Well one would wonder why a capable and genius student like Fuutarou becomes dumb when it comes to figuring that the girl likes him. Being someone who has been in his place(not in academic front though, never been the first kid. good in academics though!). Besides its a typical trope of any harem anime. If its not like that, it'll no longer be harem and everything will be solved in a way. At the very least Fuutarou is genuine, he doesn't want to bother with romance in his academic life. What's wrong with that? Unlike Masamune and many other genuinely dumb protagonists.
