rocky always yells “enrichment for grace! enrichment for grace!” when he has a new invention to make the humans time more interesting on erid. grace, while appreciative, replies ‘I know I’m in a zoo enclosure but could we maybe not call it that? I feel like a bear getting thrown a pumpkin covered in peanut butter.’ rocky simply gives him a thumb, not wanting to explain that a significant amount of the population sees grace as the celebrity savior scientist who rocky keeps as a controversially young trophy wife and publicly lavishes in gifts

“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”

The fact that one of the main musical themes in Project Hail Mary is a Dies Irae but in a major tonality means SO MUCH to me, you guys have no idea. This motif that, for centuries, has been associated with death and despair, recontextualized in a warm, hopeful, positive light. I'm gonna cry and throw up if I think about it too hard. It says, "I know things have been dark and hopeless, but it's gonna be okay. Better than okay, it's gonna be beautiful, I promise." ❤️

Alllllll of that. It’s a hell of a shot. It means so much because he’s been so damn brave since he found Rocky. Grace is in a completely insane situation with terrifyingly long odds and he’s just kept on trying, over and over, to be curious and kind and attentive and hopeful—because he’s here with this other little guy who is ALSO fighting insane odds all alone! and he needs to try! for him!

So he’s kept up his courage. He’s been resolved and resigned. Says he’s made his peace. And then Rocky, who’s already been giving it his all and being as strong as a little space spider can be—this little dude who has been drifting alone with his friends’ corpses, trying to solve an impossible problem, for years—this wonderful little guy who misses his mate and has saved his planet and could just go home—he offers to keep floating alone through space for years and years more if it will save Grace from ending his life alone.

And now Grace doesn’t have to be brave about it, because somebody sees. Someone understands what it’s been like for him. Somebody loves him and wants him safe. So he cries.
