As James Baldwin wrote, "[History] does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do." We cannot afford to ignore our history nor can we afford to avoid telling our children what history truly took place. It was not "migrant work" and it's not simply "serving time" today. It is all connected and must all be addressed. White folks, if this makes you feel defensive or angry, please put your fists down and breathe... recognize that our nation's history is built upon designer fear. Let's recognize what we've been taught to think and feel so that we can let go of it. Try to stop holding on to the fear that is being used to oppress so many of our brothers and sisters.
