Emergency Eggs [Ellen & Candace]
invisibledisaster:
Candace sighed with relief, rolling her eyes to the ceiling at her by-the-skin-of-her-teeth luck. Who knows where she’d be if she’d been held up in travel an extra hour or two? “You just saved me, Ellen,” she reassured her friend, resting her hands on the shop’s counter and folding them nervously.
She watched the eggs approach with all the gratefulness in the world. Thank you, thank you, thank you universe.
“A ton of cookies,” she replied as Ellen comes back to the counter, offering her friend a frazzled smile. “Which is kind of an exaggeration, to say a ‘ton’… but not by much. My grandma is gonna have a little get-together tomorrow with some of her friends from when she was younger, isn’t that cute..? And I said I’d love to make some snacks for them… until I found out how many people were coming.. and how few eggs Horn Ranch had…”
“Oh, that is adorable!” Ellen said when Candace mentioned the get together between old ladies. She hadn’t got to meet her grandmother too well before she passed away, but she knew that Candace treasured hers very much.
When Candace mentioned that many people were coming, she chewed on the inside of her cheek. “If a lot of people are coming, do you need another dozen? I haven’t gone out to get the eggs in the coop yet, if you do,” Ellen said.

Emergency Eggs [Ellen & Candace]
@aprongirlellen
Candace let herself in through the shop’s front door, having to smooth herself down from the frazzled mess she was sure that she was. Travel had always been something she tended to shy away from— and even the short, bumpy ride between Castanet and Flowerbud flustered her poor nerves. Whether it was the actual carriage working some sort of hex on her she didn’t understand, or some product of her nervousness come to life in tangible form, the short journey always left her hair feeling as though it’d taken on a strange component of static cling. Candace was, each time she popped her face into Blue Sky Ranch’s shop, very much like a dryer sheet that had accidentally tumbled around in a second load of laundry.
“Hi, Ellen,” she mumbled as she approached the counter, still smoothing a palm down over the front of her straight cut bangs, now currently not so straight. Under the motion, she wore a soft, rueful smile. “Please tell me you guys aren’t out of eggs…? Horn Ranch ran out this morning, and I have so much baking I gotta start tonight..”
Ellen couldn’t help a small smile at the poor dear--Candace always seemed to look so frazzled just about every time that she saw her, and she felt bad but she was slightly amused by it. Surely it was another very important bit of business.
“Oh no, we do still have eggs, and you’re quite lucky, too, since they’re the last dozen in stock for today!” Ellen said, going to get the aforementioned dozen, and coming back with them. “What are you baking, Candace? If you don’t mind me asking?”
Apple A Day - Open
After getting all of the good apples off of the ground and into the baskets (and even some of the bruised ones, since she felt bad leaving them there), Rachel stood up and brushed herself off before offering her hand out for the other woman to shake.
“Nice to meet you, too, Ellen! Are you out here getting some good apples, too? I was thinking of using mine for baking, hehe~” Rachel beamed as she held her basket of apples, her arm hooked through the wide handle. “Probably pies, since I feel like it’ll put everyone in the season’s mood, you know?”
Ellen gave the girl’s hand a firm shake. “Oh yes, I am out here looking for the better apples--at least the ones that are fully intact!” Ellen said as she inspected the apples in her own basket.
Ellen smiled brightly, nodding. “Great minds think alike!” She said with a laugh. “I was actually thinking of doing the same, for baking. I was thinking of doing either apple pies as well--or maybe galettes... oh, or maybe turnovers!”
Chicken Run || Ellen and Nadi
.❀. Flowerbud Village, aptly named for its wealth of flora and fauna, was a cozy little town. It was one of his favorite places to visit, as Nadi found that he always felt considerably calmer whenever he came here. The layout of the village wasn’t as complicated as say, some other towns, especially not the city, and it didn’t have all that stifling hustle and bustle, either.
He had gotten done with his job for the day, and had been on his way back to the inn when a small chick immediately ran into his path, the gardener stumbling back in surprise when he stepped forward and almost ended up trampling the little guy. “Whoa…!” His heart was hammering in his chest from the close call, and Nadi bends down to scoop up the fluffball into his palms. “What’s a little guy like you doing out here, huh?” He mumbles, “Shouldn’t you be in a coop somewhere?”
And, almost as if it was an answer to his question, Nadi hears more cheeping from up ahead, followed by the frantic pleas of a person. With one brow arched in confusion, Nadi glances up to see a group of chicks scattering and running every which way, with a girl trying (and failing) to gather them all.
…Huh. They must’ve escaped from somewhere.
After catching another chick that happened to come his way, Nadi gets back to his feet and approaches the girl. “What in the world–” He suddenly outstretches his foot to prevent another chick from running straight into the river, “–is going on here?”
Ellen’s heart hammered in her chest as she fluttered to and fro along the riverside path, picking up as many baby chicks as she could hold in her arms as they all tried to wriggle out of her grasp. Several little talons dug into her skin but she tried to ignore the pain at the moment.
She had dashed by the man several times, but it wasn’t until she had tried to grab a chick that was heading for the rushing waters that he had finally called out to her.
“Oh!” Ellen cried in surprise. “Goodness, I’m so sorry sir, these chicks all got loose--” Ellen said as she stooped to pick another one up.
Sense of Direction [Ellen & Johnny]
“Oop—” came Johnny’s immediate reply - nearly dropping his bag of pumpkin seeds in surprise for her surprise. He managed to keep a hold of them, if only just— and he turned a sheepish smile up at the woman once he was sure he wasn’t going to make a fool of himself by covering the ground between them an explosion of snack.
“Sorry— didn’t mean to scare you. … Hey— you okay?”
The stranger’s frustration was apparent the moment he took a second look at her, and his brow knit in worry for her. She looked like he felt about five minutes ago. “It’s kind of a big maze, huh? Hey, if you wanna take a break, I don’t mind sharing my pumpkin seeds.” He shook the bag gently to indicate what the contents of it were, trying on what he hoped was a reassuring smile.
“Sometimes you gotta get a quick snack to make it through a task like this, yeah? Or— I dunno. I do, at least.”
“Oh--yes, yes, I’m fine,” Ellen said, fixing eyes on the man and giving a small smile in response. “Just... terribly flummoxed at the moment.”
She smiled a little less timidly at the man’s kind gesture. Nobody else in the maze really gave her even the slightest backward glance and she felt alone in addition to lost, but here was this kind man offering to share the snack he had with him.
“Oh, I would really appreciate that, if it doesn’t trouble you.” Sure, he could have just been offering genuinely, but it could have also been a gesture, so she had to be sure.
Knit Knots | Ellen & Yuri
@aprongirlellen
Promoting a knitting program had taken a lot out of her. Ironically, it was mostly her mother, Emma, that did most of the promoting, but Yuri had the unequivocal prickling feeling that it had worn her out. It wasn’t distress. She didn’t feel distress. She didn’t often feel much of anything at the surface, unless she dove into the murky waters of introspection.
But a solitary thought protruded from the depths of her mind. Would anyone come?
It was a lonely thought for a lonely person. If she could be considered lonely. She dichotomized the thought of loneliness with that of being alone. And she concluded she was more of latter than the former. So… was it an ‘alone’ thought for an ‘alone’ person? Hm.
She prepared sweet cake rolls and assorted balls of yarns that spoke to her in waves of scarlets and violets. Like a field of flowers that she had resting in her basket, at an arm’s length away. In the background, her mother had started running her favorite vinyls, drowning out the ‘alone’ silence with a [vintage hum]. It took silence hand in hand and danced with a spring in its step. And it hummed, and hummed as it spun the still air on its toes. If silence was anything like yarn, it would have had a dozen or so knots already…
As the strings swelled, bells from the door suddenly jingled out of place. And she—albeit appearing rather deadpanned—stared at the new arrival a bit too abruptly. Opening her mouth, she hoped that the words would fall naturally. And oh boy. They sure did. (Not really.)
“…Welcome… Please settle down……” She gestured stiffly to the seat next to her. “The first Patchworks Knitting Program… is about to begin.”
When Ellen had seen a flyer for the Patchworks Knitting Program back in her hometown of Flowerbud Village, she didn’t mind at all that the event would be taking place a few towns over--it was all the more reason to go, as she loved traveling now and then!
She had been smiling on the whole ride over, her knitting bag slung on her shoulder as she guided her horse through the streets of Echo Village. Once she had found the place that was named on the flyer, Ellen tied her horse’s reins to a nearby post and hopped off. “Alright, Pablo, I’m going to be gone for a little bit, but I’ll be back, so you be good, y’hear?” Ellen said, stroking the paint horse down the side of his neck. The horse seemed to reply to his master with a nod of his head.
After this, Ellen walked through the door. “Hello...oh--” Ellen looked inside the Tailor’s shop, slightly shocked at how few people were there. In fact, it was only her and the hostess. “Oh, hello! I’m glad I made it in time!”
Chicken Run || Ellen and Nadi
@illumxnadi
Running the ranch was certainly a full-time job in itself already when you didn’t have much by way of staff and lots and lots of animals.
But it only happened to get so much worse when you are prone to a scatterbrained moment now and again, and you accidentally leave the gate open for a good portion of the baby chicks to go toddling away from the ranch and into harms way.
When Ellen noticed this, the first thing she did was went to close the gate before the bigger animals could mosey out, and hopped over the fence to capture the little puffballs that were getting themselves into trouble.
“Nonono, sweeties, come back! Don’t go near the river, you’ll get swept away!” Ellen shouted in a panicked voice.
Sense of Direction [Ellen & Johnny]
@aprongirlellen
Well, at least the point of the corn maze was to get lost. It made him feel a little better about the situation he’d landed himself in.
He was glad now that he’d thought to bring a snack into the maze, because after nearly an hour of wandering past what he was sure was the same section of corn stalks over and over again, he was starting to get peckish. After reaching the same clearing in the center of the maze that he’d found twice before, he took a seat on one of the hay bales that had been stacked for just this occasion - fishing the bag of roasted pumpkin seeds that he’d tucked in the inside pocket of his jacket earlier that day.
As he snacked to get his energy back up, he watched the occasional passers-by. Some of them he’d bumped into once or twice in the narrow passageways, some of them he didn’t recognize. Some seemed to be enjoying themselves, and some seemed frustrated with their experience. He didn’t blame any of them - smiling at the occasional peal of laughter from a few yards away beyond one of the walls, and frowning at the occasional shout of confusion.
Ah, well.
“How’s it going?” he asked of one such maze-goer - a pretty girl with short brown hair - who happened to pass him in close proximity than some of the others who’d wandered quickly through the clearing.
It was a good idea at the time, Ellen thought as she rounded the corner in the maze. She had no idea that the maze would be so much trouble for her, since it looked so... so simple from the outside.
Well... that was probably the point. To be deceptively simple.
Either way, Ellen was so focused on feeling her way out of the maze that she was slightly startled when a man had called out to her, putting a hand to her heart to steady it after letting out a small squeal. “Oh--goodness. Ah, I’m doing alright! I suppose,” Ellen said, brows furrowing as she looked around the maze in frustration.
Apple A Day - Open
It wasn’t too often that Rachel found herself travelling, what with having to run the farm back in Echo Village and the whole Town Revitalization thing, but it was always nice to get away and do something nice when the season called for it. This time around, Rachel found herself travelling to Castanet for some apple-picking. She’d heard lots of good things about Marimba Farm and decided that she’d bring back some apples to make a nice pie or some cider.
She spotted someone struggling a bit as they tried to reach some apples and Rachel immediately hurried over to help with a bright smile. Sure, she was only a couple inches taller than her but every inch counted! Rachel picked up a branch of her own and helped knock some apples from the tree, then turned to smile at the girl.
“Those apples really didn’t want to come down, did they?” She giggled and started to help pick the apples up, placing most of them in the other girl’s basket. “My name is Rachel. What’s yours?”
Ellen hadn’t noticed the woman that came to help her until she also picked up a branch and started beating on the tree as well, and a deep red blush creeped onto her face, embarrassed as she looked at her.
“Oh--” she held her basket out to the woman as she picked up a few apples, then leaned down to help her. “They really didn’t want to, no. They certainly look ripe so I wonder if it’s just that they have strong stems!”
She gave the other woman a smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Rachel! My name is Ellen.”

Ellen simply loved the changing of seasons, but most particularly, she loved the change from Summer to Fall. Her birthday was in the fall, so that was what she was most excited about, but she also got excited about certain other things surrounding fall too.
Sitting around the fireplace with a good book and not being judged for not wanting to go into the cold, going horseback riding through the colored leaves, cozy sweaters and knitted socks each day without fail, and of course..
Baking apple pie.
Ellen made the journey to Marimba Farm on Castanet, as they had some of the most splendid apples each fall--if she could only get to the more ripe, juicy apples that were up above. She tried in vain to poke the apples down with a branch she had found on the ground beside her feet.
