Paris Syndrome

Paris syndrome - (French: Syndrome de Paris, Japanese: パリ症候群, Pari shōkōgun) is a transient psychological disorder exhibited by some individuals when visiting or vacationing to Paris, as a result of extreme shock resulting from their finding out that Paris is not what they had expected it to be.

My blog project, entitled Paris Syndrome, was born of my time living in Paris. For me, Paris has always been a place of wonder and romance, a city that I have idolized for a period of nearly ten years. This love and fanaticism was due to an obsession with Paris throughout the early 20th Century, the writers, poets, artists and performers who lived in the city at this time and helped develop the reputation of the City of Lights and the City of Love. The name Paris Syndrome comes from the term given to the illness that certain tourists appear to have when visiting Paris and then the realisation that it doesn’t live up to the image of a romantic and beautiful Paris that they have in their minds.

This obsession with Paris throughout the early 20th Century is what first inspired me to study French, and move to France and subsequently to Paris. After several months in Paris, it grew on me that the city is not what people see in the tourism brochures - yes it has its history, its architecture and its bohemian chic, but on the underside of the glossy tourism brochures is its problems with race, with crime, with unending homelessness, with ever mounting piles of rubbish in the gutters or the smell of urine in the streets. This was the reason for my blog. I wanted to show this side of Paris and compare it to the Paris we all imagine in our minds and the Paris we have all come to love through hollywood films, tourism brochures and travel blogs. I have done this through photography of a rather high quality (whenever possible), and by presenting the images entirely in black and white, as the images from early 20th Century Paris are so often presented.

This is not at all an attempt to degrade the romance of one of the greatest cities on earth, but only to highlight the inequality and harshness of Paris in the 21st Century. A city of 4 million inhabitants, yet where loneliness can be just around the corner.
