The typography fun continues with test printing our prototype font pieces made using a laser cutter #typography #designlife #letterpress
This is a shot I took of our test run of our laser cut stamp. We went in with just the type itself (converted to outlines) in a few formats and were then shown how to create the stamp effect with the laser cutter. This involved created an area of rastering around the type itself and then cutting out this raster. We did consider getting the letters cut out and then gluing them onto another piece of mdf to create a deeper stamp, but discussion with the lab staff indicated that some of the thinner lines may not work with the cutter, even if we made the whole piece bigger.
We were also encouraged to raster as little as possible around the letters to save time. We found that the laser cutter’s speed had to be reduced significantly to allow it to cut as deeply as we needed and that multiple runs over the raster would get it deeper each time. Then we just needed a coat of clear acrylic spray to get the stamp sealed so it wouldn't absorb the paint/ink. We didn’t have our type reversed for the practice run but we will have a properly sized, reversed version that already has the raster area drawn for the real stamp. We are planning on doing multiple runs to get as much depth as possible.
It seems that the stamp pads didn’t work too well and couldn’t get enough ink onto the letters to make a consistent print but applying the paint directly to the letters with a brush got a nice consistent coat and the letters printed well. Now we just need to do the marbling and get the stamp printed and on it!
