Munchausen syndrome

Munchausen syndrome is a factitious disorder, a mental disorder in which a person repeatedly and deliberately acts as if he or she has a physical or mental illness when he or she is not really sick. Munchausen syndrome is considered a mental illness because it is associated with severe emotional difficulties. Munchausen syndrome, named for Baron von Munchausen, an 18th century German officer whowas known for embellishing the stories of his life and experiences, is the most severe type of factitious disorder. Most of the symptoms in people with Munchausen syndrome are related to physical illness -- symptoms such as chest pain, stomach problems, or fever -- rather than those of a mental disorder. NOTE: Although Munchausen syndrome usually refers to a factitious disorder with mostly physical symptoms, the term is sometimes used to refer to factitious disorders in general. In this article, Munchausen syndrome refers to the type of factitious disorder with mostly physical symptoms.

Nightmare disorder also called as Parasomnia is a type of sleep disorder that involves undesirable experiences that occur while falling asleep, during sleep or when waking up. Nightmares usually occur during the stage of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM). A nightmare may involve these features: Your dream seems vivid and real, often becoming more disturbing as the dream unfolds Your dream storyline is usually related to threats to your safety or survival Your dream wakes you You feel scared, anxious, angry, sad or disgusted as a result of your dream You feel sweaty or have a pounding heartbeat, but do not leave the bed You can think clearly upon awakening and can recall details of your dream Your dream occurs near the end of your sleep time Your dream keeps you from falling back to sleep easily Source: www.mayoclinic.org

Insomnia

is sleeping disorder and rarely an isolated medical or mental illness but rather a symptom of another illness. It is when someone is having a hard time to sleep or can’t sleep at all. Insomnia can be short-term (acute insomnia) or can last a long time (chronic insomnia). The causes of having insomnia could be physical discomfort, environmental factors, interferences in normal sleep schedule, pain, anxiety, chronic stress or could be symptom of another mental illness. This could lead into being more depressed and may cause other health issues.

This artwork is inspired by a high school girl who had suffered insomnia for a year which caused her depression and drowned her into deep misery. She composed a poem that was shown above when she was 14 while suffering this kind of illness.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. There are four basic types of bipolar disorder; all of them involve clear changes in mood, energy, and activity levels. These moods range from periods of extremely “up,” elated, and energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to very sad, “down,” or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes). Less severe manic periods are known as hypomanic episodes. • Bipolar I Disorder— defined by manic episodes that last at least 7 days, or by manic symptoms that are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Usually, depressive episodes occur as well, typically lasting at least 2 weeks. Episodes of depression with mixed features (having depression and manic symptoms at the same time) are also possible. • Bipolar II Disorder— defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not the full-blown manic episodes described above. • Cyclothymic Disorder (also called cyclothymia)— defined by numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms as well numerous periods of depressive symptoms lasting for at least 2 years (1 year in children and adolescents). However, the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic episode and a depressive episode. • Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders— defined by bipolar disorder symptoms that do not match the three categories listed above. Delusional Disorder

Delusional disorder, previously called paranoid disorder, is a type of serious mental illness called a "psychosis" in which a person cannot tell what is real from what is imagined. The main feature of this disorder is the presence of delusions, unshakable beliefs in something untrue or not based on reality. People with delusional disorder generally experience non-bizarre delusions, which involve situations that could occur in real life, such as being followed, poisoned, deceived, conspired against, or loved from a distance. These delusions usually involve the misinterpretation of perceptions or experiences. In reality, however, the situations are either not true at all or highly exaggerated. If the delusions could not happen in reality (aliens, television broadcasting your thoughts) then a person might be considered delusional with bizarre-type delusions.

Depression 

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

Fact #10: Human rights violations of people with mental and psychosocial disability are routinely reported in most countries

         These include physical restraint, seclusion and denial of basic needs and privacy. Few countries have a legal framework that adequately protects the rights of people with mental disorders.

Fact #9: Stigma and discrimination against patients and families prevent people from seeking mental health care

      Misunderstanding and stigma surrounding mental ill health are widespread. Despite the existence of effective treatments for mental disorders, there is a belief that they are untreatable or that people with mental disorders are difficult, not intelligent, or incapable of making decisions. This stigma can lead to abuse, rejection and isolation and exclude people from health care or support. Within the health system, people are too often treated in institutions which resemble human warehouses rather than places of healing.

Fact #7: About 800 000 people commit suicide every year

           Over 800 000 people die due to suicide every year and suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. There are indications that for each adult who died of suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide. 75% of suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries. Mental disorders and harmful use of alcohol contribute to many suicides around the world. Early identification and effective management are key to ensuring that people receive the care they need.

Fact #5: The causes of mental illness are complex

      There isn’t one simple, obvious thing, like a virus or bacteria, that causes mental illness, and that makes the causes hard to work out.

      For some mental illnesses, like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, it’s possible to inherit a predisposition — a greater likelihood that you’ll develop the disorder. For others there seems to be no genetic link at all.

      But even then it doesn’t mean you’ll get sick. Your likelihood of developing a mental illness is influenced by a complex combination of genetic, neurological, developmental, environmental, socio-economic, cultural, life experience and other factors.

Fact #4: At least 20% of adults are affected by mental illness every year

           Anxiety disorders are the most common, followed by depression. A significant number of Australians are also affected by personality disorders, eating disorders, psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia, and more. Some people have more than one diagnosis, and far too many Australians go undiagnosed.

Fact #1: Mental illness is real

       Our knowledge of mental illness is incomplete, but we can say one thing for certain: mental illness isn’t laziness, attention-seeking, bad diet, mental, physical or spiritual weakness or a failure of character. Mental illness is illness, as real as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
