She didn’t recognize her voice, but she knew a woman was speaking her name. It was soft and it stuttered a moment. Immediately she set down the ultrasound pictures and looked up at Ingrid to force a smile. “I must have a reputation by now? Then again, I am the shortest person in town. You’d think I’d be used to this by now.” She gestured to the empty seat in front of her. “It’s nice to meet you Ingrid. I guess you must know my husband. Unless…have I taught someone in your family? Forgive me, it’s been three years since I’ve taught kindergarten. I’m pregnant again, so my body’s getting back in the habit of the first trimester again. I’m a bit cranky and out of sorts.” She had to admit, it was nice to come to Granny’s to think. With a new nanny around, she had those precious moments to herself while Nana led a pack of raging toddlers around the house and playground. She slid the ultrasound picture off to the right and settled into the booth, seeming exhausted. “I didn’t realize it was the lunch hour.”

“Oh, no.” She really didn't know much about Cherise apart form a few details. “My sister works at the pub, The Bent Elbow that your father owns. That's what Greg told me. I knew it was you from the way he described you. I never thought or I just.” She stammered knwoing she had stepped in it. Of course she would. She was a wallflower, a shy awkward librarian who was still working out her own set of claws. But this was tought trying to reach out to people when so often she had been used.

She shook her head, “I don't..know your husband. Though I think my sister would benefit from seeing him once in a while. God, if she heard me she'd be angry. Okay, let me do this over. I am bothering you. I'm just Greg's friend. He talks a lot about you. I just wanted to get – right still bothering.” She was running out of thinsg to say. “My friend is having  a baby too...again wrong thing to day. I'm sorry I'm bothering you.”

Victor nodded, “More mythology based I guess. He wants to learn as much as he can about mermaids.” he couldn’t tell her why exactly without sounding crazy. His hands moved behind his back as he followed behind her. “You don’t remember me do you, Ingrid?”

He sighed, “Oh, so that’s gotten around has it?” Victor wasn’t sure how he felt. The man that Ariel was married to is a monster. He wasn’t happy about it. “I’d be better if she was safe. I haven’t heard good things about her new husband. All I’ve ever wanted for her is to be happy, even if it’s not with me. Which it isn’t. It’s not going to be—–” he didn’t want to talk about something that only made him feel more guilty and instead pressed onto something else. “I remember a few months back you laughed in my face, I’m not sure if that’s escaped your memory. Maybe, I was hoping that in coming here—you know what? Maybe I should just stick to the books.”

She thought he was a good man to want nothing but his ex wife's happiness. Ingrid was thrown off by the next set of words that had followed. “I laughed in your face?” She remembered the day vaguely, “Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry. What did you say? No, really I'm sorry.” Ingrid furrowed her brows and realized why that was. “You asked me out. I thought you were joking.” She wasn't like her sister, the raven haired beauty that broke hearts left and right. Ingrid was the shy librian that hid in her bookd and mostly wanted to be left alone. Only Freya knew that that wasn't true. She just really thought that no one could genuinely like her, romantically.

Ingrid picked up a few books to help Dr. Whale with what he needed, she skimmed through. “You might need to explain a few things to your son about these though. How old is he again?”

The former wingless fairy sat in Granny’s diner and stared at the picture in front of her. There it was, the ultrasound. This was it, then. She and Archie were going to make the child feel welcomed and as if there were a place in the world for them. There were no mistakes, just coincidences. No matter how much Cherise tried to tell herself that this terrible event was going to lead to something beautiful and wonderful, she was having a hard time accepting it. Even though the tiny being on the ultrasound most certainly looked like a baby now, Cherise couldn’t bring herself to believe it. A baby. That was her baby and this was a baby not related to her husband. They didn’t make that baby. The baby growing inside of her was from a terrible night that left a man dead and herself still reeling from the fallout. Your baby is now about the size of a kumquat. That’s what her old pregnancy book said. She still had it from the triplets. Three kumquats had been stuffed into her body and one was even hiding behind an organ. This baby was simply content to be seen. Yet Cherise felt no joy looking at the picture. She didn’t feel happy like she had in the past. She didn’t immediately cry tears of joy. She felt indifferent. She felt cold and strange. Maybe it wasn’t a baby. Maybe it was some sort of parasite. Maybe it was some sort of fairy worm that fed on insides and needed special magic to be removed… Maybe all she needed was Mother Superior to see her and- It was a baby. She had made a conscious choice to try to make something out of this. Her husband had promised his support, as he always had given her. With a dejected sigh, Cherise lifted up the picture and held it to the light. Someone had written “Baby’s First Picture!” in an excited hand. If only she could have felt like the person who had written in. Truth be told, she was dreading her due date.

Ingrid stepped out of the library, as her lunch hour had hit. She wasn't in the mood to head to the Bent Elbow and see her sister serve up the usual round of drinks. Though she easily could have gone there. She was in the mood for a more restricted clientele. One where they weren't trying to get drunk just yet. She made her way to Granny's. Her head low; she was still that every shy librarian that most people didn't know. The few things anyone did know was that her mother had been brought up on murder charges, but that charges were dropped. And that she was well versed in the history of certain places that were drenched in stories about early witchcraft in the new colonies.

She ordered a grilled cheese, something simple that she had planned to take back to the library in order to keep at her research. First rule about witch club as her aunt had put it, don't talk about witch club. Ingrid waited there for her order and saw someone, not anyone she met but someone she had heard about from Dr. Whale. Ingrid pursed her lips and made her way there in order to say hello. She stopped right in front then noticed the woman concentrated on something in her hands. Immediately she thought this was a bad idea. “Umm...hello, you must be Cher-Cherise Hopper....I'm Ingrid Beauchamp...Are you okay?”

He waited patiently for her attention, though the way his fingers tapped against the counter proved otherwise. Victor grit his teeth an began to tense his jaw as he waited for a few more seconds. “I think that was rather obvious, don’t you?” He took a deep breath in, trying as best as he could not to go off. That habit had lead to him really having a scarcity of friends. “I’m sorry, let me try this again. Can you help me, I’m trying to find any sort of book about mermaid lore and even fairy lore, for my son.”

“Yeah, not many people come by with just the excitement of getting to know me.” She replied with equal vigor. Her lips twisted, ready to pounce. Few times some people were less than generous with her and having been used Ingrid developed her own set of fangs. “A son...oh!” She shook her head shaking the irritation. He was father looking for the perfect book for his and she was the woman who was being no help at all. It was for his son. “I'm sorry, yes please let me start over. Ummm...” Ingrid nodded and escaped from behind the counter.

“All the mythology based things are over here,” She led him towards the exact shelf, “If you want fairy tales, then that would be a different shelf. Depends on what you're looking for, Dr. Whale.” She took in a deep breath, “I'm sorry to hear about, her...” It hadn't escaped anyone's ears that the former Mrs. Whale had been married, again. “How are you?”
