Your worst or best electronic show: which one makes a bigger difference?Ā
Iāve seen 150+ bands, artists and DJs live. Iāve been to quite a few music festivals, and I prefer to attend them over individual concerts because they are usually more eclectic in sound, and you wonāt find yourself standing in a humid music hall for hours on end.Ā
My first music festival was actually Warped TourĀ ā09. I used to be really into alternative music, that is, before the electronic scene grew exponentially larger in terms of different genres and artists. My first electronic festival was Spring Awakening (SA) in Chicago, 2012. This was probably a year after I began listening to electronic music.Ā
There are too many (or maybe too few) details I remember from SA. All I know is that I had a great time, and it was that concert festival that really drew me into electronic music. I think this is why an extremely good show can make a bigger difference than one that is extremely terrible.Ā
I recently saw Caked Up at a nightclub near Harvard last week. Although they do pretty good remixes, I just didnāt vibe off the sound. I was able to get up close near the DJ booth and watch them play - knob turning took over the majority of the act, and some of the transitions were off. To me, itās a shock Caked Up went from performing at Lollapalooza 2015 to this - tickets were even free for 21+. It was definitely one of the worst shows Iāve ever attended, but itās nothing to complain about because my expectations were set low in the first place.Ā
Once you see an unforgettable show, itās really hard to be that mad about a forgettable one. Electronic music is so diverse. It can be as big or as little of an experience you want it to be, from the crowded room of a nightclub to the woods in Michigan, cruise boat on the caribbean or campgrounds of Tomorrowland.
I thoroughly enjoy every song on Porter Robinsonās newest album, Worlds. Itās both melodic and cacophonous; it tells a story and then burns the book from which it derives. Hereās a taste of his music live, at Coachella 2015.Ā
