You have copyright at the moment of creation. You don’t need to file. (Of course, if you are going to sue, you would need to file in order to get statutory damages.)

(I am assuming in this case that you are a cat, that you know how to use the mail service, and that you have the $25, or whatever it costs these days, for copyright filing.)

You say this with your mouth but I know your mind is already gone and I can’t stop what’s about to tumble from your lips even if I tried.

There’s nothing right to be made I’ve made my peace with your words before you even said them.

I stop.

You’re not supposed to say that, your eyes aren’t supposed to mean it, your hands aren’t supposed to be warm and inviting.

You’re supposed to leave.

And I hope you know the ramifications if you don’t.

When you can’t

She was something.

When you wake up feeling like the world is nothing but pressure, nothing but a straight jacket, nothing but a hand on your throat, you are left bereft of air and of thought.

When you sleep fitfully, against sheets tirelessly moving, endlessly trying to reach dreams that are no longer available.

When your hand stretches out trying to take whatever is left but all you feel is cold the absence of what was there how do you crawl onward?

How do you take the sunlight and feel its warmth when you’re too busy remembering yesterday’s chill.

How do you take the clouds against a pure-blue sky and see their shapes, not the rain they hold.

How do you do anything other than take breaths that hurt lungs and hurt heart.

How do you keep the tears that rival your hopes from falling against you, tiny reminders you are not as okay as you thought.

How do you say goodbye to the parts of you you hate when they are all that’s left and you’ve forgotten how to love.

She was something caught between her teeth and her excuses and she couldn’t let that go.

stop hitting the snooze

your eyes are open but you're not awake; you see credit card numbers, security codes, nutrition facts, and jumbled statistics that you take without a second glance, you see unemployment and inequality but you blame the system and fall prey to children dying on your television.

your eyes are open but you're still asleep; you see cell phone bills for new phones, sleeping pills, quick fixes for problems the size of ant hills, you focus on the seconds you spend breathing, you slip further, you sleep deeper you stay far away.

your eyes are open but you won't wake up; you see crime rates, you see over-filling prisons, you fight for nothing except for a better system for you, you don't see the profiles the misdemeanor of media distraction or the people in the prisons shaded by metal bars and false accusations.

your eyes are open but all you do is blink; blink away the debris of what you don't want to see because it's too much, too much, you're making this out to be more than it seems is all you can seem to say and you dream it's true otherwise you'll have to face facts.

so wake up, shake off the rust take off the blinders, blink away the dust that's settled from years of turning a blind eye.

wake up.

admittance letter

i want to write

but not just, not just write because if i just write that's it

words on a page i glare at until i scratch them out or backspace over or

i want them to look like hills to sound like a door's creak and i want them to grab at you to suck your breath right from your throat to support them

i want to take my hand and draw the words i can't find in doodles until i surprise myself even though i won't

my words have the weight of feathers and price of pennies but i cling to them as all i know even if they're not very good

i really do just want to write

but i'm not very good

my words don't smell divine or jump off the page or intoxicate your ears with a ringing so true it shatters your bones

so i'll pretend to write

when it suits me, mostly when i'm awake to satisfy my craving and to patch up the chasm being jaded has made

and i apologize

because i'm not very good

and i'm trying not to care about that anymore.
