I’m a terrible procrastinator and missed Ignoct Writer’s Weekend and most of Aranea Appreciation week. So enjoy the thing I wrote in last 20 minutes because I love my Highwind girl.

Word count: 256

Why did she join the army? The short answer was that they paid more. There were big scores to make as a mercenary, but job security was something to be desired. Even once she made a name for herself, Aranea had far too often taken on low paying hunts because there wasn’t much else to come by at the time. Peace and security, for all their praises didn’t pay that much and you couldn’t make a demon show up if it didn’t want to.

When the offer came up, Aranea laughed. She didn’t give a damn about patriotism. Niflheim to her was little more than pomp and circumstances. Empire meant nothing when the people she saw couldn’t defend their homes at night. Aranea made her living off it, but she could also recognize that the emperor didn’t care if any of his people lived or died for the empire or in the outskirts to some demons. She never saw herself as soldier, even when she finally decided to take up the offer. Back then she was naïve enough to think she could keep herself separate from the evils the empire committed.

Why did she leave? Because of the demons. She realized the irony of it later, when she was drinking away the sight of humans being turned into demons. When she realized the things she used to hunt and the soldiers she was meant to fight beside were the same. They were born without a choice, and neither did she see so long as she stayed.
