structure and some example sentences. It’s tempting to write down what the textbook says word for word, but it’s a waste of time.

Make your own example sentences! Use your own vocabulary, even if it’s limited, to make your own sentences in the language. If you can do this accurately, then that’s a sign that you do know the structure.

Get corrections! You can use HiNative, or ask a native speaker. It’s important to know where you’re going wrong, so you can target your weaknesses later.

Write! This is the best, honestly. Writing is a fairly complex and necessary way of demonstrating your understanding of grammar, and it’s easy to see where you are going wrong when you write. You can use a site like Journaly to get corrections.

Do translations! Get an article or short story, and try translating a paragraph into your target language (make sure to get corrections). Look up vocabulary you don’t know, as that isn’t the most important thing in this exercise.

Drill your irregular verbs! Use flashcards, write them over and over again, however you do it, just get them stuck in your head.

Make a cheat sheet! I did this with French and it worked wonders. I recommend just doing it to review rules that you at least have a vague idea about.

Ask questions! If you have a teacher, or a native friend, ask them for help understanding grammar. You can also use online forums.

Use formulae! If you have a fairly logical brain, then it might make sense for you to write your notes using this format.

Read more! Input is EVERYTHING. Reading more books and articles in your target language will expose you more to grammar in it’s natural state, and that will really improve your grammar.

Be aware of when you use certain grammar rules! Ask questions, make your notes and practice loads. It’s really important to be solid in your knowledge of the usage of a grammar rule.

Regularly review! You can look at your notes, or do some online quizzes. Just make sure you’re regularly refreshing your memory.

Hello guys! I was thinking that I never made a 한글 post before, because I started this blog already knowing it, but I thought it could be useful for anyone that is just starting! So I hope you like it and it’s useful ^^

DISCLAIMER: I don’t use romanization in any of the posts, and my best advice about it is to avoid it except when you are learning the alphabet. In my opinion it’s the best way to learn and remember the sound of each letter when you aren’t too used to only use the 한글.

1. Basics

First of all, 한글 is basically the Korean alphabet and it has 40 letters, 19 consonants and 21 vowels. As you can see it’s written in blocks that can go from 2 (minimum) to 4 (maximum) letters, for example:

2 letters: 가

3 letters: 감

4 letters: 값

And these blocks have a rule: they always start with a consonant. If the word you are writing starts with a vowel, then you will use a special consonant that is ㅇ and will be silent (if it goes anywhere else then it will have a sound, but we will see that later), for example, 아, 어, 우.

2. Vowels

They can be divided in 3 sections:

1) Plain: as you can notice there are vertical and horizontal ones.

2) Y semivowels: there is a total of 6 of these that start with a “y-” sound. They are called semivowels because they basically grab the vowels we just learned (except for ㅣand ㅡ) and add the “y-” sound to them:

3) W semivowels: they are a little more complicated than the previous ones since they combine a vertical vowel with a horizontal one, adding a “w-” sound to it.

Note: nowadays 외, 왜 and 웨 are pronounced the same, but you have to learn them anyway.

3. Consonants

Also divided in 3 sections:

1) Plain:

Note: you don’t need to learn the name of the consonants, but I write them anyway just in case you wanna learn it too

2) Tense or double consonants: they are simply the consonants you just learned but written twice. They have a more strong and direct sound, like if you were shooting the words out of your mouth to say it in some way lol, have that in mind when you read the examples

3) Aspirated consonants: they are easy to distinguish cause they add an “extra line” to the plain consonants. The sound, in this case, would be like if you try to make the shooting sound of before while inhaling or running out of air (does it make sense?)

4. Writing: so now that you already know the alphabet, now it’s time to learn how to write! You need to follow these 2 rules:

go from left to right

go from top to bottom

If you have 3 or 4 letters into a block, then you write the 2 letters on top from left to right, and then the letter (or 2 letters) from left to write.

5. Recommendation: to practice all this I used the app “Korean Letter - Learn Hangul Korean Alphabet” while I was learning. It has audios included and the full view of the whole alphabet

*side note: these sentences aren't conjugated. this is the plain, unconjugated form and It's not typically used when speaking in Korean. I used it in this part of the post, so that the focus can be on the sentence structure and not the conjugations. Just incase there are learners who are still learning or struggling with conjugations.

1.) Subject + Noun

> 저는 학생이다 - I am a student

학생 = student

이다 = to be

2.) Subject + Verb

> 저는 공부하다 - I study/ I am studying

공부하다 = to study

3.) Subject + Adjective

> 여자는 예쁘다 - The woman Is pretty

여자 = woman

예쁘다 = to be pretty

4.) Subject + Object + Verb

> 저는 한국어를 공부하다 - I study Korean

한국어 = korean (language)

You can make full sentences without the subject but only when It's obvious to the other person or people your talking to

(저는) 학생이다
