I need somewhere to voice my opinion.
Okay. So we all know that the American election just happened and our new president is President Donald Trump. As someone who lived abroad her entire life, I never thought an election would affect me so much. Here’s a little bit of information you should know about me: I’m an American citizen born in Taiwan. I have never lived in the states and never really thought that I was a true “American”. Even though i was born in Taiwan, I moved to China when I was 6. Ever since, I’ve received an education in a very prestigious school in China where all the most privileged and affluent children come together. People from many different countries and cultures come to this school and I learned a lot from them.
I never really did pay attention to the election until election day came closer and closer. Everything I knew about the candidates came from clip videos that other people would post on facebook or youtube. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to to vote. I mean if all the information that I’m getting is going to be 3 minute long videos, I don’t feel like I’m going to make the proper decision that can affect America as a country. But when I look at these videos of Trump speaking about women, people of religion, the LGBTQ community, and people of race, I don’t think about Trump as a person running for president and how will he qualify to be president, but I think instead what type of value does this person have. “Mexicans are rapists and terrorists.” “They only send the bad people over.” “Grab ‘em by the pussy.” “Nasty woman.” Are these statements that anybody should say in general? If anybody were to say this to me or to anybody that I know, I know I would be truly offended and appalled by these statements.
As a woman, I want to make it clear that that I am not worth less than any other man on the street. I should be treated with equality and be judged by what I can offer the same way a man would be. I am not asking for special treatment. I am not asking for you to give me more cash than a man can ear. I am not asking for a better education than a man can get. I only ask for the chance to be equal with any other man on the street.
As a person of different race, I want to make it clear that we have a voice too. We are not to be judged how we look and how we think. Yes, we are not white but so what? We come from a different history, different places, and different cultures. But what makes your race more superior than mine? Our culture is something that should be celebrated just like how you celebrate your culture. Culture is not something to be made fun of but to genuinely enjoy with others. That is the beauty of culture. We live on a planet with so many diverse people with so many different voices and opinion and those should be respected. One voice doesn’t matter more than the other.
As a person who grew up with a religious background, I believe that anybody has the right to what ever they want to believe in. Although I don’t think of myself as religious, I grew up learning about Christianity and I know for sure that God did not make one group of people better than another. We all stand on equal grounds. I believe that other religions feel the same way to. Religion is something to be respected. This is something that a person has poured their soul into believing. Why would you look down on someone who is giving their all of something that they think is important in their life?
I really do hope that President Donald Trump realizes that he will have to make sure that all these people have the rights to their own voice and ensures the safety of all American citizens and not just the ones that he thinks that he should protect. We all deserve that right to feel safe in a place that we call home.
In conclusion, I want to tell all the minorities and people who feel like their voice is not heard. Do not be afraid! No matter what happens, there will be people willing to fight for you! Stand tall and walk with pride. You are loved and cared for. And no matter what is coming up later remember that we will be walking along with you!
So for all of you that read that took the time to read this, thank you for reading to this point.
