[Marvin 3 Tutorial] Using Goodreads in Marvin
You can download Marvin for free from here, and Marvin Side-by-Side (SxS) from here.
Note: The functionality described in this tutorial requires that you update to Marvin 3.1 or better.
Update 3.1 brings native Goodreads integration to Marvin. You can now:
Add books to shelves.
Post status updates to Goodreads.
Select and quote passages from books as status updates.
Linking to Goodreads
Any Goodreads action you perform in Marvin will check whether you are linked to the service. If you aren’t, you’ll automatically be prompted to -- in other words, Marvin will try and link to Goodreads by itself when it needs to. Alternatively, you can link to or unlink from Goodreads at any moment by choosing: Settings > General Settings > Services.
(this is typically a one-time setup)
Linking a book
Marvin needs to know which book in your library matches which in Goodreads. Before performing any Goodreads action for a book, Marvin will need to establish this relationship. You’ll be automatically prompted with a ‘Match book’ search screen to help you establish this link.
(this is typically a one-time setup for a book)
Adding a book to a shelf
In your library, long-press a book (or, if you’re in list view, slide it), and choose “Goodreads, tweet, or post”.
Choose ‘Goodreads’ from the options available.
If you are not linked to Goodreads, Marvin will ask you to.
If the relationship between the book in your library and the book in Goodreads isn’t known, Marvin will display the match screen.
You can now add your book to any one of your ‘standard’ Goodreads shelves, or to a custom one.
Posting a status update
In your library, long-press a book (or, if you’re in list view, slide it), and choose “Goodreads, tweet, or post”.
Choose ‘Goodreads’ from the options available.
If you are not linked to Goodreads, Marvin will ask you to.
If the relationship between the book in your library and the book in Goodreads isn’t known, Marvin will display the match screen.
You can now choose the option to post a status update.
Posting a quote as a status update
This function allows you to select text in a book, choose the Goodreads button from the text popup menu, and send it as a status update.
The first thing we need to ensure is that the Goodreads function is available in the text selection popup menu.
Adding Goodreads to the text selection popup
(this is a one-time setup)
Go to Settings > EPUB book settings.
Scroll down to the ‘Text selection menu’ section, and choose ‘Manage’.
Tap the add button, choose ‘built-in presets’. and choose the “Post quote” Goodreads option.
You might want to reorder the menu items by tapping the main menu button in the top toolbar.
Quoting a passage
In a book, select some text.
Select the Goodreads button from the menu.
Review your post and send it.
Happy reading!
Kris
