I thought it was implied Tempo’s parlor was chosen as a “Last Resort” in a way. I think it was “The Madam” who moved away?
It was implied that a properly trained Slave was a lot different from one that’s Broken. Sees being a slave as a good thing in a way, trained to thrive in this new life… it makes me really wonder the differences between a Well Trained and a Broken pet…
Lavender seems to be The Bar in a way for what a “Quality” Slave is like. She came from what’s implied as a top tier parlor. She is intelligent yet knows her station. Quiet yet every move holds meaning. Knows how to draw attention to herself…
The only reason they didn’t go to another wasn’t mentioned as far as I remember… just something about the Madam having moved away to her homeland along with her whole parlor.
It does make me wonder how many Parlors are in Ironfall… maybe Tempo’s was merely the only one close enough to the castle that Gaster felt safer? He seems rather paranoid about potential attacks even in his own castle…
Gaster seems fine with how open Papyrus’s Concubines are. Maybe even amused by it. Slaves seem to have a Purpose. Like living tools.
Tempo’s seem to be merely selling Decorative Toys. Perhaps a specialty of his?

I want to clarify that this is my opinion. I don't always adhere to specific details of the novel since I'm doing a "what if" exercise regarding the questions that were asked, "what if this event had been different, etc."
-If I remember correctly, Lavender's observation about Empress's parlor is consistent with her upbringing in a house of concubines for the aristocracy. She understands her position and can be critical about it. However, the Empress's parlor in this universe could very well be an exception and not the norm...
-Without freedom, every creature is already broken, no matter how well-off they are. That's the irony of the subtext.
-While not I rule out that Tempo's was used as a last resort. It's not mentioned if the king had another option in mind for Cross, given that he has more offspring. His disappointment could well be due to his preference for more refinement, if possible. I don't recall any other reason given as to why they would head to one of the 'worst' parlors; these are the most logical conclusions for me.
-Tempo works with a different 'product,' so to speak, for rough or cruel clients (which is supposedly abundant in Ironfalls). To top it off, Cross didn't choose his harem from what the place offered, but from those who had fallen from grace, condemned to endure much more cruelty and violence than the rest. (qwq)
-Fun Fact: Tempo does have a star 'product'; they're the definition of well-trained/broken in one. already been hinted at in previous chapters; I hope they can make their debut.
-Tempo's is quite far from Iron Falls, likely a desert. I don't recall if another parlor has been mentioned...
-The king has plenty of reasons to have a personal spy and bodyguard, lmao
-It could be said that the royal family has a soft spot for empowering their harem mates; however, it hasn't been shown that this is how the rest of the Iron Falls nobility acts -, they only need one individual to carry their offspring; anything else is just decoration (sounds cruel, I know, but it is what it is)

A large part of the conflict with Killer is his firm belief that he's the one who should suffer because of the deal. If one of the others was picked first, and the deal made with them... would that have a long term affect on how Killer develops?
Stars I love the image of the spymaster clocking Cross's disgusting with the party and how his new treasures are treated so he sneaks around go ensure they are protected for the night. Working in the shadows to ensure the royal family's will is seen through.
Another part of me wonders what would have happened if Cross firmly declared how disgusting the party is and asks his father something like, "is this truly the Coming Out celebration you wish for me to have? A disgusting affair where Slaves are broken so badly they cannot even function in the courts? I can count on my hands the only ones here worth keeping as Royal Concubines. This brute of a Merchant can't even keep his merchandise bathed properly much less prepared to serve properly."

I am of the opinion that the outcome wouldn't have changed that much; Killer would have tried to act as a shield for his group anyway. He wanted to keep the others safe, and that would have been his top priority, even if he hadn't been the one chosen.(It is possible that any other member of the group wouldn't have imposed the same restrictions regarding how others were treated, but they would have demanded guarantees and safety for everyone...)
For Killer, the idea that serving someone notorious for bloodlust inevitably meant suffering stemmed from his own paranoia and trauma (though, realistically, it was the most logical conclusion). His conflict also stems from chronic mistrust and disbelief, because Cross represents a dissonance in Killer's understanding of reality. Again, it doesn't matter who's the chosen, Killer would become a feral cat (╯ರ ~ ರ)╯︵ ┻━┻

I agree on this point: Cross hates Tempo. however One thing to keep in mind within this literary dark universe is that the bare minimum expected of a harem member is a lifeless personality-someone lacking free will or emotional intelligence. Although the nature of the other parlors isn't explicitly detailed , All the parlors share this trait; the issue with Tempo's is that things are taken to the extreme, and violence is marketed as part of the "appeal." If he was chosen, it was likely for practical reasons. I won't go into the details, but Cross is aware that he needs a partner who is, at the very least, resilient. Cross wasn't there for a soulmate; he must following custom...
The thing is Cross doesn't want a broken shell as a companion; deep down, he was determined to find someone standing, while forcing himself to remain in such a coven... qwq
And honestly, if he hadn't met Killer—and much to his own dismay—the king would've probably just picked someone at random for him, lmao.

If we move to the day of the event but apply the psychology and behavior of the character throughout the story, there are a few nuances:
Epic (spymaster) would be a supporting figure and probably a covert bodyguard...but for the king.
Epic could have stopped the cruelties committed against the rest of protagonists. He remains a big shot within the aristocracy, but he has no image to uphold and basically does whatever . He would find an excuse and keep them safe from the salon's clients... as long as that's the wish of the family he serves.
Epic would probably be aware of Cross's deal but wouldn't participate in it.🤔 It's in his later evolution that he allows himself to become more involved with the group...
Had Cross (heir) chosen another candidate instead of Killer; I believe the outcome would have been similar under the right circumstances. I think everyone at that point would have advocated for staying together and pushing for a pact; each maintained that spark of pride despite their dire situation. The exception, due to his broken mental state, was Dusty, and even then, I believe he would recognize the offered ticket to freedom...(人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
Many who once looked upon him with admiration and hope for love now only see the horrific beast that consumed his fellow fairies in cave-in madness. He dresses himself in white to appear less intimidating, but still, they keep their distance, for they see the gaping maw in his skull and the bulging red eyelight within his socket, and they know that his magic is unstable; a terrible side effect for consuming a season fairy’s stardust.
Other fairies see the beast, but Dust, Horror’s mate, sees only beauty beyond words. Perhaps that is one of his many strange curses for showering himself in a fairy’s stardust. It must have gotten into his eyelights, for when he looks upon Horror, he sees gentleness, loveliness, a white dress that makes all the colours of his body stand out. He sees not the dulled moth wings but instead flashes of shimmering colours beyond description. He stares at them often, and Horror may ask what makes them special, for he cannot see what Dust sees, and the petite fairy is, for just a moment, at a loss for words.
“They’re yours,” says Dust, and he reaches out to touch those wings none but him will fully appreciate. “And they’re beautiful, just like you.”

Thank you so, so much for portraying my beloved fairy Horror in such a wonderful display of colours, kanna. I love, love, love the creative direction you took with his wings! Seeing them like this gave me the idea of Dust’s vision being changed after the trauma he went through (and from the possibility of fairy stardust getting into his eyelights), and despite often being haunted by horrid hallucinations, he sees, when looking at Horror, only immense beauty.
