HE HATES HER TYPE THE MOST. No, it is not the quiet type of individuals that he loathes but rather the type who flinch so readily at what seemed like everything and anything. However unkind his tone, it was not as though he sought to threaten her and so why it was she felt afraid was beyond his understanding. He remains ignorant, perhaps, to the sensitivities of others ââ ( or maybe he knows and he simply chooses not to acknowledge it ).
He loathes to admit that her understanding makes him feel a touch guilty for snapping at her in the first place. Violet gaze is downturned, but not before he just barely catches a glimpse of the way she tucks her hair behind her ear. The arms crossed over his chest tighten their grasp on opposite arms and teeth ride against the bottom of his lip, barely visible but there nonetheless. He bites back the apology that persists at the back of his throat.
No, he wonât apologize. He has nothing to apologize for.
The guilt is stifled when his gaze falls upon the page on the counter. Ego fuels him and he cannot help the smug smile that pulls at the corner of his lips. Ah, so she was here to ask about a recipe? Made enough sense. He was Yolandaâs diligent protege. Maya was neither capable nor was she a personality that got along well with Candaceâs. That wasnât to say that Chaseâs was any better either, but at the very least, she wouldnât have her ear talked off.
Or maybe she preferred that. He hadnât the faintest notion.
He straightens up, letting his arms drop back down to his sides before offering a hand to the other. Palm is face up, digits curled just so as if to suggest she could hand him the recipe. Itâs like beckoning to a frightened animal, he realizes, and so he does not move to alarm her. âIf I was busy, do you think Iâd have spared the time to talk to you in the first place? Out with it then before I change my mind.â
She hesitates only for a second or twoâ her cheeks puffing up ever so slightly with affront, the quiet spark of a quiet temper flaring to life under the surface of her heavily-lidded eyes. He hadnât needed to be that rude. Wasnât it his job to âspare the timeâ to talk to people who came to the bar like this? But the wind is gone from her sails as quickly as it had filled them. After all, this situation isnât exactly the one Chase signed up for when he started working here - and she ought to be grateful, really, that heâs decided to listen to her at all.Â
And after all, it was always better to err on the side of caution and assume that she was the problem. (She usually was, if Julius had anything to say about it.) Candace hands the recipe over as the (malnourished and timid) fight slides out and away from her, and her voice is soft once more when she allows herself to respond to him.
âThis is a recipe my mom wrote by hand,â she begins, a little embarrassed with the details of the situation. Embarrassed to be laying them out on the line like this. âOr, well.. I guess itâd be more correct to say that itâs a photocopy of the recipe she wrote. She jotted it down in the margin of a cook book, so you can just ignore the text on the side there.. but, anyway. The problem is that when she wrote it down, she wrote it in Englishâ and her English wasnât really the best. She didnât make any other notes along with it, and grandma Shelly isnât really sure what it says, either. I canât even tell you how long the two of us squinted over it..â
Candace shrugs one shoulder - a gesture as slightly off-center as the rest of her. She turns her eyes down to her hands, lacing them together, unlacing them, watching them shift uncomfortably. Anything to keep from looking up at him.
âI thought itâd be kind of nice, to make Mont Blanc the way she did? I havenât had it since I lived out in the city, and of course I could get a recipe online, but Iâve just had really bad luck with recipes Iâve found and it never turned out quite the same as I remember.. so I brought it up to Yolanda, and she said that you had a pretty good eye for stuff like this. Figuring out what should be in a recipe, you know? And maybe being able to see something I was missing. So I thought...â
What had she thought? She paused for just a moment, making her actual thoughts a little softer before letting them free. âI thought you might be able to help me. ...if that's okay.â
