Ali, an extremely talented Afghan director, travelled to Afghanistan and interviewed a bunch of people. What ensued is this series, called Sadae Afghanistan (lit: “the voice of Afghanistan”), in which Afghans share their own unique and personal accounts of war, friendship, hospitality, giving, losing, and, most importantly, hope. We all know the history and dehumanized pictures of their suffering, but who actually listens to the voice of Afghans in Afghanistan?

The new kid in school needs a new name! Or does she? Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name? Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious that American kids will like her. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week. Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning. On the day of her name choosing, the name jar has mysteriously disappeared. Encouraged by her new friends, Unhei chooses her own Korean name and helps everyone pronounce it —Yoon-Hey.

The highly anticipated fifth annual Kollaboration DC Talent Competition and Showcase is taking place on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Spectrum Theater in Rosslyn, VA. Kollaboration DC presents some of the most talented emerging Asian/Pacific Islander American performing artists native to the Greater Washington DC/Metropolitan area. Kollaboration endeavors to unite and strengthen the APA community by empowering APA artists to pursue their creative dreams while inspiring newer generations of talent. Now in our fifth year, this year's show promises to be another exciting and memorable experience! Come celebrate contemporary Asian American literature at the Library of Congress. Poet Tarfia Faizullah, whom U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey calls “a poet of brave and unflinching vision,” presents her debut collection of poems, Seam.

[M]any nations of the third world are described as ‘underdeveloped’. These less wealthy nations are generally those that suffered under colonialism and neo-colonialism. The ‘developed’ nations are those that exploited their resources and wealth. Therefore, rather than referring to these countries as ‘underdeveloped’, a more appropriate and meaningful designation might be ‘over exploited’. Again, transpose this term next time you read about the ‘underdeveloped nations’ and note the different meaning that results.

Oh hay look women of colour were an integral part of the ‘cool’ part of history too, how about that.  They were like. Doing stuff that supposedly only heroic white dudes had done. Prior to the late 1960s, immigrants from Asia were usually defined as Oriental or Asiatic.

The term Asian American was coined by historian Yuji Ichioka, who is credited with popularizing the term, to frame a new “inter-ethnic-pan-Asian American self-defining political group” in the late 1960s.

As Asian Americans originate from many different countries, each population has its own unique history.

The demographics of Asian Americans can further be subdivided into:

South Asian Americans, including Bangladeshi Americans, Bhutanese Americans, Indian Americans, Nepali Americans, Pakistani Americans, and Sri Lankan Americans

East Asian Americans, including Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Korean Americans, Mongolian Americans, Tibetan Americans and Taiwanese Americans.

Southeast Asian Americans, including Burmese Americans, Cambodian Americans, Filipino Americans, Hmong Americans, Indonesian Americans, Laotian Americans, Malaysian Americans, Mien Americans, Singaporean Americans, Thai Americans, and Vietnamese Americans.
