Caleb and Essek is not the first topic I thought I'd be thinking about after the finale - I loved the dynamic and the relationship but I was never tied to the ship like I was with Beau's relationships.

But I actually really like the ending for them - I know a lot of people were probably hoping for more. But really their epilogues don't tie them solidly to long term specifics - not for any of them. It covers the next few months and some vague intent for sure.

Neither Caleb or Essek are in a place at the finale, or even 6 months after, for a romantic relationship - and they've both been through a lot that they may never be. But they both know for sure that they want each other as a constant in their lives so that's what gets acknowledged.

I also think it was wise of Liam to acknowledge their different lifespans - the dnd world is rough for this. Obviously they could have decades together. But Essek will see Caleb grow old and die, while he is essentially unchanged.

I had this weird conversation with a friend a couple weeks back, where we talked about if you knew, with absolute certainty, that you only had say 5 years left would you start a new relationship. Would you love and be loved deeply to only leave them heartbroken? Life can be cut short at any time of course, so that's not to say to never enter into any relationship. And that does a disservice to the depth of the relationships you can form with others that aren't romantic.

But I digress, all this is to say that I feel really content with their ending. Does the hopeless romantic in me want everyone to just live a happy ever after with romance and joy - absolutely. But Liam has always excelled in exploring difficult topics with his characters and sticking true to them. So while it looks different, I think this is the best happy ever after for him right now.
