In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado is a really good memoir about the author's abusive relationship- framed as a haunted house/horror narrative.

Anyways Jukka Sarasti's quirk is that he says exactly what was quoted but in a funny Dracula voice.

Reading Poor Man's Fight by Elliot Kay. I'm starting to love military scifi. The structure and chain of command is incredibly appealing to me. And i love space! This one however has appealed to me more than usual. I listen to it while working and it's given me a bit of an epiphany. In the book the main character Tanner gets put on the St. Jude with a crew that kinda hates him for no reason and doesn't train him. And I'm like- wow this is exactly how I feel.

Being an overachieving autistic youth I relate so hard to Tanner. While my own experience at work has been more of a net positive than him in the military. The struggles with toxic coworkers/superiors, not being trained properly, and overachieving just... Hits hard.

Especially all the stuff where he never makes a connection with his crewmates. And every little thing he does or says is wrong to them. As an autistic person. Oh. My. God. I have never related to a character more. And it hurts. Anyways can't wait to read this guys further exploits.

So, I have a question for you guys. How many of you guys read actual books with whump? I’m trying to find books that are whumpy, but whenever I try to find books with that sort of tag or plot, they’re always just books with basic violence/fighting or action or two-page-long captivities that leave no effect on the character that can’t be talked out in the next chapter. What I’m looking for is books with characters that face conditioning, characters that get captured and hurt as a main plotline of the story, ones that get rescued by the protagonist or whoever, even the villain, but ones that actually suffer and get a recovery arc. I ask you guys because I feel like the whump community is way more likely to be able to find books like this, that have the tropes that we read and write about here as opposed to readers who stick mostly to well-known normal book tropes. I just haven’t seen any books with a classic feel of whump and recovery that are made into plots. I love reading small series here, of course, but sometimes I’d like to find a book with the same interests that I have here, you know? If any of you guys have any recommendations for YA novels or series that are like this please please please let me know :) bones points for a good rescue scene, I love me some sweet angsty reunions or protective caretakers

Im gonna lowkey advertise my favorite book- the insignia trilogy has a lot of elements that would appeal to the whump community like-

long lasting consequences, trauma, brainwashing (science fiction) and the after effects, frostbite, forced confinement, surveillance, betrayal, blackmail, whumper turned caretaker, interrogations , torture, brainwashing (horribly mundane) and the after effects. And all these things are pretty well explored. I mean. In the last book id say 50 pages is dedicated to the mc going through such horrific psychological torture that he basically develops an alter and becomes a different person. And then the rest of the book is him dealing with the consequences of what happened while he was imprisoned. Both in the world and himself. It's great.

Besides the whump its just really fun. The characters are loveable, it has one of the best mentor characters of all time, like what if snape was well written. It has a terrifying antagonist. Very fun side characters. Very fun love interests. Very good series. Love it.

One thing I was really upset about in The Marrow Thieves was the blatant fatphobia. There's only one fat character. His name is slobber. He eats a lot. He has no other definable traits. The author is skinny. Really sucks going into a story about a marginalized group that perpetuates awful stereotypes of another.
