finally reading Wheel of Wrath and I really like Himalia

Huge fan of the tonal whiplash between each pov character in Wheel of Wrath. Himalia is primarily doing her own science thing and her internal conflict is relatively tame, which would theoretically make her the least interesting, but in practice I'm as curious about the mysterious orange particle as she is. Meizan is also very level, but he's very intertwined with Aranel, who is a bomb. Aina is full of grief and rage and existential depression and coping with it by getting high and talking to very unusual people and there's an Evil Substance in her that makes her thing horrible things and where I'm at in the book she's visiting actual Hell. And then Aranel's path can be neatly divided into sections where he's fucked up in different ways

Meizan lost basically everything he cared about and all reason to not cheat his way into the upper realms using the megarya blood he had in his hands, and then barely even considered it before throwing it away. That's a more ethical choice than certain Paramosi have made. King you are ascending to Mayana the old fashioned way and that's without Sherka's ambient chitrons to give a little tug in the right direction

Narakh actually got less gross for me when I found out it was entirely the inside of Andraken. Horrible hell world where the walls pulsate and everything is squishy and slimy and there's an evil wind that makes you vomit? Wow, that's utterly disgusting. What I like about Himalia is she combines the socially inept genius researcher archetype with the kind and compassionate animal lover archetype. A lot of fictional ecologists don’t get that balance of passion right

Oooo @marielaure, you bring up such a good point. Because I don't think I fully clocked that she wasn't mentioned even once, like not even as a passing thought in Himalia's head.

I never thought about this before but now it's gonna be what I'm thinking about all tonight.

Because I believe with all the others, they mention their parents in one way or another (like how Aina doesn't know her dad) but even in Himalia's mom passed, you think it'd get brought up somehow by her, her dad, or a servant even.

Now I'm wondering if it's intentionally missing and there's a reason...because that seems likely.

Have any theories?? ^_^

My most plausible theory is that Himalia and Mirya are half siblings instead of…cousins? Himalia mentioned Mirya’s parents as ‘Uncle and Auntie’ so I assumed Mirya and Himalia were betrothed cousins the entire book.

Or maybe Himalia & Mirya are siblings but Himalia was raised by Athanken?

Something along those lines. The whole Mayana royalty stuff with Himalia and Mirya is so weird…I think if they ended up being secret siblings it would be an easy way for Himalia to do away with the monarchy/betrothal she does not want.

Also, in an early draft of Spin of Fate, there was a secret sibling plot line (Aina and Himalia were at one point half siblings with their mom being Kanna). So maybe the remnants of that idea were put into Himalia / Mirya.

uncle and aunty is a really common thing in asian cultures (i am also from se asia) to call ur friends parents so im not sure it means they are related tho they are kinda like siblings?? idk

i still think zenyra could be her mom bcuz zen had a lover thats mentioned, also they both have dark skin. and i checked wow and it says himalia's mom is from amaratir.............. and guess who is also from amaratir in the flashback??? plus they are both into experiments so idk wdyt??

also WHAT i did not know aina and himalia were gonna be sisters why do i love that plot point i now need a fanfic of it

@arazan-universe where’d it say that Himalia’s mom is from Amaratir? I totally missed that 😄 (or if you remember what was happening in the scene so I can look for it). I love the theory that Zenyra is potentially Himalia’s mom. Also, there’s the part where Himalia is leading the meeting and Zenyra seems really proud in specifically Himalia finding out the six beast thing…

In the fanart you guys have seen with Aranel pressing his forehead to a very sad Meizan I was attempting to do some seitarius imagery in their designs. Aranel once described Meizan as seeming like a “lone wolf” and we see Meizan be very interested in healing, so I attempted to make Meizan’s hair resemble a wolf design. With Aranel, Meizan once described him as being “as fierce as a nagamor” so I always make Aranel’s hair a bit more slicked back and in the art he’s a bit taller and curving over Meizan, sort of like the slickness of a nagamor. I don’t know if I succeeded but that is what I had in mind. So, the still with Azyaka behind Aranel and Sherka behind Meizan made me really happy.
