Well, they of course felt their own grief over that sweet kid going way too soon, but it was quickly overshadowed by the need to take care of Connie's mental state, too.

No, no, it's just a silly joke. If anything the whole thing is darker on Connie's side because Steven Does not want her there™ and is the one getting attacked/stabbed/berated (although he does return the last one quite a bit)
Connie squirms in front of her uncomfortably. The kitchen is dimly lit and Doug isn’t gonna be home until 23:00, so here Priyanka is, seeing as she slips further and further away from her, even as she sits just across the table.
“What is it?” She says, and of course she does. These days she barely even talks to them. It’s school, training, studying, sleeping. The mealpreps she made, the “cutting” and “bulking” and the endless trips to beach city, bandages, bruises…
So she goes straight to the point. And Connie knows what she will say, because this is their most common clash.
“I’m worried about you.”
Her daughter sighs. “Mom, for the last time, I’m fine.” She repeats. “My report card is good, I’m eating okay-”
“And for the last time, that’s not what I mean!” Priyanka holds her cup tighter so that the chai would warm her hands. “When is the last time you and I went shopping for clothes? That wasn’t you whining about “wasting time” and only picking sportswear? You don’t own any good dresses, shoes-”
“What do I need to dress up for?”
“To- go to the movies! To go to dinner with a friend from, I don’t know, tennis practice! If you went! Maybe a date-”
“I don’t want to date.” Connie says. “My grades are fine, I’m fit, we eat dinner together, what else do you-”
“You aren’t just in this house.” Priyanka said. “You’re alive, and right now, you don’t even think that.”
“You keep- controlling me! It’s so unfair! I’m already going to therapy like you said!”
“That is the bare minimum.”
“Why are you so obsessed with me being exactly the way you want?! I’m not gonna be a mini-you!”
“Connie, it’s not that I don’t want you to be yourself, it’s that I want you to be sane-”
“This is me, sane!” She said, standing up.
“Young lady if you do not sit back down!” She ordered. “Not having friends isn’t sane.”
“Weren’t you a loner before dad? Was that sane?”
“That was different! I had to finish my studies-”
“I've got my goals too! I wanna be stronger!”
“But what comes after that Connie? What are you aiming for?”
“I have to keep training-”
“To what, get yourself killed too?” it slipped out.
Connie stands in silence before her, stunned.
Priyanka swallows. “I can’t- I’m sorry I said that, but get stronger to go against… what? It’s- it’s bad, I can’t lose yo-”
“Go fuck yourself Mom.” Is the next slip. Connie seems on the verge of tears saying it, covering her mouth like she can’t believe it herself. She watches her walk out the room, hears her heaving while running up the stairs and knows that by the time she slams her bedroom door shut, she will already be crying.
She will be eighteen soon. She won’t be able to keep her in the house. Or in school, if she chooses not to go. Priyanka knows that she can ground her until then, but she does not have the grounds to convince her to stop doing this to herself. No one can, unless the kid magically resuscitates
Somewhere in the deepests wastelands of homeworld there are a million broken and discarded busts of a woman who only existed enough to make someone to be obsessed with creating her.
at first I thought the concept of Steven drawing her would be fun, because he does show some interest in drawing when young (Guitar dad, Lisa and Archimicarus wedding) but I think growing up he would be interested in a more sensory process, since he does get to be the person that sees her actual face the most in dreams and hallucinations, He would be interested in being able to touch her. Mostly to take his anger out on her phisically.
Edit: When I made these pieces, I wrote this chunk of... something about how he would explain the weird habit he has
“She isn't real. She is just what I make of her. If I try to doodle or paint her it's not the same, I need to feel her, I need to crush her in my hands when I'm angry at her. I need to be able to hold her when I’m alone. She can’t hold me back, or hurt me. It feels like it should be her right.”
