the departed is great because studios were like "stop wanting to make a movie about jesus and make a hollywood remake of this hong kong film" and scorsese was like "ok, this will be a commentary on the boston archdiocese sexual abuse scandal" and jack nicholson was like "i am gangster humbert humbert / this boy's father confessor" and matt damon was like "guess it's another repressed homosexual role" and leonardo dicaprio was like "what a great opportunity to practice my frowny faces!"

I don’t think we needed to see the extended 4k edition but, and don’t swing at me, I think Daemon’s Alyssa vision genuinely did a good job re-iterating Daemon’s sexism as it manifests in his inability to feel something for a woman in a way that’s not sexual and reminding you that hey, surprise! valyrian eugenics incest actually is shocking and vile even if they got you used to it and it creates people who are fundamentally incapable of even semi-healthy interpersonal relationships because normal expressions of affection are sexualized in service of the blood purity they desperately need to keep an iron grip on the populace down to half the rooms in the fucking castle being decorated with pornographic murals of old valyria. Yes it was deeply unpleasant to watch but like the principle behind doctrine of exceptionalism is viscerally disgusting and abusive and so was the vision like it makes sense sorry
