IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS

summary: an unplanned little gift exchange between you and your boyfriend! today, you learned that your boyfriend is more observant and thoughtful than you had realized :3 (or, three times you surprise tsukishima, and the two times he surprises you...? rip 5+1 format lol)

"Kei…" your voice is soft as you beckon for him to lean down with a quick wave of your hand.

He looks at you quizzically but complies anyway. As his face comes closer to yours, you quickly peck a kiss onto the tip of his nose, running away as you giggle manically. Your boots crunch in the snow, leaving a track of hurried footsteps going in every which direction. He blinks in surprise.

"Huh?"

"What?" You say, feigning innocence, holding out your hands for him to catch up. "Kei, it's cold, let's go home now." A playful whine creeps into your voice as you hop around.

"And whose idea was it to walk around on campus?"

You stick your tongue out at him, but your smile never leaves your face. It had snowed the night before, enveloping everything in a thick blanket of white, and you had practically dragged him from the warmth of your shared apartment to walk around in the snow.

"I wanted to walk in the snow, and we did, so we can go home now."

Tsukishima sighs, shaking his head, but still the corners of his lips are lifted into a small smile. The trudge back to your apartment would have been a fairly short one if you did not pull him onto a more "scenic" path. (He protests with a "Didn't you say you were cold?!", and you pretend not to hear him, of course.)

"Here."

You look up at him from the carefully wrapped box in his hand that's right in front of your nose, not missing the blush tinging his cheeks and the tips of his ears like dusted rose. It hasn't been long since the both of you returned to the apartment, and you had since bundled yourself under the many blankets on the sofa, comfy and cozy.

"What's this?"

"A gift. It's Christmas, isn't it?" His voice doesn't carry the same sardonicism like it usually does, though his words seem clipped. He tries to look you in the eyes, but quickly looks away again. "I was told that… I should get you something... or something…"

You reach to take the gift into your hands, not looking at the box, but him instead. "Oh… Wait—" You jump up from your spot on the sofa, rushing into the bedroom, and return with your own wrapped gift. "I was going to give this to you later today… I didn't know we'd be doing a gift exchange," you giggle.

Replacing his gift to you with yours you settle on the sofa again, patting on the cushion next to you, motioning for him to sit with you.

Tsukishima sits silently, his eyes trained on the gift in his hands, though his knee is pressed tightly against yours. "You first," is all he can manage.

You smile, nodding, and begin to pick away at the tape. The present had been neatly packaged, each crease of the wrapping paper crisp and precise. As the paper finally falls away, revealing another smaller box nestled in some tissue paper. You lift the lid and gasp.

It's a pen. A really nice pen.

Carefully, you remove the pen from the box and admire its elegant design. It fits in your hand perfectly, each groove carved as if you were the only person who could wield it.

"I had it custom-made," you hear him say, "For you."

Placing the pen back into its box, you throw your arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight hug. In his shock, he drops your gift onto the rug beneath the sofa, his hands instead holding you as you embrace him and his body stiff.

"Thank you," you say, "It's beautiful."

He relaxes, melting into your hug as you squeeze him a little bit tighter. When you finally pull away, Tsukishima can only look at you, seemingly having forgotten your present to him at his feet. You place it back onto his lap and grin, "Your turn!"

You can barely contain your excitement as he lifts away the lid to reveal an expensive-looking watch. Immediately, he puts it on, observing the glare of the light onto the watchface. He's smiling still, admiring the color of the band and the sleek design of the hands. "It's nice," he says, "Thank you."

Your brows furrow, a pout already formed on your lips, as your arms fold across your chest. "'It's nice'? Is that all you ha—"

In one swift movement, Tsukishima holds your chin, turning you to face him as his lips land softly on yours, your words dying in your throat. The kiss is gentle, light, and sweet, and he pulls away with his fingers still under your chin. "I love it," he tells you, "And I love you, okay?"

You can only nod, the only words ushered from your lips being a meek, "Merry Christmas."

"Merry Christmas," he echoes back to you, smiling.

koi's notes: if you've gotten to the end, THANK YOU!! a piece of information i would like to share with you for some added context is that receiving a pen in my culture is seen to be as good luck because it's supposed to represent professional/academic success so having read this, you've basically received said pen and there's going to be a positive turn in your career/academic journey!! and apparently receiving a watch as a gift is supposed to represent appreciation of one's time and also commitment so >:3 okay that is all (also if you're confused for the 3+2 format, the thingies are: kiss on the nose, long way home, thank you hug + pen, be quiet kiss !! sorry this made no sense but it did in my head </3)

The rain sticks his hair to his forehead and makes your own feel heavy against your neck. Your clothes cling to your skin, and despite the cool summer rain that makes your fingers feel numb, a shared breath warms you. Dark green eyes stare back at you, sleepily downturned but still clear as glass.

Drops of water hit against your face, and you squint, eyelashes fluttering from the weight. “Jo…” you murmur.

A languid smile curls his lip, “Yeah?”

His body stoops over yours like an umbrella, coaxing you even further under the awning. You pull on his collar, causing him to lose his footing. He reaches a hand out to steady himself, but he now stands with his nose nearly grazing yours, his dreamy expression replaced with that of surprise.

Neither of you move.

A beat passes, then two. You gently cradle his face in your hands, thumbs caressing the smoothness of his cheek. “You look tired,” you say, “You haven’t been sleeping well?”

He hums, giving you a half-hearted answer. You frown, taking a step closer to him, as you wanted to get a better look at him. The rain still pours incessantly, but that’s just beyond the awning. Here, under the awning, you don’t know of any rain. Here, under the awning, it’s just the two of you. 

“Ah, ah, don’t do that…” He steps towards you, using his body to make you stumble backwards. His hand is on the small of your back, and you feel the soft impact of the wooden wall behind you against your shoulders. “You’ll get all wet from the rain.” 

You blink. “Oh,” is all you can manage, “Oh.” 

Your hands are still cupping his cheeks, but he doesn’t pull away from your touch. The rain sticks his hair to his forehead and makes your own feel heavy against your neck. Your clothes cling to your skin, and despite the cool summer rain that makes your fingers feel numb, a shared breath warms you. You study his eyelashes. They’re longer than you expected. Like the delicate wings of a butterfly, they flutter as his gaze shifts between your left and right eye, as if memorizing the color. 

“I won’t say that I like you…”

His voice is hushed, low, and your breath hitches. You press a hand on his mouth, forcing his words back, your eyes screwing shut as you turn away. He blinks, his voice dying in his throat. 

You can feel the muscles of his jaw working under the pads of your fingers. 

Neither of you move.

A beat passes, then two. His hand gently wraps itself around your wrist, his thumb resting on the bone. He pulls your hand away from his mouth, holding it in the space that separates the both of you. Glancing down, he opens his hand, allowing you to pull your hand away, but you don’t. He looks at you again, hopeful.

“I… I wo—”

His words come out breathless, and your ears strain to hear them. Togame closes his hand over yours, raising it over his mouth. His hot breath on your hand makes you shiver. 

You will yourself to look at him again, his hungry eyes coming into view. He looks as if he's barely containing himself.

“Jo,” you murmur, your arms already finding their way around his neck, and you pull him down towards you with more force. Your lips are dangerously close to his. “I like you. I—”

Togame doesn't let you finish, eyebrows furrowed and eyes shut as he presses his lips firmly on yours, swallowing your confession along with your breath. He cradles the back of your neck with a steady hand, kissing you like a man starved. “You don’t know,” he says between kisses, “How long I’ve imagined doing this with you…”

You smile into another kiss, closing the gap between the two of you yourself. He tilts your head back, pushing more of his weight onto you. His tongue pokes out from his mouth, waiting patiently, as if standing at the gates of heaven. You greet it shyly with your own. He groans into the kiss, your name sounding sultry when you hear it coming out of his mouth.

Long minutes feel like mere seconds when you finally pull away, foreheads still touching as you gaze into each other’s eyes. 

Your head is spinning as you smile from ear to ear, one that he returns with a lopsided grin of his own. He gently grabs your wrist again and brings it up to his mouth, kissing softly the insides of your fingertips. Your other hand clutches at the damp fabric of his shirt, and you suddenly wonder if he’s cold. You slide your hand to touch his back, and it’s more wet than you had expected. 

“Jo,” you say, brow furrowing as a weak anger stemming from concern seeps into your voice, “Why didn’t you say that you were getting wet?”

Togame’s eyes widen as he frantically checks your shirt, his hands starting at your shoulders and sliding down your back before resting at your hips. He sighs with relief to learn that you are drier than he is. Laughing, he takes your hands in his again. 

“It’s okay,” he says, still chuckling, “You know what they say. ‘Idiots don’t catch colds.’”

You sigh in disbelief, but a smile already threatens your resolve. Standing on the tips of your toes, you give him a quick peck on the cheek, mirth in your eyes.

Bonus Scene: The Shopkeeper and His Wife

“How sweet.” 

“Hah… Youth…”

A shopkeeper and his wife watch from behind the glass window that separates them from the rainshower outside. The wife chuckles, setting down inventory, “Honey, do you think we should give them an umbrella or something?”

“Don’t bother.” He picks up a box and carries it away. “They seem to be enjoying the rain.” 

The shopkeeper smiles to himself, returning to his wife’s side, and presses a gentle kiss to her temple. “Remember when we were that age?”

Epilogue: A Cool Summer’s Rain

“Jo,” you whisper, giggling quietly to yourself. You lay in bed on your stomach, your feet kicking excitedly behind you. His name tastes different on your lips now. Sweeter, with a hint of a crisp freshness.

You press your fingers to your lips, reenacting the soft kisses he gave you earlier that day, when your phone suddenly starts to ring beside you. 

It’s Togame. 

Quickly, you pick up the phone, hearing his voice sing your name, drawing out the last syllable, when you raise your phone to your ear. 

You smile, wondering if your name tastes like cool summer rain to him, too.
