Keith - Eurasian Hobby

Eurasian Hobbies are small, slender, compact falcons. These birds of prey are pale and dark, with a touch of their signature red. Their scythe-shaped wings have a span of only 75 cm. Their flight is fast, powerful, agile, and acrobatic. Eurasian hobbies are known for their remarkable skill, and they catch birds, bats, and large insects in mid-air (or “on the wing”). They are also known for their spectacular aerial displays, such as passing food to each other at lightning speeds during courtship. These impressive raptors follow forest fires because they flush out prey for the hobbies to snatch out of the sky. Eurasian hobbies prefer open areas with some trees, and are rare strays in North America.

Lance - Black-Footed Albatross

Albatrosses are seabirds with long, narrow wings. The largest albatrosses have wingspans of 12 feet! They spend most of their time at sea, and take off from the water by running into the wind. They can spend months at a time without ever touching land! These birds are masters of gliding, and can travel thousands of miles barely expending any energy. The black-footed albatross is a relatively small bird, with a wingspan of only 2 meters. They nest on sandy beaches, and dive for fish and squid. Black-footed albatrosses come together in flocks, although some may be solitary.

Pidge - Allen’s Hummingbird

Hummingbirds are small, fast, and agile. They’re the only birds that can fly backwards! They can also fly up, down, sideways, and can hover. Because their metabolisms are so high, hummingbirds go into torpor (similar to hibernation) at night to conserve energy. The smallest hummingbirds (around 5 cm long) can achieve 80 wing-beats per second, and hummingbirds’ top speeds exceed 15 meters per second! Allen’s Hummingbirds are solitary birds who make their nests out of plant matter, and bind them with spider silk. They can be very aggressive and territorial, and will attack hawks and kestrels even though they only are 3 inches long!

The kea is the only alpine parrot on the planet, and is one of ten parrot species endemic to New Zealand.  It belongs to the same family as the precious moss potato, the kakapo, and the colourful kaka.  Its clownish nature is so well-known that a group of kea is called a circus!
