"Congratulations are always better  when youâre having a drink together.â
Barbara raised an eyebrow at him, offering him her usual warm smile. "If that's the case, I suppose we'll have to place an order, then. Wouldn't want to make this congratulations any less enjoyable than it can be."
March 23rd || Florish and Blotts
"Do you need help finding anything?"
"Yes, please. Do you have any suggestions for books that a seven-year-old could like?"

"You should have seen it. One of the  best passes Iâve made all season.â
"I suppose a congratulations is in order, then."
February 8th || Hogsmeade
"Perhaps you could start watching  where youâre going in the street.â
Barbara was balancing so many boxes in her arms that she could barely see the street in front of her. She had told herself that she could make it back home without a problem, but with the bustling streets the task was made a lot harder than it otherwise would have been.
"Shite. I'm so sorry, you're right. Are you okay?" she asked, already bending down to collect her things.
November 1st, 2023 // Diagon Alley
When Ava stopped outside the store to pick up the Daily Prophet that morning, the news it contained was enough to make her blood run cold. Harry Potter; the saviour, the one they all thought was indestructible â dead. Kingsley Shacklebolt, their leader â dead. Minerva McGongall, Avaâs favourite teacher and a role model to so many â dead. Ava couldnât read past the headline; all she saw was DEATH EATERS in screaming capitals. As a halfblood, she wasnât as much of a target as Muggleborns, but that didnât make her any less afraid.
"Please tell me this is a joke."
Once the shock of the news had started to wear off, Barbara was left with one major question clouding her mind: why? You didn't go after three of the of the most skilled and protected wizards in Britain just for the hell of it, so she was sure that whoever was behind it was planning something big. The worry of what was to come rested heavily on her mind. The newspapers were speaking of Death Eaters, and though a part of her agreed, she had a hard time accepting that as the truth.Â
"Trust me, I wish I could. I... it's so hard to wrap your head around it."
november 1st, 2023 || honeydukes
Barbara rolled her lips into her mouth, staring at the front page of the newspaper with what felt like rocks weighing down her stomach. Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter and Kingsley Shacklebolt had been murdered in their beds while the rest of the Wizarding World slept peacefully. The knowledge of what had happened to them left her feeling almost nauseous, only made worse when she imagined what their families must be going through.
Letting out a shaky breath, she folded the newspaper and put it back behind the counter. Usually customers were quite fast in choosing what sweets they wanted to buy, but this particular one had been standing in the same place for several minutes now and she was starting to wonder if something was wrong. Moving out from behind the counter, she approached the customer with a smile that hopefully looked happier than she felt.
"Do you need any help?"
july 12th, 2023, the leaky cauldron
"Shit, shit, shit.." Alice stared at the soup on her tennis shoes and jeans, and at the shattered bowl on the floor. "I am so sorry, Iâll.. Iâll clean that up right away.."
"Merlin, are you okay? That soup must have been hot," Barbara said, staring at the girl with concern. "It's fine, though; I'll help you clean up. You just take care of yourself."

The kiss only lasted for a few moments, but it managed to catch her completely off guard. Leaning back slightly on the couch, she gazed at James with a quizzical expression on her face. Barbara was used to physical displays of affection, often initiating them herself in her various relationships, but kisses hadnât been present in their friendship before and she wasnât sure what the change meant.Â
"Uh," she started, before shaking her head at herself. She was prone to over thinking things and turning them into something they werenât, but she would not make that mistake now. Friends could kiss, and she wouldnât put James in an awkward position when his intentions were likely perfectly harmless.âOkay, then. Do you want some ice cream? Iâm feeling chocolate,â she offered, getting up from the couch with her usual warm smile evident on her face.

The question caught her off guard and for a moment all she did was stare quietly ahead. âHe⊠moved. He had to move to America with his family. Heâs long gone by now. Itâs alright though; Iâm doing perfectly fine raising Adrian on my own, thank you.â It wasnât a lie, exactly; he had moved to America. It just wasnât the whole truth.

"And people drink this?â She almost spat it back into the cup, but she managed to force it down with some determination ( and the thought of her fatherâs expression if he had been there to witness it ). The distaste was evident on her face as she put the cup back on the counter, pushing it away from herself with a grimace. "Merlin. Why would you do that to yourself? This must be worse than torture. And people drink this in the morning? I donât understand people, Jude, I really truly donât.â
"Also, why pick coffee when you could have a hot chocolate?â Just the thought of a cup cheered her up, and she rested her elbows on the counter with a warm smile. "I havenât made you my signature hot chocolate, have I? Weâve got to change that. Hot chocolate and some ice cream   thought not at the same time, obviously. Mum said that if you eat something too hot and too cold at the same time your teeth can crack, and weâve got far too beautiful smiles to ruin them now.â

"What makes you say that?" She stared at him quietly, but if she expected a response she didnât get one. A small part of her hoped that if she studied him carefully enough the answer would reveal itself as if by magic, but his expression didnât betray any of his thoughts and she was left unsure of what to do next. She rolled her bottom lip into her mouth, hoping that her eyes didnât clearly display all that she felt; pity was surely the last thing he needed then. But he was so young. Far too young for all that heâd been through. Far too young to have to carry it all on his own.Â
"Maybe youâre right. Maybe not all promises are. But some are worth it, some are important. Some promises can make a difference.â She paused for a moment, continuing in a quieter voice. âSo⊠please. Promise me you wonât go through it alone   whatever it is thatâs weighing you down. You donât have to deal with everything on your own. Itâs okay to lean on someone. Your siblings or cousins or⊠anyone. And I know itâs not my place to say any of this, but I felt like it was important to get out.â
