“maybe the earthlings were onto something with their naming then. at least it made it easy enough for the rest of us to identify things. though it does seem like they were a bit too literal with this one.” not that she needed some scientific genus name, but the creature did look like the perfect mix of a squid and eel, so it did make sense, but a bit too on the nose.
“mhm, i did. lingered a little too long at the booth eavesdropping on someone and the shop keep got fed up with me not purchasing something, so i had to buy something. apparently that also meant hearing this whole story about some mythical creature. seemed far fetch but i troubled him enough, i could shut up and listen.”
phee smiled a bit at the thought of getting such entertaining stories from their father. “my dad was the same, always coming back home with some exciting tales from his adventures.”
“i grew up on a ship, my parents were scientists. needed for exploring new places and all. i got to tagalong in a sense, but hardly got to see anything other than the domestic levels of the ship.” she shrugged, moving past it. “sort of ended up here by accident. i mean, i wanted to travel but ran out of credits sooner than i thought, so i didn’t make it too far. got lucky falling in with you guys.”
"oh, an eavesdropper, are you?' another, airy laugh. maybe that was a HOBBY mara could take up when she went INTO the city. even with the protection of arah's assassins and damien's keen gaze, mara rarely VENTURED out on her own. too fearful that hektor would pop up out of the blue. but for all she knew, he was dead in a crater somewhere.
the secretary leaned forward, CHIN in her hands. round eyes twinkled brightly as she LISTENED to ophelia's story. "that sounds like such a delight. my life was MOSTLY spent on one planet." she frowned. "didn't realize what i was missing till i moved and found myself here." and rowis was SOMETHING. mara had never been SURROUNDED by so much glitter and glitz and wealth. she seemed like a CHILD compared to those who lived here.
"i know artis and phara might disagree, but a feel a sense of FAMILY, here. despite people's occupation." she shrugged. maybe mara should be more put-off by the fact she worked for an ASSASSINATION company. but with what happened with hektor and the way her brother's face had MURDER written on it when she'd gained consciousness in the hospital, maybe some people DID deserve to die. "so, you're n good hands."
“you would not be familiar with someone able to work on a ship without questions asked, would you?” her first time alone, out in the universe — and her ship breaks down. she had no way of finding help without someone else, not too sure where she had ended up. “i am in great need.. o-or at least, would you mind if i were to ‘hitch’ a ride with you and your friends?”
her presence, phara had been told, WAS INTIMIDATING. maybe it was the dark hair, combat boots, or PULSATING light tattoos that speckled her skin. but she wasn't a HEARTLESS being. even if she was a killer.
"i actually know of a place." and that's ONLY because she hacked into damien's system without him knowing. and, well, his last name was a DEAD GIVEAWAY. "just an hour from here. real good mechanic called cayne's or something. i can send them a message and take you there, if you want."
“no, no, i think that covers it.” she said, watching her from her seat across from her. everyone in the crew seemed to have some sort of secret, she did herself, but there was something about the other woman that had her almost on edge. surely she wouldn’t do anything to her, but she couldn’t guarantee it either, especially after hearing about her past.
“i trust your skills. i’m sure damien trusts you too to bring you on so i’ve really no reason to question that, yeah?” clearing her throat a bit, ophelia studied the other a bit closer. “why here then? i know the lot of us, we’re a bit of a motley crew, but why throw your lot in here?”
skeptical brow arched, though the smirk on phara's mouth failed to solidify her expression. she thought MARA and ophelia could be thick as thieves. timid rabbits and all that. ophelia was the type of person PHARA could chew and spit back out. again, damien would be pissed with blood on the floor. and phara didn't feel a NEED to kill the red head.
"damien isn't the sort to compliment on a JOB WELL DONE. i suppose the pay he gives is compliment enough. boss-man hasn't fired me and i'm still alive. guess that's a good enough reason."
lounging in her chair, brown eyes TRAVELED up and down ophelia. "my inability to keep my ANTICS to myself drew the attention of wardy, has artis or damien mentioned him? guess you could call him an unofficial recruiter. anyway, caught his attention and he put me in touch with aa. i have this incurable addiction to adrenaline and adventure. NEARLY cost me my life a few times. and when the UNIVERSE tells you you're meant to be alone, well, you look for THINGS to fill that empty void in your chest. the thrill of stalking prey and NOT getting caught is exciting." phara held her breath for a moment before running ANOTHER critical eye over ophelia. "what are you running or HIDING from that brought you here? what do you do, anyway? assistant to mara?"
“not worth it?” she wasn’t sure about that, but she did let him hold her back. “i think they’re very worth it. bastards deserve to be taught a lesson.” not that she was the person to teach said lesson in any capacity.
“artis, just let me at them for… five minutes, i can handle this. i had brothers like them, they can’t be that hard to go up against.”
years later, countless BREATHING techniques and practice still couldn't SWAY the sudden rush of anger that FLOODED through artis' system. mainly focused on OPHELIA for making poor life choices.
"brothers or not," he bit out. "they will WIPE the floor with you. push you around and rough you up. I'LL," free finger jabbed at his chest. "well be the one FORCED to clean up your mess. i don't want to do that TODAY. let them fuck off and get hit by a shuttle, okay?"
it's is agreed by EVERYONE in aa that mara is to be protected at ALL costs. damien is the only one who knows the full extent of mara's past and what her ex boyfriend did to her. in turn, mara is the only one who knows the MOST about damien, though it isn't much.
every employee of aa always makes sure that mara has EYES on her, is escorted to her vehicle or home, and is rarely left alone. (unless she's in her house.)
artis does not like phara. he thinks she's too LOUD and annoying. he doesn't understand why damien hired her nor does he THINK she's good in the field.
artis is someone who takes his job seriously and does it well. his impression of PHAR is that she doesn't take her job seriously. he keeps waiting for the day she ends up dead or near DEATH, sent as a message to damien.
"you're cute," phara hummed, serpentine smile on her face. "if a bit quiet." the assassin shrugged, combat boots HEAVY against the floor. "i think you could use a GOOD and fun dose of adrenaline in your life. it makes EVERYTHING better. what do you say to threading the NEEDLED with me in that shiny new ship over there?" a shiny new ship that PHARA would borrow. damien would have her head if he found out. @lookedinfinite
“some people would say the opposite, especially given my company.” phee mused, taking a long drink. “definitely don’t need to succeed that much. getting by well enough without being too reckless. no more than normal, at least.”
“if i’m ever that hard up for credits, then maybe I’ll end up there, but at least I’m not dumb enough to go alone either. i’d drag one of you lot into it first, definitely.”
he felt it, the itching in his throat to laugh. but damien kept his voice in check, allowing the barest hint of a smile. "tanis ii is a black mark on the tanis system of PLANETS. but what that governing body doesn't know," the business man leaned forward and dropped his voice, "is that it was taken over by pirates and smugglers. since it rarely gets visitors. scum of the EARTH have taken up residence."
damien leaned back and polished off his drink. before bellia could REFILL his glass, the raven-haired man waved his fingers. "i've found them useful on occasion. there is a small settlement of colonists that live there and are MOSTLY left alone. they, with the pirates, have a no interference policy."
brassy notes twisted into something more chill. BODIES pressed in from all sides, flocking to the multi-colored, pulsating dance floor. hazel hues watched the lights flicker, casting damien's face in shadows.
"did you hear anything on the streets today? and rumblings across rowis?"
“what? squid-eel?” ophelia frowned as she looked at the bag, then back up to mara. “that is not what the seller at the market said it was. i’d complained i got scammed, but i still think it’s cool.” she shrugged, slinging it back over her shoulder. “eats a man and causes lightning storms? i’d rather believe that than the story this guy sold me.”
“botany bay was where you grew up though? that’s pretty impressive actually. did you grow up on the water and all then?”
mara giggled again, nodding. soft strands of SIKLY hair swayed with the action. her fingers reached up to tucker a few sections BEHIND her ear. "king squid-eel. i think there's a more native name but it's eroded into squid-eel over time. i think those original settlers of botany bay grew TIRED of naming all the new stuff they saw and just fell back to simple EARTH TERMS." the woman shrugged. way before her time.
"well, guessing from the quality, i'd say you went to one of the tourist markets here on rowis. there's a small city that...is not like the rest." something mara had GLEENED about mr. cayne was that he liked opulence. most found that on rowis. HOWEVER, to carter to the everyman, there were a few cities on the OTHERSIDE of the world that were more...dingy. that's how she'd describe it. she wouldn't be surprised if tourist markets were starting to INFULTRATE the rich side of town, though.
mara shook her head. "no, i preferred the land. but i enjoyed my father's stories. he had SO MANY! the squid-eel was always my favorite. favorite part about coming home from school."
head tilted. "what about you? where'd you grow up? did you live on a ship? an asteroid? how'd you come to rowis?"
no one at arah assassins know exactly who damien cayne is. the front he puts on to his EMPLOYEES is a level headed businessman who is extremely rich. while damien still owns the family repair business, it's run by a business partner. galen foxwell. galen knows NOTHING of daimen's exploits, simply thinking the owner is off spending his money and LIVING life like the rest of the rich in the galaxy.
no one at AA know where damien's wealth came from nor that he GOT HIS START in the mining and engineering industries. he's a fair boss who pays well and makes sure his employees are safe.
"where do i even start?" phara laughed, head tipped back. deep, reaspy voice echoed THROUGH the air before she settled down. "i'm many things, red. DANGEROUS being at the forefront." shoulders shrugged as phara propped her combat boots onto the glass table. damine would have a FIT if he saw her now. hopefully mara WOULDN'T tell. phara wasn't sure what to make of the girl. mousey, quiet little thing. but much like the former Walking Lazarus participant, there was something DIFFERENT about damien's secretary.
"i'm good with information and...hacking into networks and mainframes. can pluck information just like that," the brunette snapped her fingers. no one BELIEVED phara when she spoke of such things. Walking Lazarus was nothing but rumors, DESTROYED by the intergalactic authorities. much like SHE should have been.
"want me to keep going?"

his hand reached out before artis could think BETTER of it. there was no sense getting involved with the red head. the fact he'd MAINTAINED decent relationships with the others and arah's was a miracle. but ophelia was about to go off and be STUPID.
"don't," he said lowly. fingers curled around her arm. "i know the type. nothing but TROUBLE. it's not worth it, okay?"

low, brassy notes pulsed through the air of black siren. one of the local night clubs on rowis. damien was a FREQUENT visitor, friendly with the staff. he, a loyal customer and them, silent informants.
lips curled around the blue crystal, knocking back the rest of his drink. before his glass EVEN HIT THE TABLE, bellia was filling his drink once more. damine offered a nod.
"some would say you were smart. most people who go to tanis ii end up dead." hazel hues drifted over to his companion. "many saw it as a failure after the success of tanis prime. but ii has VALUABLE resources. if you have the GUTS to live there, you'll succeed."

her lips twitched, slowly falling into a more neutral line. mara knew, without a SHADOW of a doubt, the printed sea creature on the woman's bag was NATIVE to botany bay.
"i'm pretty sure i'm not. father was a fisherman. i'd recognize the king squid-eel if i saw it." mara's smile returned for a moment. "sailors would tell ghosts stories about squid-eel sightings. RUMORED to eat a man whole and CREATE lightning storms under the water." laughter split her lips, the sound airy and secret. "but sure, if you want to BELIEVE," her hand waved. "whatever it is you believe, fine."
