Because contrary to what Drift thinks, Rodimus cares about him. Can't that be reason enough? The Rodian is someone very dear to his spark and always will be.
it's not so much a thought as it is a feeling. a notion. an inkling, even. so much time has passed, & yet neither of them has managed to reach out to the other ... for good or for bad. perhaps that's why doubt festers in a spark that had once been so eager to please — after all, why would anyone want to when he's a basket case all the time?
The only one that can decide who is worth the Prime’s time and effort is himself. If he deems someone worth it, that’s all there is to it. Is it not good enough?
he wouldn't dare to say that any decision the prime can make would be lacking. it certainly wouldn't make him a good spectralist to be such a doubter — although he may be confused as to why rodimus has seen worthiness in someone like him.
Even back when he was Hot Rod, he never did anything out of pity or obligation. It’s never been in his coding to do things he didn’t want to. If Rodimus didn’t want to be around someone, he wouldn’t be. It’s as simple as that. He wouldn’t have fought so hard to stay by Drift’s side.
there are plenty of other mechs worth more time & effort. rodimus doesn't need to dedicate so much to a mech that doesn't deserve it, much less doesn't know how to ask for it.

His proud spoilers lower at that. Sure, Rodimus has made mistakes, but he’s never lied to Drift, especially about his support of the swordsmech.
mechs change. their interests wax & wane, their sparks move on with enough time & absence. rodimus shouldn't have to force himself to be around someone if his spark isn't in it, let alone talk to him like he's still a friend. how can he be sure it isn't out of pity or obligation?
he glares at himself in the floor-length mirror for a long moment, taking in the pitiful state of his frame. his right optic is shattered, his finials bent ( the right one snapped off about a third of the way from the tip ), his plating is battered & slashed, his left leg is nearly falling off at the knee joint — the only time he can recall that he likely looked worse had been after nearly being beaten to death by one of braid's guards after deadlock had crash-landed on theophany.
but all that he sees in his reflection is red optics, a sardonic grin, & a purple badge.
every version of me that i've lost is buried at the bottom waiting for me to fall.
he brings a fist back & hurls it forward into the crysteel, shattering it with one decisive blow. but his damaged knee gives out seconds later, & drift crumples to the floor in a heap, burying his face in his battered servos with a resigned whimper.

the mercenary bares his fangs in a cruel display of defiance, completely dismissing the expected respect of decepticon hierarchy. ( not that anyone really offers it to starscream anywhere but right to his face anyway. )

drift takes the offered cup with a nod of thanks, seemingly unphased by perceptor's closeness. he's always sort of figured that it's just his nature, so it doesn't bother in the slightest.
" oh ! well, to tell you the truth ... " he ducks his helm almost sheepishly, his finials lowering themselves as he fidgets with his claws around the shape of the mug. " ... i ... i haven't seen a medic in quite a long time. my frame is just kind of worn out. the chronic knee click i've had in my left leg has worsened, & my pede is really sore too ... i just don't want to be a bother to anyone. i promise you that i'm okay, i'm just tired. he's surprised to see perceptor when he pings the door to open, setting his bowl of en-udon on the end table & slowly hauling his creaking frame upright to properly greet his friend.
