What I Learned from Social Work ?
Social work is discussed in classrooms, social media, and public conversations. We talk about rights, equality, and change, but understanding real social conditions requires more than words. During my community internship with TRY NGO, I got the opportunity to work directly with children from a slum area. This experience helped me understand the true meaning of social work, empathy, and responsibility. It changed my perspective from only thinking about change to actually working towards it.
As part of my internship, I worked closely with children living in a slum area & my role included teaching them basic concepts, spreading awareness about their surroundings, introducing them to simple technology, and engaging them in learning activities through games. The aim was not only education but also confidence building and social awareness. Teaching children in such conditions required patience, understanding, and creativity.
Sometimes we used games to teach discipline and teamwork. Sometimes we discussed hygiene, safety, and the importance of learning. Technology exposure was also important because many of these children had never interacted with digital learning before.
Before this internship, my understanding of social work was mostly theoretical like many people, I believed that talking about rights and protesting for change was enough. But during this field experience, I realized that social problems cannot be understood fully unless we witness them closely.
Sometimes it takes openness to connect, but when we do, we understand that we are all children of God, equal in dignity, feeling, and hope.
Thank you !
