Always That Damn Phone
Synopsis: In which Velvette’s been ignoring her girlfriend, and Y/N has finally had enough of it
TW: suggestive(?) content
A/N: I actually wrote this request like back in February, but I wasn’t satisfied with it. So I deleted it and never got around to rewriting it (due to procrastinating) until now

The sound of a digital keyboard clicking echoed through Velvette’s penthouse as she sat on the couch, typing out another reply to another fan who complimented and praised her latest selfie.
The Overlord was always receiving notifications from her admirers, and just because her girlfriend, Y/N, wanted her undivided attention, didn’t mean she’d stop responding to messages.
And Y/N? Well, she might as well have not been there.
Y/N shifted slightly where she sat beside her, the cushions dipping under her. Normally, that alone would’ve been enough to earn a glance, a distracted hum, something.
But nothing.
Just the steady click-click-click of Velvette’s nails against her phone and the glow of her screen reflecting in her eyes like it mattered more than anything else in the room.
Y/N watched her for a moment longer than she should’ve.
“Vel.”
There was a pause.
“Hm?”
Velvette didn’t look up.
“I was talking to you.”
“You still are, aren’t you?” She replied absently, thumbs still moving, expression unreadable except for the faint satisfaction of whatever message she was typing out.
That stung more than it should have.
Y/N swallowed it down, shifting closer anyway, her knee brushing against Velvette’s thigh. “Do you remember what I just said?”
“Something about your day.” Velvette shrugged, still not looking. “It was fine, I’m assuming.”
Silence fell over the two but Velvette didn’t notice it right away. Why would she? The notifications kept coming—little bursts of validation lighting up her screen, pulling her attention in every direction except for the one that mattered most.
Y/N knew Velvette was busy. She was an Overlord and a popular figurehead online, but being ignored by her girlfriend still stung.
“Do you even hear me anymore?”
Velvette’s typing slowed, just for a second. “I said I did, didn’t I?” She muttered, still not looking up. “You’re fine. Everything’s fine.”
That wasn’t what she asked.
Y/N stared at her, something tight pulling in her chest. “That’s not—.”
“Babe,” Velvette cut in, a little sharper now, like the conversation itself was an inconvenience. “I’m in the middle of something.”
Y/N glanced at the screen, catching a glimpse of hearts, comments and endless amounts of praise.
Right.
Sure.
Okay.
Y/N slowly got up from her spot and made her way into their shared bedroom. The door slammed a bit harder than she had anticipated, not that it mattered though, Velvette barely registered it.
Y/N stood there for a moment, staring at her reflection.
She looked fine and easy to ignore.
Her gaze dropped, fingers brushing over the fabric of her clothes before she let out a quiet, humorless breath.
Talking didn’t work.
Trying didn’t work either.
So maybe she needed to stop trying the way she had been. Velvette didn’t seem to respond to words, but she responded to attention…to aesthetics.
“Fine.” Y/N huffed, turning toward their closet. “We’ll do this your way.”

The clicking continued in the living room.
Velvette had shifted positions now, legs crossed, phone tilted just right as she snapped another quick picture and posted it within seconds.
The comments started rolling in almost instantly.
When Velvette heard the door to the bedroom open, she didn’t think much of it until the color purple caught her attention. When she looked up, she found her girlfriend dolled up in silk.
“What are you doing?”
Y/N didn’t answer right away. She moved like she had all the time in the world, crossing the room with a calm, unhurried confidence that felt different.
Intentional.
Velvette’s gaze tracked her without thinking.
Her phone dipped further.
“I tried talking,” Y/N said finally, voice even. “And that didn’t seem to work. I just miss you.”
Velvette straightened a little, something sharp and curious sparking behind her eyes. “So this was your solution?” She asked, tone slipping into something teasing but thinner than usual, less certain.
Y/N gave a small shrug, settling nearby but not touching her which was new. No leaning in. No trying to pull her attention closer.
If anything, she felt just out of reach.
Velvette noticed that immediately.
Her phone, forgotten for a moment, rested loosely in her hand.
“You’re being dramatic,” Velvette said, but it lacked bite.
“Am I?”
Velvette’s phone buzzed again but neither of them moved.
Y/N tilted her head slightly. “You can answer it,” she said, almost casually.
But Velvette didn’t.
Another buzz.
Then another.
Slowly, Velvette set the phone down beside her.
“Say that again,” she muttered, eyes narrowing slightly, not in annoyance, but focus.
Y/N blinked. “What?”
“What you said earlier.”
“I said that I miss you.”
The words hung there.
Simple, honest and heavy. And for once, Velvette didn’t brush them off.
“You’re right,” Velvette admitted after a second, quieter than usual. “I didn’t notice.”
Y/N’s gaze softened but she didn’t move closer.
That was the part that got to Velvette the most.
The distance.
She leaned forward instead, closing it herself this time, her attention locked in fully now—no distractions, no half way points.
“You’ve had my attention,” Velvette said, studying her. “You just didn’t take it.”
Y/N huffed softly, almost amused despite herself. “I shouldn’t have to fight your phone for it.”
“No,” Velvette agreed, quicker than expected.
There was another buzz from the couch, but Velvette didn’t even glance at it.
Instead, she reached out, her fingers brushing Y/N’s arm, deliberately. “I get it,” she said, not quite an apology, but closer than she usually got. “I’ve been distracted.”
“That’s one way to put it.”
Velvette’s lips twitched faintly. “Alright, I’ve been ignoring you.”
“Better.”
A small silence followed, but this one felt different.
“You could’ve just done this sooner,” she added, tone slipping back into something lighter, though her eyes stayed intent.
Y/N raised a brow. “And reward you for ignoring me?”
“Fair. But you look good.”
Y/N’s lips curved just slightly. “Finally noticed.”
Velvette leaned in just a bit more, a smirk returning but grounded now, not distant.
“Hard not to.”
