Something that has been upsetting me for a long time in the Pucca fandom is the misinterpretation of the Pucca character. I mean, yes, at least as shown in the Jetix series, there are questionable scenes from her, but that does not encompass her entire personality. The idea was to create a character who broke the stereotype of a girl who is submissive to men (a stereotype that is deeply rooted in Korean popular culture, see K-dramas) and who resolves conflicts with intelligence and a bit of violence, showing that she is capable. She likes to cook and wear makeup, even though she's not very good at it, and she dresses however she pleases. I think she's a very fun character for the context in which she was created, and I feel that she's not given the credit she deserves and is only seen as a crazy stalker. In fact, not even all the episodes are about Pucca chasing Garu...

The fact that she doesn't know how to cook but still enjoys doing it strikes me, because her entire family lineage (her ancestor, her grandmother, her uncles, and her father) are professional chefs and masters in the field, and she can barely fry an egg, but she likes to get involved in that area, probably because she has a lot of respect for her uncles/guardians. She also has an artistic touch when it comes to drawing, although when it comes to makeup, it's clear that she doesn't understand it very well. And can we talk about her friendship with Ching? I think it's one of the most beautiful things about the franchise.

I point this out because, in the part of the fandom that I am (or was) a part of, there was a very mistaken idea about Pucca, and I think that it persists today, and they prefer the fanfic version that is literally the opposite of what makes her interesting apart from her relationship with Garu. I've seen it so many times that it tires me.

Anyway, I adore Pucca, and she deserves more credit for who she is.

THIS RIGHT HERE!!!! i couldn't have said it better myself, thank you op. i need more people to understand that she's very unique in her own way instead of just being some one-sided mary sue protagonist idk haha. yeah, she's got that girlboss in her but she's also got her imperfections....those parts of her character is what makes her so fun and likeable, not only that but SHE HERSELF is genuinely just so fun if you ignore the whole chasing around garu stuff. a lot of people failing to see that and hating her just because of the fact that all they see is her only character trait being having an obsession over garu saddens me sm.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks this! I've seen that many people either have a very negative (and exaggerated) view of what Pucca is, or write her in fanfiction as the complete opposite, removing her tomboy side and turning her into someone who suffers for love and whose world revolves around getting attention. It got to the point where it frustrated me so much that, while talking with some friends, I had to get this off my chest somehow.

I like how versatile she can be, both in animation and in merch. She can be a very cute character, but also active and independent in her own right, and Garu complements her aesthetic and essence.

At Target this lady told her son he couldn’t have a Wonder Woman doll because “that’s for girls” and then bought her daughter the same one. It got me thinking about how often I see people bar young boys from appreciating girls/women as protagonists and heroes, and my own experience with it as a kid.

It’s not an accident. It’s misogyny and oppositional sexism, getting successfully passed on by misogynists and sexists to the children under their influence. Of course girls are allowed to think male heroes are better, but a boy thinking the opposite goes against patriarchy.

For a fun encore, this is also pretty much the heart of transmisogyny. Imagine the same bullying effect for acknowledging women are people, but instead of just having female heroes, a “boy” turns out to want to be a girl. Unacceptable to a system that requires everyone consider women inferior: someone who could have been a man, the exalted gender, refuses to. It’s a rejection of the system, and for an idea of how badly conservatives take that, look at what the US gov’t is doing.
