Learning to swim
jane austen was so lit because she wrote about men the way men typically write about women i.e. her stories just centered around women and men were only there for the sake of women, and her books could have been all bitter and sad about the state of women in that century, but instead they’re sweet honest observational stories of friendship, family and love *sighs* what a lady i am sorry i ever doubted you cos I was bored in high school
no seriously her books do not pass the REVERSE bechdel test and it’s perfect
Jane Austen never wrote a single scene without a woman present.

Ben Whishaw reading “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe. I’ve never heard the strange, tender, spooky heart of it quite so clearly.
(My audio edit from the Poetica podcast, “Tides.”)
I have literally never hit reblog so fast.
I haven’t even listened to this yet, but it’s Ben Wishaw reading poetry. I know you all will appreciate.
This is almost as beautiful as Matthew Gray Gubler reading it.
Hi I'm a rising senior in Maryland and I'm actually going to apply to UMD. Do you have any advice on applying there? Also what do you think made you get the Banneker Key scholarship?
yay thanks for reaching out!! advice for applying:
the application is basically an essay, a few short answers (like 1 sentence each), and an annotated activities list (so like a resume, but with descriptions of each activity). it’s not long but you should definitely start early and give yourself lots of time to get it done!
make sure you are very on top of the app, because it’s such a big school that it takes a really long time for them to process all the parts. if you are missing one you might not know until after the deadline.
on banneker key:
my school sends a lot of kids to umd with the bk every year. no idea if that helped me but hey
my stats (scores and grades) were high enough to be in the ballpark. i was a nmf (which they recognized by waiving my application fee), had similar sat scores, and i sent good sat ii scores even though they don’t require them (who knows if they even looked). i think that at an enormous school like umd, it would be difficult to make it to the bk selection without those grades/scores. if u message me privately i can give u my exact stats, in case you’re curious.
besides that, i basically have no idea. my interview went well (i think) but it’s always hard to tell. it’s conducted by 2 professors and i brought a copy of my school newspaper to show them, which was a good talking point. i also had connected with a different professor earlier and he ended up sending my interviewers tickets for an event to give to me, so that maybe helped me stand out ???? honestly i enjoyed the interview and because it was after my other 11 college interviews (lmao) i definitely felt comfortable.
i don’t know how much this matters (if at all), but i applied for a major in the agricultural/natural resources college, which is very small and might not be as represented in the bk selection ?? unsure tho
i definitely can’t tell you why i got the scholarship because i’m not an admissions officer… but if you have the grades + scores and put together a solid application, i am sure you have a chance!! please let me know if i can help in any other way. i was very fortunate to get the full bk and my final decision was v difficult because of it

basically in a very long and confusing and highly middle school manner, i finally expressed prom interest in a boy i have had a ~crush~ on forever and we are going together :')
