If you could rewrite 100yq, how would you change it for it to make more sense? Would you pick different characters to go on the quest or would you change the character motivations?
It would depend on how long I would want to make it.
If I were to keep the current crew on the 100 year quest step one would to be change character motivations. Natsu would be depressed about Zeref before his death and he would somehow find out about how his family was killed by dragons and that- combined with the fact that he also lost Igneel decently recently- would lead him onto this quest after he has a convo with Gildarts where he finds out more dragons - maybe even Ignia- are involved. I'd want him to return to pre 100 yrq levels of emotional maturity, still moderately goofy but he's stuck in a bit of grief that becomes more evident as they go on about the quest.
Obviously Lucy's main motivation would be Aquarius, but I'd also want her and Happy to be conflicted on what to do with Natsu because they can see he's not exactly his usual self, so when Natsu brings up the quest she jumps on it.
If this were a max 30 chapter story then I'd be tempted to just send those three. If it were closer to 50 I'd have Irene be a more central part of the quest- what do you MEAN you have THE og dragon slayer's spirit and she's not gonna be at the center of this quest?? Perhaps before the quest begins the usual gang are on a mission or something where Irene pops up and she gives some sort of vague hint that leads them to asking Gildarts about the 100 year quest. The quest would have a secondary goal of laying Irene's soul to rest- getting more milkyway type moments for Wendy- and just general Erza angst. There would neeeeed to be a scene at some point where Irene has reverted to a younger version of herself for some reason and she's so excited to see Erza because she doesn't remember what her husband did and Erza's just so conflicted and insert potential angst.
Gray and Juvia would've just started dating before this quest. Not one to be shown up by Natsu, Gray had to tag along and he's not about to leave his new girlfriend behind. Gruvia are at a bit of an awkward stage in their relationship and most of their plotline would just be cutesy fluff of them figuring out their relationship. I can't be asked to make up anything depressing for these two, everyone else will be going through it and I just want them to be happy okay.
My plotline for Jellal is the most thought out thing here and I've decided to make him the idiot in love that he is. The day before Erza decided to go on the quest, they meet up. Jellal has just been pardoned and his plan is to join the guild asap. Erza knowing about this pardon asks him about his future plans and this himbo trying to be romantic and surprise her tells her he's gonna finish things up with Crime Sorciere and figure things out from there. Erza for some reason would assume this to mean he's not joining Fairy Tail and due to some other miscommunication and the shock about the mother reveal goes off without telling him. Jellal shows up at the guild to join 3 days after she leaves, ready to surprise her, and decides to chase after her from some Ken-in-barbie-in-a-fashion-fairy-tale-type-shenanigans, dragging Erik along and maybe some others to add a fun B plot that makes them available for the final battle and Jerza get together during it.
If I were to make the series as long as it is now I'd completely change the premise of the quest. It would need to be something that leads them to discover things in Fiore that reveal an underlying issue with the continent and they'd have to work with all the guilds and the magic council to save the continent from some sort of threat- essentially a step up from Alvarez. It would end in them fundamentally changing the political system of the country to create a version of the magic council that isn't the magic council to bring back stability that hasn't been seen in the country since Jellal destroyed the first magic council. My problem with creating a "spinoff" as long as 100yrq is it's essentially just a continuation of the original series and needs to function as such otherwise it just feels redundant. As such, it would have to center around the consequences of Acnologia and Zeref's deaths. I'll flesh this idea out more if you want to hear more.
But yeah essentially it would depend on whether I'm making a short spinoff or a final saga, then draw character motivations from that.
