Converting to Islam: British women on prayer, peace and prejudice.
Around 5,000 British people convert to Islam every year – and most of them are women. Six of them talk about prejudice, peace and praying in car parks.
Dr Annie (Amina) Coxon, consultant physician and neurologist, 72, London
"I'm English back to the Normans. I was brought up in the US and Egypt, before coming to boarding school in the UK at six, then doing medical training in London and the US. I've been married twice, have three stepchildren and five stepgrandchildren.
I converted 21 years ago. It was the result of a long search for a more spiritual alternative to Catholicism. Initially, I didn't consider Islam because of the negative image in the media. The conversion process was gradual and ultimately guided by the example of the mother of the current Sultan of Oman – one of my patients – and by a series of dreams.
My family were initially surprised, but accepted my conversion. After 9/11, however, my relationship with my sister-in-law changed and I am no longer welcome in their home. I have friends for whom my conversion is an accepted eccentricity, but I lost many superficial ones because of it..."

THE GREAT MOSQUE OF XI’AN
It is the oldest and one of the most renowned mosques in the country, founded in 742. However, the majority of the existing Xi’an Great Mosque was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and further expanded in the Qing Dynasty.
It was built and renovated in later periods (especially during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty). It remains a popular tourist site of Xi'an, and is still used by Chinese Muslims (mainly the Hui people) today as a place of worship. Unlike most mosques in Middle Eastern or Arab countries, the Great Mosque of Xi'an is completely Chinese in its construction and architectural style, except for some Arabic lettering and decorations, for the mosque has neither domes nor traditional-style minarets.

Faith Change: Islam rapidly grows as Christianity declines in UK
LADY EVELYN COBBOLD
Travelling from Mayfair to Makkah in 1933 at the age of 65, Lady Evelyn Cobbold, an elegant Scottish aristocrat, was the first British born Muslim woman to make the Hajj. Once describing herself “unconsciously a little Moslem at heart” to the Pope, her book Pilgrimage to Mecca (1934) is a fascinating account of her Hajj journey.
“The Ka’ba rising in simple majesty...[requires] a master pen to describe the scene, poignant in its intensity of the great concourse of humanity of which I was one small unit, completely lost to their surroundings in fervour of religious enthusiasm…. I felt caught up in a strong wave of spiritual exaltation….”
