APA 7th Edition: Using Periods
A brief video explaining the proper use of periods in APA format
APA 7th Edition: Double Spacing in Word 365
Microsoft Word 365 defaults to single spacing with additional padding added after each new paragraph. The APA 7th Edition Publication Manual explicitly states: "Do not add extra spacing between paragraphs" (pg. 45). This video will ensure you are in compliance with the new APA formatting requirements in Word 365.
APA 7th Edition: Online Video with an Author Reference
This short video covers how to cite and reference an online video with an author. The author, according to the APA Manual, is whoever uploaded the video (pg. 344).
Book Reference with Two Authors
This video demonstrates a simple book reference with two authors. These elements will remain the same for all book references and lay the groundwork for more difficult references. For example, a book reference with a DOI would simply use the same structure here with the addition of the DOI at the very end of the reference after the publisher.
APA 7th Edition: Journal Entry from a Website
Journal entries require elements that aren't included in book references such as the issue and volume numbers. This video demonstrates how to build a journal reference with one author from a website. Keep in mind that a lot of websites have material that are previously published and should only be used when the website is the original source. If a webpage has an article previously published, say, in a magazine, the magazine should be referenced, not the journal.

A Plan for Your Education, A Plan for Your Life
The P.O.W.E.R strategy is discussed in detail in P.O.W.E.R. Learning and Your Life: Essentials of Student Success – a book that many of the largest universities in the United States use for incoming freshman. Having read the book a few times, I highly recommend it. In the book, Feldman uses the term “POWER” as an acronym for Prepare, Organize, Work,…

Spacing After a Period
Spacing After a Period
Spacing After A Period Periods, Commas, and Semicolons
I’ve received a lot of questions about the spacing after a period in APA format. One of the reasons students have been confused is due to a typo in the original 6th edition of the APA Manual. Originally, the Manual did not make it clear whether there should be one or two spaces after a period ending a sentence. Now that the Manual has been…

Pages for Mac
Known as Pages or Pages 5, the newest version of Pages for Mac has received less than stellar reviews on the app store. Because of that, I am not in a hurry to add this version to my book. However, every new Mac being shipped comes with Pages 5, so it would be unfair to ignore it entirely. In terms of APA formatting, Pages 5 is actually easier to use than Pages 09. Once the…

Building an Effective Outline
Building an Effective Outline
What is an Outline?
An outline can be anything that organizes the main points of your writing. They can look like neatly organized templates, scribbles on a sheet of notebook paper, mind maps, or notecards on a coffee table. Chances are, if you’re organizing your thoughts before you write, you’ve experience the process of outlining.
The Classic Outline Format
I love the classic outline. I used…

Outline Software
I find a lot of reasons to stay busy so that I don’t have to be productive! But, if you want to keep yourself busy as a form of procrastination, testing out productivity software is a good way to do it! Below is a growing list of outline and organization software (both paid and free versions) that I’ve tried. I will continue to revise this list as I test other software.

Transition Words and Phrases: Linking Thoughts Together
When we write, we are constantly linking thoughts together like a chain. We are taking the reader from one thought or argument to the next as we lead them through our paper. Without transition sentences, our thoughts appear abrupt or scattered, leaving the reader to wonder why we have switched subjects without letting them know!
What makes…
