Send me “✋” for my muse’s reaction to yours gently brushing hair out of mine’s face.
Anzu, you wouldn’t happen to know much about desk sex? (Fae I’m waiting to see if you remember this joke from many fandoms ago lmao)
❝------------------------WHAT?!❞
❝ I don’t know where I’m going to either. Everyone is like that. No matter how hard, we have to tread along the path that we cannot see. Because of that you have to trust in yourself and that place where you need to go. ❞
Great. Just peachy. Of all the days to not bring an umbrella, it has to be the one day it decides to actually rain. She stands under the awning of a building, hand outstretched to feel the water against her palm. She doubts it’s going to let up any time soon. For a moment she considers just making a run for it. Then, to her surprise, a rather luxurious black car pulls up beside the curb. She recognises one of Kaiba’s drivers behind the wheel. When the window rolls down, she raises a brow in skepticism. ❝Come to laugh at me, have you?❞ Really, what else is she supposed to expect?

yuugi.
He watches her play the game, knowing that she is more than likely becoming frustrated with the game. Then he finds himself chuckling at her huff, he reaches out and grabs the game from her and starts the level over, wanting to show her how to beat it. This was so much like when they were younger, so much. “Not impossible, just annoying, trust me, I know.” He’d played this game more than once but the first time he had gotten stuck on this very level himself. “You just got to do this and…There we go!” He shows her the screen that reads ‘level completed’
Yuugi never ceases to amaze her. Of course, he’d always been good at games, but even now it still manages to impress her just how easy he makes beating that level look. She’d be envious if he wasn’t one of her best friends. Games just weren’t her strength and that was okay. She had dance. ❝You make it look so easy, Yuug!❞ she laughs, only a little put-out at how quickly he’d beaten it. ❝I don’t know how you do it. I just don’t have the patience for these kind of games.❞
She can feel the Spirit’s presence prickling like cold air at the back of her neck, the way gooseflesh does. Anzu promptly ignores it. This was supposed to be a stress free day, just her and Shizuka. No duelling, no saving the world. Just some girl time. Go away, she thought. Let me have this. ❝--What do you think about this?❞ Anzu holds up a leather jacket. It’decidedly more edgy than her usual choices. Maybe the Spirit is rubbing off on her after all. ❝Do you think it’s too much?❞

She squints a little. It’s hard to hide her suspicion, given their history with the insect duelist. ❝I don’t know where Yuugi is right now, actually. Sorry.❞

It’s middle school all over again. Anzu, struggling with another of those handheld games Yuugi gave her as he looks on. She gives it one more minute, then two, before handing it off with a defeated huff. ❝Alright, I give. This level is impossible.❞

I need to attempt to get my muse up and running again, so consider this a starter call – will probably be one-liners.
The last piece of the puzzle slipped into place, but she didn’t realise it until her room was suddenly filled with coloured lights and what felt like a small cyclone.
Afterwards, she didn’t know how to express the sensation of being sucked deep into her own body. She was still there, still in residence, but there was an abrupt sensation of newness, of nearness that defied description. It was as though her mind, her sense of self, was a reservoir made separate by a beaver dam, and then suddenly one of the twigs in the dam came loose and something else seeped in.
She nestled in the recesses of her brain while this new occupant stood up – using her body – knocking the chair over backwards – her chair – and looked own at her hands – her hands, with the little ink stain on the right thumb from her leaky fountain pen.
“Well,” said a voice. Not hers, but it came from her throat. She knew this later when she retained more consciousness of … everything, really. “Well,” it said, “this is unexpected.” - excerpt from Variation on a Theme
When Yuugi was ten, he gave away the Millennium Puzzle to cement his friendship with Anzu. She didn’t know what kind of gift she was accepting until it was already too late and she was sharing headspace with a recalcitrant spirit. As if being a teenage girl in the 21st century wasn’t complicated enough.
KEY POINTS
This is an open verse, meaning I’m happy to explore situations with anyone willing to try out this scenario with me.
Anzu Mazaki is in possession of the Millennium Puzzle.
In this verse, it is she who acts as a host for the Pharaoh. One thing I want to make clear however, is that her reaction to playing host to a 5,000 year old Spirit is much less amicable ( in the beginning ) than Yuugi. Unlike Yuugi, who was willing to overlook the odd going-ons surrounding Yami’s presence because of his extreme loneliness and run of bad luck, Anzu deals with no such problems. Therefore, she’s much mores suspicious and much more aware of his presence early on than Yuugi in canon. Scribbler puts it best: “Yami is tragic enough to stir her sympathy, dangerous enough to make her feel threatened, but strong enough that she also feels a little protected in having him there.”
Anzu is the reigning Queen of Games ( thanks Yami! ) , making Seto Kaiba her immediate rival. She has a hard time explaining to her friends her sudden interest in Duel Monsters or how the heck she got so stinking good at it. Despite this, Anzu very much still maintains her dream of becoming a professional dancer.
Her personality may be a bit different to canon-Anzu. She’s much more snarky and sarcastic. Playing host to a dead guy will do that to you.
More to be added when necessary.
When will my muse come back from the war?
Rubs her temples. Everything is annoying today.
yami.
Yami sat cross-legged on the fluffy carpet, patiently waiting for Anzu to return. He used her absence to look around the room, scanning the titles in her book shelf, the images on the walls, and the little decorations and collectibles scattered across the room, that added her personal touch to everything. It made him realize how little he actually knew about her. As his gaze wandered over to the wardrobe, he quickly turned away to look down at Yuugi’s notes instead. The wardrobe was closed, but somehow looking at it felt inappropriate. ( Perhaps because it couldn’t be done without imagining what kind of clothes were inside . ) Yami suddenly became hyper-aware of the fact that he was alone in a teenage girl’s bedroom, but luckily Anzu returned before he had time to actually stress about it.
“Mh, he’s taking a break,” he explained, only half lying. After Anzu had left Yuugi had suddenly acted a little strange, claiming that he was tired and couldn’t focus anymore, and eventually asked Yami to take over for a little while, so Anzu could resume her studying. Yami had agreed - not that Yuugi had given him much of a choice. Looking at the notes and textbooks in front of him now, however, he was having minor regrets. Even though he had promised Yuugi to help him study ( despite Yuugi insisting that he wouldn’t help during the actual exam ) he had thus far found the subject too boring to actually pay attention. It made him wonder how great a study partner that made him for either of them.
The dripping cans in Anzu’s hands made Yami aware of how thirsty he was. Yuugi hadn’t eaten or drank anything since lunchtime, which was hours ago. The time and effort him and Anzu put into their school work was actually impressive. “Do you mind studying with me or would you rather I left now?” he asked, figuring this wasn’t just Yuugi’s decision to make. He liked to think of Anzu and himself as friends, but at the same time couldn’t help but feel like she always seemed a little uncomfortable around him.
Anzu’s hesitation only lasted a moment. As she finally entered the room, she returned to her place on the carpet and passed one of the cans of soda over to the Pharaoh, then—discreetly—she made a show of popping the tab open, just in case he didn’t know how to do it. It was hard to tell what he had learned about their modern world and what he hadn’t. He could work his way around Otogi’s duelling system within five minutes of seeing it; but other things, like everyday tasks and objects, seemed hilariously out of his realm of knowledge. Anzu took a sip and then set the can down next to her textbook, picking up where she left off. She’d been helping Yuugi with his English translation before she left, but now, she wasn’t quite sure what to do.
As the Pharaoh spoke, Anzu’s cheeks turned a touch pink. ❝No, no! I don’t mind! Please don’t feel like you have to leave.❞ She waved her hands frantically, a nervous smile breaking across her face. Geez, did she always have to be such a spazz? ❝Actually,❞ she turned thoughtful, suddenly remembering something. ❝Now that you’re here, there’s something I’ve been meaning to give you.❞ Anzu got up and padded over to her bookshelf, retrieving a hefty looking book with a picture of pyramids on the front. As she took her seat again, she laid the book between the two of them with a grin.
❝I found this book at the library the other day and I thought… well, I thought maybe—it’d be of some help to you.❞ The book was about Egypt; it’s pages filled with information on everything from the Valley of the Kings to customs and traditions from that time period.
❝ How do you do that ? Make everything better with a smile ? ❞
It was hard not to blush at the praise. She didn’t think she’d done anything spectacular; she’d just been honest, said what was in her heart and hoped it was encouraging, because that’s what friends did—and the Pharaoh was her friend just as much as Yuugi or any of the other guys. It didn’t matter that she didn’t know much about him—that he didn’t know much about himself—all that mattered was that she knew he was a good person and good friend, no matter what anyone else tried to say.
❝I think—you give me too much credit,❞ she laughed to hide her embarrassment, finding sudden interest in her hands as her gaze averted. ❝I know the guys don’t really know what to think right now, but… I still believe in you and I know we’re going to get Yuugi back. So… so don’t give up hope, okay?❞
