It’s almost as though it was gerrymandered and cut off from Virginia on the bases of slave ownership and African population.

If this were purely the aftermath of slavery there should be virtually nobody north of the Mason Dixon line the weird thing about it is that WV and to a lesser extent KY are little holdouts in what is otherwise a fairly straightforward visualization of postwar northern migration

In 1920 nearly all of the WV mining companies were laying off their workers and the African American population of WV was the first pick to be fired. Then immigrants from non western European countries. Many opted to go to northern factory cities to feed their families and it largely depopulated the area of the black population
