FTM, MTF, NB, and Cis Mulan

I'm going to be discussing the fandom's views of Mulan's gender

Keep in mind, I love all of these headcanons for Mulan! I'm still half decided between FTM and NB Mulan. I'm just going to be talking about why people in the fandom see Mulan as different genders. I will also be talking about how Reflection can be interpreted any way.

Why People See Mulan as Cis

Many people in the fandom think of Mulan as more of a feminism movie. A movie showing girls can be as strong as a man. Showing that a woman can have a smart brain, without needing to be a man. I like this.

They interpret Reflection as a song about wanting to be the perfect woman, but struggling because she doesn't fit into the sexist views by society. Lyrics like, "I will never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter." symbolize how she doesn't feel like she can fit in with how society wants a perfect bride and daughter to act like.

Why People See Mulan as FTM

As a trans man, I love this, and I can relate a lot. Many people believe the story is about Mulan/Ping figuring out that instead of a woman, he identifies as a male. They think the movie shows that you aren't restricted by your birth gender. If you identify as a man, you can be a man.

They interpret Reflection as a song about not feeling right with the birth gender. Lyrics like, "Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know?" are things trans men experience. Looking in the mirror and not recognizing the feminine body while your mind is one of a male.

Why People See Mulan as MTF

This next one makes a little less sense with the story, but it's still an amazing HC. Lots of people think of Mulan as an MTF girl. The movie is showing how she has to resort back to her birth gender in order to save her family and home. The movie is all about pretending to be a man, which is what trans women have to do if they're closeted.

They interpret Reflection as a song about not being able to pass as a woman. Lyrics such as, I will never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter. Can it be, I'm not meant to play this part?" resemble how some trans women feel like if they can't act like a girl, they aren't one (which is completely untrue). Some trans women believe that if they can't act like what society thinks a girl acts like, then they're just faking. Lots of Trans Women experience this.

Why People See Mulan as NB

A lot of people see Mulan as non-binary because of how they present their gender. People see Mulan as a mix between female and male, a basic definition of NB. The movie is about being able to present however you wish. Gender doesn't matter as long as you're able to use your mind.

They interpret Reflection as a song about not conforming with how society views gender. Most people find the fact that the lyrics can show both trans male and trans female can be like non-binary. This gender HC isn't as popular as the other HC's, but it's still valid.

Conclusion:

Don't force your HC onto other people. All these gender HC's are perfectly valid. You think of Mulan as a cis woman? That's just great. You're trans and you identify with Mulan on a personal level, so you HC them as trans? That's amazing.
