Where do I begin (Vita Nova Taxidermy)

Alright, where do I begin on this... Nakomii/Marissa "Mars" Hernandez/Vita Nova Taxidermy. In short, has ruined our community. I will state here, if you are brought up in this journal, as a victim....

I know very well I’m probably going to lose a bunch of followers over posting this but this is a buyer’s beware which I have posted taxidermy ones in the past before. Its definitely one that should be seen and is a very detailed one as there are many accounts on it.  I also have some involvement in this as mentioned in the journal.

Another update:

Someone did an unboxing of one the mounts they received recently.  While this one is not nearly as bad as some of the other mounts people have gotten that were plagued with issues, the condition the coyote came in is still pretty bad especially with holes in the muzzle that are easy fixes.

Really I can go into in depth on this but the video alone does a good job on that.

A very unique Coydog that was up for sale on Taxidermy.net that was trapped.  This one has to be by far the most unique coydog I’ve seen and also sold for a pretty penny.

This is why coyotes are unique.

That coydog been long gone since a friend of mine bought him several years ago while I ended up getting the black coyote in the picture.

Unfortunately coydogs are not good for the environment as these guys when mixed with dogs give them an unfair advantage over the actual wild coyotes and can out compete them.  Coydogs also have dog genetics sometimes lose the fear of humans and can become a really problem animal which to my own knowledge quite the few of the ones I’ve seen turned out to be a pest animal. 

The few bits of information I’ve read about them is wild coydogs are dangerous and aggressive animals.  Even a tame one of any content is highly unpredictable.  I can tell you I’ve heard stories of people who had tame coyotes that one day turned on their owners so I can imagine a coydog is worse in that regards.

i dunno it just sits uncomfortably with me, like the animals died regardless, but they should be allowed to decay as nature intended…

we no longer need taxidermy as a way of learning about animals etc because we have so much technology available to use, and thousands and thousands of taxidermy pieces available from when the technology wasnt there.

your denying the animal a respectful death, like you wouldnt like it if you were hit by a car and someone picked you up, skinned you and made you into a model or whatever, so why do is it okay to do with roadkill?

Hey, we actually still really need taxidermy for learning purposes! The reason we collect so many specimens is because every single animal is different. And they change over time. It is so important to be able to document the changes in species over time and is essential to understanding more about them. It’s also how we discover new species, classify animals, etc. So much can be learned by working with dead animals. You say there’s technology to use, please tell me what technology is going to tell me the variation in raccoons in Idaho from 1996 to 2015? Tell me what technology will show me a new parasite that’s started going around in skunk in eastern Iowa?

And hey, what is and isn’t respectful is your own personal opinion! I personally strongly disagree that repurposing remains of something that’s gone is disrespectful. I myself would love my body to be used for something when I’m gone, for science or art. I won’t care cause I’ll be dead. Animals don’t care what happens after they die, most don’t even have a sense of mortality. Being “allowed to decay” is a very human idea, animals do not have these wishes after they die. But hey, it’s your opinion right? If it makes you uncomfortable, that’s fine. I’m aware you wrote feel free to disagree, but your usage of “you” and asking us why it’s okay makes this feel very personal. Please keep it out of the vulture culture tag where you’re purposefully making people feel bad about their hobby.

Animals don’t really have a concept of respect for the dead, with few exceptions. Deer don’t hold funerals, nor does anything else you’re likely to find out in the sticks. A dead raccoon has no family that will mourn him and he’s incapable of even conceiving the notion of his body being used as decor, let alone the capacity to feel insulted by it. Humans can’t even agree on what respect means when it comes to their own dead.

There are religious factions that say cremation is sacreligeous while it might be the only preferred method for someone else. There are even the famed sky burials where people are chopped up and fed to vultures because anything else is regarded as the body contamininating the earth or sky. Rarely, there are cultures who even prefer to eat their dead, or to exhume bodies to change their clothes. Respect for the dead is kind of a moot point because its subjective.

For the record, if I was hit by a car, I’d be drained of my fluids, pumped full of toxic chemicals, dressed up in cutesy church clothes and put on display before being buried in a box thats then covered in concrete so I can never rot naturally. I’m not a huge fan of that, I’d rather end up in a museum or even a freakshow after I die. I feel like it’d be more useful.

I actually view taking an animal into your home, cleaning it with care, and creating beauty from it to be the highest form of respect possible. You are taking a mortal being and creating a lasting piece of art from it, allowing that animal to live on through your work. You are showcasing the beauty of nature and encouraging people to look at the animal closer than they probably have been able to previously, which further encourages a curiosity and affinity for nature and preservation of living species. As a practicing Buddhist, I believe each animal I process is intricately connected to all of us, and I treat it with the utmost reverence when I handle it. (Hence the name “August Bones,” the definition of “august” being “something deserving of respect or awe.”)

He too slipped a bit on his back end but when he showed up frozen, he was very wet so that might have something to do with the few small slips on his back. I really hate when the pelts I tan slip…but really there’s not much that can be done about it.

It’s hard raising kids in the alpine tundra of the Tibetan plateau. It’s cold, windy, and staying alive is hard enough without a clutch of hungry chicks. Ground Tit (Pseudopodoces humilis) finds help from the family. When a pair of Ground Tits are raising chicks, a few male relatives will help to provide for the hatchlings. Normally, this type of behavior makes it so the young are more likely to survive, so the parents pass on their genes directly, and the helper males pass on some of theirs indirectly. In this case, the help doesn’t affect the chicks too much, but seems to improve the parents’ chances at surviving to breed again next year. Their kids might not survive, but at least they can try again later!
