"Nope, you don’t really care anyway, do ya?"
❝That's not true, I do care... a little.❞
November 1st, 2023 // Diagon Alley
Partially to avoid an awkward silence, and partially as a result of her being nervous, Ava started rambling as they walked. Part of her thought that maybe if she just kept talking she could take her mind off her friends’ pain — for how could she not be feeling pain? Sure, a great aunt wasn’t a particularly close relative but still. Ava knew had she been in Aoife’s position all she would be thinking about was, ’why? how? who? w h y?” The death would be occupying every corner of her mind and she would welcome a distraction. When in doubt, ramble. That as Ava’s policy when it came to situations where she didn’t know what to do.
"You know , we had the strangest patient at Mungo’s yesterday. For Halloween he had literally transfigured himself into his costume — some sort of demented rabbit thing — and naturally he’d gotten quite drunk so do you know what he did? He tried to untransifure himself while he was piss dunk. He failed, rather hilariously I might add. The staff at Mungo’s had quite a challenge trying to get him back to normal, though his left foot will always be a tad too hairy.” Ava stopped talking and glanced at Aoife. "If I’m bothering you by rambling you can just tell me to be quiet; honestly it’s okay."
Naturally, Aoife couldn't quite shake the feeling that perhaps she wasn't safe. She wasn't the best witch, which was made obvious by the fact that she didn't have a career in mind coming out of Hogwarts, and she hardly passed her classes while she was a student. To make it even worse for herself, the only career she really had was a cashier at Honeydukes, and not many people counted that as a career. She knew that she didn't stand a chance. If her great aunt died at the hands of the Death Eaters, it was clear to her that so would she, if she didn't play her cards right.
Aoife was more than happy that Ava had started rambling. While she found comfort in silence when she was alone, she didn't quite like it when she was with others. She gasped as Ava told her story, never having seen something go down quite like it. ❝What?! Merlin's pants, that's insane. Who would try to do that? Of course it'd be a guy, but still! Who told him it was a good idea? Okay, well, it does sound like a good idea, y'know, if you don't get drunk and actually pull it off. I bet it was like a car crash, y'know? It's so bad but you can't just look away.❞

Aoife made it pretty clear she didn’t want to talk about the topic of her great aunt, so Ava didn’t push her to. This wasn’t really Ava’s area of expertise — comforting people. She couldn’t relate at all to what Aoife was going through. The only people she’d ever lost was two of her grandparents, and at the time she’d been too young to remember them. "I’m sorry for your loss, and I’m here if you need anything, okay?" Ava said in what she hoped was a comforting manner. Thankfully Aoife said she wanted a drink, as that gave Ava a direction to steer their conversation rather than having her awkwardly fumbling looking for something to say. "A drink sounds like a good idea. Do you want to go to the Leaky Couldren, then?"
Undoubtedly, the main thought that occupied Aoife's mind was how the Death Eaters were able to pull it off. Certainly, there wasn't just one killer. After all, they took down three great wizards in one night. But she wondered just how the plan was executed, and why they murdered them in one night, instead of counting the now deceased off for a dramatic effect.
❝Thanks, Ava,❞ Aoife nodded. But she certainly wouldn't take the other woman up for that offer. She hated talking about emotions, especially when she's the only one doing the talking. ❝The Leaky Cauldron sounds lovely.❞

"I always have."
❝You say that like I pay any attention. So, are you going to tell me what it is?❞

"Said my attitude problem was going to get in the way of my career choice, what the fuck is she talking about?"
❝...You have a career choice...?❞

Barbara rolled her lips into her mouth, staring at the front page of the newspaper with what felt like rocks weighing down her stomach. Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter and Kingsley Shacklebolt had been murdered in their beds while the rest of the Wizarding World slept peacefully. The knowledge of what had happened to them left her feeling almost nauseous, only made worse when she imagined what their families must be going through.
Letting out a shaky breath, she folded the newspaper and put it back behind the counter. Usually customers were quite fast in choosing what sweets they wanted to buy, but this particular one had been standing in the same place for several minutes now and she was starting to wonder if something was wrong. Moving out from behind the counter, she approached the customer with a smile that hopefully looked happier than she felt.
"Do you need any help?"
Despite having already been told she didn't have to go to work that day, Aoife still wanted to. She wanted to get out of the house for as long as possible. Her mother was leaving a trail of tears wherever she went, and her father had shut down. She would have to face her relatives soon enough, but for that day, she wanted nothing more than to avoid them. She didn't want to hear the sobbing, or angry profanity, and she certainly didn't want to see the look in their eyes that both scared and worried her.
So, she marched in the shop, walking through the aisles of candy. Perhaps she should purchase some and send them to her siblings as a condolence present. Before she could make her mind up, however, someone had approached her.
❝No, I work here, so...❞ she said, eyes rolling to the side. She was positive everyone had heard about her great aunt's death, and the last thing she really needed was a conversation about it. ❝Fair warning, I'll probably just hang out behind the counter. I'm not really up to it today, but I'm also not up to staying home. But I am looking to purchase something and get a few work related things done.❞

As soon as Ava tuned around and saw Aoife, her heart just broke. She wasn’t sure how close her friend had been to Minerva McGonagall, but if the way her hands her trembling was any indication then she’d felt the loss. Ava bit her lip. She wanted to hug Aoife, but she wasn’t sure how well the other woman would react.
"Are you okay?" she asked, before mentally kicking herself. What sort of a question was that? Aoife had just lost a family member, and even if they weren’t close Ava was sure Aoife wasn’t okay. "Sorry. That was a stupid question. Is there anything I can do to help? You were related to Minerva, right?"
Aoife had never been one for water works during death. Of all of the McGonagall relatives, she wasn't the closest to her great aunt. While Minerva taught the woman when she was at Hogwarts, and had invited her countless times for biscuits and tea, Aoife couldn't bring herself to do so. Questions about school would be asked, and as much as she wanted to, she couldn't lie about it. For her, it was better to avoid everything than to admit anything, which was why she was at Diagon Alley in the first place; to get away from the mourning family members and have some time for herself. ❝Yeah, no, it's okay,❞ she said quietly, shoving her shaky hands in her pockets. She cleared her throat to get rid of the lump that was forming before pressing her lips together. ❝I don't know. Honestly, I just want to get some tea or firewhiskey. Minerva is -- was my great aunt.❞

"You ruined it. You don’t want anyone to care."
The comment caused Aoife’s heart to sink to her stomach, an unsettling feeling she’d had since she joined the Death Eaters and kept it a secret from her family. While fear dominated her actions, guilt had been swallowing her whole. She’d abandoned her family, the people she should love and follow, but instead she decided on a different path, and for potentially empty promises and the feeling that maybe she wasn’t useless after all.
It stung to hear those words, especially from her sister; her younger sister whom she was supposed to protect and set an example for. The person she was supposed to help out, and if it came down to it, save — not be on the enemy line killing her allies.
❝Maybe you shouldn’t have cared in the first place.❞

When Ava stopped outside the store to pick up the Daily Prophet that morning, the news it contained was enough to make her blood run cold. Harry Potter; the saviour, the one they all thought was indestructible — dead. Kingsley Shacklebolt, their leader — dead. Minerva McGongall, Ava’s favourite teacher and a role model to so many — dead. Ava couldn’t read past the headline; all she saw was DEATH EATERS in screaming capitals. As a halfblood, she wasn’t as much of a target as Muggleborns, but that didn’t make her any less afraid.
"Please tell me this is a joke."
Aoife needed a break. She slipped away from her family's home, and headed straight for Diagon Alley, figuring she needed a pick-me-up at the Leaky Cauldron after finding out about what happened just hours ago. Her hands were still cold, fingers trembling and the only thing that could stop the involuntary movement was a farm grasp on the end of her coat.
❝I-- yeah, it's true. Shocker isn't it? The three great leaders, dead in just one night?❞
