One overlooked thing that really sets the Lord of the Rings films apart from other franchises is how earnest they are-

Most movies are so afraid of being “cheesy” that whenever they say something like “friendship is the most powerful force in the world” they quickly undercut it with a joke to show We Don’t Really Believe That! ;)  Even Disney films nowadays have the characters mock their own movie’s tropes (”if you start singing, I’m gonna throw up!”) It’s like winking at the camera: “See, audience? We know this is ridiculous! We’re in on the joke!”

But Lord of the Rings is just 12.5 hours of friendship and love being the most powerful forces in the world, played straight. Characters have conversations about how much their home and family and friends mean to them, how hope is eternal, how there is so much in the world that’s worth living for…. and the film doesn’t apologize for that. There’s no winking at the audience about How Cheesy and Silly All This Is; it’s just. Completely in earnest.

And when Lord of the Rings does “lean on the fourth wall” to talk about storytelling within the film, it’s never to make jokes about How Ridiculous These Storytelling Tropes are (the way most films do)…. but instead to talk about how valuable these stories can be. Like Sam’s Speech at the end of the Two Towers: the greatest stories are ones that give you something to believe in, give you hope, that help you see there are things in a bleak violent world that are worth living for

I don’t post much here these days, but I had to share my latest fic! It’s Frodo/Sam, it’s an alternate ending of LOTR, and there are a lot of Hobbits in there  ;) I hope you’ll like it! A description of Sam in chapter 10 was inspired by the work of @yambits (in her amazing comic The Tower)  ;) PS: Jolly Cotton is my secret crush now.

I hope @chronicintrovert won’t blame me for saying that these cuties are Charlie and Nick. From my first reading of Heartstopper I couldn’t stop thinking “this is a Frodo/Sam modern AU”. And I love them so much, both Nick and Charlie and Sam and Frodo <3

old drawing but I just like the idea of Sam and Frodo braving Shelob’s cave together while holding hands and Frodo never casting Sam away because that’s how it happened in the book :^)

older lotr illustrations sometimes depict éowyn wearing ridiculously small armour. apart from the problem general sexualisation of the only female character (who really does anything), there’s another hilarious thought:

éowyn pretended to be dernhelm, a man. to fit in, she must have worn men’s armor. so the armor in the illustrations is normal for rohirrim.

therefore, all the rohirrim rode to war just like that:

Rébellion

Comme tous ceux de son peuple depuis que le grand empire de Fréane a conquis la péninsule d'Uria, Sao est un esclave.Son indiscipline l'a conduit à être vendu de maître en maître jusqu'à se retrouver au service du mystérieux Friedhelm Archenias.Si cette nouvelle situation lui permet de retrouver un peu de confort et de se rapprocher de Rébellion, une organisation secrète d'esclaves qui fomente une révolte, il n'en reste pas moins sur ses gardes. Il se méfie du caractère imprévisible de son maître, qui lui accorde de nombreux privilèges mais n'hésite pas à lui rappeler sa condition à la moindre occasion.Sao et les rebelles parviendront-ils à obtenir la liberté ?Et qui est cet étrange monsieur Archenias ?

Je publie toutes les semaines un nouveau chapitre de mon roman “Rébellion”. Il y est question d’esclavage, de colonisation, d’organisations secrètes... le tout dans un univers d’inspiration steampunk avec de belles et beaux messieurs et mesdames de toutes les couleurs. Ça vous tente ?

if i had to get in a fistfight with any member of the fellowship it would be Frodo because i would easily win

all i am saying is that he would ostensibly be the easiest one to take on in a fight given that he’s like three feet tall and has led a life of (physical) leisure compared to all of the others due to his standing as a gentlehobbit

legolas, aragorn, and gimli are all used to combat, sam works as a gardener, merry and pippin often gallivant off and get into mischief so they have the advantage of experience in whatever it is they’ve gotten up to/would possibly fight dirty, gandalf is gandalf so while weapons are out of the question i suppose that depends on if magic is involved. i don’t think i could take him without magic even if he IS old because he’s a very large guy, but maybe

it would be my knuckles against Frodo’s baby soft poet hands, plus i’ve got the additional height and fighting experience. i just think that he would be the easiest to win against in hand-to-hand combat out of the rest of them. also he isn’t real so he can’t offer a rebuttal to my claim

this has nothing to do with WANTING to fight Frodo, i just think he would be easiest for me to beat in a fight with no weapons. unless he utilized his very large feet, but i think he’s too polite to do that because it’s a fist fight and that would be considered playing dirty

I think if I had to fistfight a member of the fellowship, I would go for Pippin and try to tickle him to death. Pretty sure that could work.

Review: Since I’m the author, my opinion cannot be neutral ;) If you can read French and you’re looking for a slave/master story with a plot that goes beyond sexual tension and is more centred around politics. Also, steampunk atmosphere, if that’s your thing.

I couldn’t find you.’ ‘Well, you have now, Sam, dear Sam,’ said Frodo, and he lay back in Sam’s gentle arms, closing his eyes, like a child at rest when night-fears are driven away by some loved voice or hand. Sam felt that he could sit like that in endless happiness; but it was not allowed. It was not enough for him to find his master, he had still to try and save him. He kissed Frodo’s forehead.
