basically a relationship between people isn’t a series of economic transactions and it’s really unhealthy to think of it that way

oh yeah since i wasn’t clear about this I do think that there is some value in using ‘emotional labor’ to describe the work that people are sometimes forced to do in unhealthy, severely unbalanced relationships like for example what is expected of a heterosexual marriage

this is with the caveat that the term ‘emotional labor’ only describes UNHEALTHY and UNBALANCED dynamics between people when its used to describe interpersonal relationships. a genuine friendship doesn’t have emotional labor, it just has people who care for each other a lot and are naturally motivated to be kind to each other in whatever way they can
