you keep a measured pace through the crowded thoroughfare, your cane guiding you past the stalls while your mind sharpens on the words you need to say. you keep your voice low, ensuring no wandering ears can catch a single scrap of gossip. "i know that as you grew up, you probably felt as though lyanna was the only person on your side," you begin, your tone muted. "you had a reason to feel that way. and for that, i am sorry, steffon. i see now that i failed you both. i tried to mend things quietly, in my own way, but it didn't work. everything keeps fracturing, and i'm realizing i can't fix any of it if i keep excluding you. i can't change what's behind us, but i want to change what's ahead." you pause, looking back at the servants stacked high with parcels, your eyes lingering on the new harp. even though the flute is beautiful, you've always harbored a deep fondness for the sound of the harp. those rare, quiet days when the melody would drift into your office from somewhere distant in the eyrie brought you a peace nothing else could; knowing they were there, well, and playing something so sweet. they are a wild thing, but they deserve the indulgence. turning back to them, your expression drops into a profound, heavy seriousness. "i know of the secret you kept for her. of oldtown."

you give them no room to dodge, your eyes anchoring theirs. you purse your lips, waving a quiet finger. "she told me, at last. and trust, i will not leave it unavenged. but it's hard for me to..." your breath hitches. "to wrap my head around... the fact that... our lord father probably knew." you feel a sudden heat seize your cheeks as thought the embarrassment falls on your shoulder, too. as if it is your tally, and your tally alone, to pay up. "i know i hold myself apart from you both. i forget to… talk. i never really knew how to talk to you, in truth. you were always so much younger. so different than i, i..." a sharp swallow cuts your throat, a flash of irritation crossing your features at your own clumsy words. "but no one is touching a hair on your head while i draw breath! you are all i have left. you and lyanna drive me insane, yes… but you're mine. and i find... i find i need you just as much as i need amahle." you look down at the dirt path, your jaw tightening, before murmuring quietly, "and i hate that i'm the last to know. i should have known. i didn't, and it troubles me in ways i can't even talk about."

for   the   most   part,   they   were   enthralled   by   their   new   gifts.   steffon’s   eyes   were   trained   on   the   flute   —   all   its   dazzling,   carved   edges   —   and,   as   amaya   first   began   to   speak   again,   he   assumed   it   must   have   been   the   wind   or   perhaps   birds   chirping   overhead.   when   she   continued   they   turned   quizzically   toward   her,   head   tilting   on   its   axis,   staring   with   wide   eyes   and   the   slight   off putting   intensity   that   often   came   hand   in   hand   with   the   arryn   twins.   soon   they   would   be   back   home,   he   hoped   ;   their   keep   overlooking   the   winding   rivers   that   looked   like   veins   at   such   a   distance,   their   hallways   filled   with   the   plucking   of   his   deft   fingers   against   harpstrings.   maybe   they   were   not   so   useless.   not   always.   words   played   upon   their   lips,   but   they   were   far   more   difficult   than   melodies   and   notes   in   a   song.   words   —   those   stupid,   slippery   things   —   caught   in   steffon’s   throat   all   too   easily,   tangled   themselves   and   emerged   from   his   lips   muddled.   and   then   she   spoke   of   lyanna,   and   his   body   slumped   as   though   his   puppet   strings   had   been   cut.   “it   was   not   …   it   was   not   a   secret.   she   told   me   not   to   tell.   i   never   told.”   a   simple   request,   a   monochromatic   instruction.   they   swallowed   hard   and   fidgeted   like   an animal wanting to run.

she   was   right,   but   not   entirely.   the   children   were   much   different   in   some   ways   —   in   how   the   twins   were   rugged,   rough   around   the   edges,   feral   as   though   they   had   been   plucked   from   the   underbrush   —   but   in   certain   lights,   they   were   identical.   steffon   shared   the   same   pointed   nose,   the   same   sharp   jaw   as   his   eldest   sister   ;   there   was   the   same   glint   in   their   eyes   too,   of   a   burning   need   for   retribution   no   matter   which   shape   it   took.   since   hearing   of   lyanna’s   husband,   of   his   wicked   ways,   he   saw   the   man   in   every   hightower   that   passed.   like   a   small   dog   shrieking   at   larger   predators,   he   had   watched   from   afar   and   planned   their   downfall   time   and   time   again   since   they   showed   their   faces   in   king’s   landing.   “it   is   why   i   hate   the   hightowers   so   much.   why   i   would   fight   them   with   my   own   teeth   and   nails   if   i   had   to.   when   they   arrived   …   i   could   have   killed   them,   amaya,   i   swear   it.”   such   a   lithe   and   spidery   thing.   the   youngest   arryn   would   not   have   posed   even   half   a   threat.   “i   did   not   keep   it   from   you   to   spite   you.   i   was   simply   following   my   instruction.”   then,   he   let   out   a   little   sound.   it   was   almost   a   squeak,   something   of   distress   and   worry.   “we   need   you   too.   i   don’t   know   why   i   am   the   way   that   i   am,   and   i   am   sorry   that   i   am   not   the   boy   mother   and   father   always   dreamed   of.   i   am   hardly   a   boy   at   all.”

your mismatched eyes close a moment, the dull ache behind your brow pulsing in time with the crackle of the hearth. it is one thing to endure your own starvation, to let your body wither under the the poppy fog and the phantom memories of the blackwater. it is a different thing entirely to witness the people you love failing to sustain themselves. abandoning all semblance of princely composure, you rise unsteadily to your feet. you grip the heavy carved wood of your chair and drag it across the stone floor, the sudden, sharp screech of the legs cutting violently through the heavy silence of the room until you are pressed right against her side. you sink into the seat, immediately burying yourself in your sister's space. your arms wrap around alysanne's waist, fingers clawing into the fabric of her gown as you press your forehead deep into the hollow of her shoulder, holding her as though your grip was the one thing left to keep the world from tearing all which you love apart.

"can you promise me you'll never die?" you murmur against her skin, your voice dropping to a fragile, broken whimper. you pull your head back just enough to look up into her face, your nose wrinkling as a small, quiet sniffle escapes you. "please? i only have you, and vis, and mum left. i don't think i can lose anyone else. i really can't." the red maw vanishes into smoke, leaving only a terrified girl as you lift your hand between you, extending your small pinky finger with a desperate, childish gravity. "can you swear to me? can you swear that you won't leave me all alone?"

the   heads   of   the   targaryen   brood   had   always   been   tethered   to   the   same   body.   perhaps   that   was   why   their   ache   was   so   great,   as   it   was   the   ache   of   them   all   ;   hira’s   grief,   viserra’s   injury,   maekara’s   crushing   responsibility,   alysanne’s   brokenness.   in   their   youth   there   had   been   moments   where   they   drifted,   where   disagreements   were   planted   and   words   were   thrown   like   arrows,   but   in   their   darkest   moment   there   was   nowhere   else   for   alysanne   than   in   the   warm   embrace   of   her   sisters.   “if   only   i   were   able   to   offer   you   such   promises,   maekara   …   ”   whispered   the   princess.   only   a   few   weeks   before   she   had   been   afflicted   by   the   rampaging   poison,   had   wondered   if   the   sickness   would   be   here   undoing.   recovery   had   been   a   blessing   but,   if   such   a   miracle   had   been   granted   in   sacrifice   of   their   mother,   alysanne   did   not   want   it.   in   spite   of   her   words,   alysanne’s   finger   linked   with   hers.   “i   swear   that   i   will   try,   and   i   swear   that   i   will   not   be   out   of   your   sight.   not   until   mother   returns.   i   have   traced   the   battlements   so   many   times   that   my   feet   ache.”

alysanne   would   not   give   promises   she   couldn’t   keep.   not   anymore.   she   would   not   promise   her   immortality,   not   promise   her   happiness,   not   promise   that   this   insanity   between   her   and   willas   would   amount   to   anything   other   than   hatred   …   but   she   would   try.   she   enclosed   maekara’s   hand   with   the   rest   of   her   fingers   and   squeezed,   amethyst   eyes   staring   into   her   unmatched   ones.   “and   if   i   do   leave   you   in   body,   i   will   not   leave   you   in   spirit.   i   will   follow   you   forever,   my   sister.   you   are   never   to   be   rid   of   me.”   in   that   hall,   in   the   dark   shroud   of   longing,   alysanne   could   make   one   promise.   it   was   that   maekara   would   forever   carry   her   younger   sister   with   her,   through   loss   and   through   victory.

trystane  had  no  idea  where  his  family  was  but  he  rushed  around,  a  hand  pressed  onto  his  forehead.  he  knew  he  was  bleeding  but  he  didn't  care  ...  he  had  to  find  his  family.  he  groaned  as  he  glanced  around,  trying  to  make  his  way  towards  a  group  of  other  smallfolk.  he  didn't  even  realize  his  father  had  noticed  him,  it  all  happened  so  fast.  one  moment  he  was  alone  being  ushered  into  the  sick  bay,  the  next  he  was  being  embraced.  trystane  let  out  a  sob  and  collaped  into  his  arms.  "father  ...  i  thought  ...  i  couldn't  find  you  and  i  saw  the  dragons  ...  all  i  saw  was  fire."  he  muttered  against  his  fathers  chest. he  pulled  away,  his  head  still  dripping.  "are  you  alright?  did  they  treat  you?"  he  asked  in  a  concerned  tone.  "where  is  jeyne?  tanselle  and  elyas?  did  something  happen  to  them?"  he  rushed  out.  "i  tried  to..."  he  paused  and  shook  his  head.  "i'm  sorry,  father."

in   his   arms,   he   was   the   same   little   boy   that   they   had   brought   into   the   world   five   and   twenty   years   ago.   edmure   held   him   and   remembered   when   trystane   had   fit   snugly   between   his   palm   and   elbow,   cradling   his   head   in   one   hand,   dancing   through   their   chambers   with   allyria’s   delirious   laughter   singing   through   the   room.   their   children   may   have   grown,   may   have   squared - off   and   matured,   but   trystane   was   still   edmure’s   baby.   when   he   rested   his   lips   against   his   son’s   skin,   love   threatened   to   burst   right   through   the   cage   of   his   ribs.   “your   head.”   it   was   not   a   question.   it   was   not   an   urge.   it   was   a   father   seeing   a   grazed   knee,   an   arm   at   the   wrong   angle   ;   care   alongside   action.   “let   us   stop   the   bleeding,   come   on   now.   sit   beside   me.”

they   lowered   to   the   nearest   seat.   edmure   attempted   to   gesture   with   his   sword   hand,   cursed   at   its   uselessness,   waved   his   left   towards   one   of   the   maesters   to   bring   him   a   wet   cloth.   gently   he   daubed   at   trystane’s   forehead,   wicking   the   blood   away.   “jeyne   has   had   a   bump   to   the   head.   they   are   fine,   but   some   memories   have   left.   we   will   remind   her.”   he   swallowed   away   the   grief,   focused   on   care.   “tanselle   and   elyas   had   been   hiding.   they   are   well,   just   dirtied.   your   mother   is   unscathed,   and   the   babe   is   unhurt.”   and   edmure   ?   he   hesitated.   “do   not   apologise,   sweet   thing.   you   are   not   at   fault.   i   will   heal   up.   the   dragon   swiped   me   and   knocked   my   shoulder   out   of   place.   it   has   made   my   arm   ineffectual.”

they nod in agreement. those who were still young-blooded in their fighting might not observe that such small aches and pains are signs of remaining strength. if mor had started viewing them as weaknesses the moment they began, they would wither into a nothingness from which they could not recover. and already they dwindled too close to that edge in the distant years, a place they couldn't afford to revisit. so they would be hobbling, so they had no trophy — what gain would that have in the end regardless? a swig of their ale follows edmure's and they share this in a toast. "this is all rumour," a preface. "but i believe it firstly involves always using real weapons. if there are cuts given, unless they are threatening, they do not stop their training. even small acts give bolster to their endurance." if it was true — and they wouldn't know, for they had never been to the north, and would not pervade the rumours about the houses, but still. it makes one wonder. "secondly ... well, we know what reputation the dreadfort has, i suppose." a grimace knowingly over the side of the vale. now those things were proven by those who came and went, and those who didn't.

such   ferocity,   such   violence,   was   foreign   to   edmure.   training   to   be   a   knight   was   weighted   by   his   spoken   oaths,   not   merely   the   ability   to   cut   a   man   down   before   they   were   able   to   strike.   he   could   not   imagine   sparring   with   jeyne,   or   trystane,   or   desmera   as   though   they   were   upon   the   battlefield,   drawing   blood   and   continuing   to   push   forth   until   shallow   victory   was   achieved.   “i   must   say,   i   prefer   the   way   we   do   things   down   amongst   the   trees.   i   taught   my   children,   my   younger   sisters,   to   fight   as   i   had   learned.   they   must   remember   what   they   are   fighting   for,   and   that   reason   should   never   be   to   simply   maim.”  they   would   sleep   well   tonight,   he   thought,   with   alcohol   soothing   their   worries,   their   bodies   forced   to   the   point   of   exhaustion.   allyria   would   no   doubt   be   tending   to   his   bruises   and   scrapes,   clicking   tongue   against   teeth   to   remind   her   husband   of   her   disdain.  it   was   the   same   motion   edmure   made   at   mention   of   the   dreadfort.   the   fossoways   —   or,   at   the   very   least,   those   that   were   not   the   ruling   lord   —   tended   to   stay   much   away   from   the   rumor   mill.   so   long   as   his   family   were   safe,   others   could   indulge   in   their   own   beliefs   …  however   odd.  “the   houses   of   the   north   leave   me   baffled.   i   just   hope   they   keep   their   distance   from   us   fossoways if that is how they choose to act.”

what would his life had been like, if he had not known his father? what would he be doing? surely, he would not be sparring with a princess in the training yards of king's landing. perhaps he never would have wielded a sword at all. he might have been a writer. he might have been a father already. a husband. these are the sorts of things he styles himself as in his daydreams. still, he feels a certain melancholy for alysanne. " what are your mothers like? " he wonders aloud. he knew little of the princess of dragonstone and her wife. he knew less of alysanne herself — but there must be a starting point to every conversation. looking down upon her, sword near comically large in her grip, willas finds himself wishing to smile. he does not, nodding his thanks at the strange compliment proffered. if there was one thing willas excelled in, it was humility. he parries her first strike with relative ease, but he owes this only to his size advantage. she is strong, despite being small. the peal of her laugh forces from his chest laughter of his own, nervous and quiet, unsure if she has given him permission to join her in her amusement.

what   a   strange   creature,   a   beast   on   unsteady   legs.   it   was   like   willas   had   only   been   born   the   eve   before,   and   was   stumbling   like   a   foal   in   the   stable   for   his   mother   to   return.   perhaps   that   was   exactly   what   he   was.   there,   in   the   training   grounds,   as   she   twirled   and   swung   her   blade,   they   were   not   knight   and   princess   —   they   were   simply   opponents   rallying   toward   a   victory.   if   death   was   the   greatest   equalizer,   it   was   battle   that   nipped   at   its   heels   ;   an   unfamiliar   sensation   bloomed within   alysanne   that   she   had   not   yet   connected   to   enjoyment.   “my   mothers   ?   ”   swing,   hiss.   “they   are   the   greatest   women   i   have   ever   known.   delfina   is   fiesty,   firey   —   the   dragon   of   her   namesake.”   thwack,   ring.   “and   hira   is   the   voice   of   all   reason,   a   woman   who   has   no   end   to   her   decorum   and   grace.   together,   they   are   formidable.”   and   they would   make   the   strongest   rulers   the   realm   had   ever   seen.   the   princess   had   no   doubt   that   they   would   sit   upon   the   iron   throne   with   dignity   and   propriety.   it   was   simply   a   waiting   game,   now,   until   they   were   handed   what   was   rightfully   theirs.   bodies   side - stepped   around   one   another,   a   dance,   and   alysanne   raised   the   sword   to   near   graze   willas’s   cheek.   what   was   left   was   the   a hairline   slither   of   red.   a   glistening,   a   kiss.

" of course . . . " desmera begins, words trailing off like the last bit of wine poured from a flagon. her silence stretches, her gaze falling from her brother's in favour of his bedlinens. she picks at the embroidery found there, red threads spurting from the fabric like blood. " of course, i will not be a fossoway much longer. " she begins again, and forges all the way through this time. eyes darting back to edmure, desmera studies his aging face for signs that he had known anything of their father's plan to promise her hand to the ruling lord reyne. she finds there only a melancholy, tender feeling. her brother was getting older, no longer the young knight he had been in her own youth. in the moment, he is so mortal to her —  unblessed as he was by pantera, this life would be the only one he was afforded. desmera finds herself feeling mournful. " father has promised my hand to lord myles reyne. i know not what for. and my mother says she knew nothing of it. she is like to pluck out his eyes when she returns with rosalei. "

a   gentle   sigh.   it   held   no   weight,   no   disappointment,   no   anguish.   only   understanding.   edmure   had   never   once   doubted   that   his   father   was   scheming   behind   closed   doors,   was   making   arrangements   to   offer   desmera’s   hand   before   long.   she   was   a   beautiful   thing,   kind   and   plucky   and   self-assured   ;   pride   hardly   touched   the   warmth   that   filled   his   chest   at   the   thought   of   his   sister.   he   simply   wished   that   it   was   him   that   made   such   decisions.   “you   will   forever   be   a   fossoway.   cider   runs   through   your   veins,”   light   hit   his   eyes,   crinkling   in   the   corners,   “are   you   happy ?   is   he   kind   to   you ? ”   remembering   the   seedlings   of   his   own   marriage,   it   had   not   been   love   immediately.   edmure   and   allyria   had   watched   as   affections   germinated,   sprouted,   and   finally   bloomed   —   if   miles   and   desmera   could   find   even   a   fraction   of   that   connection,   her   older   brother   would   be   relieved.   “our   father   likes   to   move   in   the   shadows.   i   have   learned   this   of   him.   if   you   are   needing   me   to   speak   with   him   …   ”   lorence   was   not   an   easy   man   to   approach,   even   less   to   counter.   once   edmure   had   been   fearful   of   him.   now,   he   did   not   hesitate   to   speak   his   mind.   “i   suppose,   soon,   it   will   be   time   to   consider   a   partnership   for   trystane.”

the waters continues the ruse until the liege has a chance to escape. he is a slippery thing, the swipe of their palm almost experienced in taliesin's book, and he uses the boisterous laugh which spills to his advantage, laughing in the face of the seller who insists this is a foolish insult. upon a few moments later, they back away, in a blaze of raised hands, and saunter down from the stall in question, shaking his head. oh, how this reminds them of simpler times. of times when no name was claimed in the first place, when nobility was shirked for the sake of rebellion, and now how this word, it carries such a weight behind it, dragging a cart filled with items, and those items are merely doomed to be discarded. taliesin's gaze remains shrewed upon the surroundings and searching through the market for the vanished sand in the wind, now uncovering a familiar skulk along the side where tents disguised most faces. taliesin ducks within and smirks. "i would say that was rather successful, wouldn't you?" they lift up their own hand and open the palm. they too have swiped something: a gold elephant. it seems a promise or a whisper of a future. "more gold buys more things, and yet we shall never pay above the appropriate fee as we see fit."

upon   their   discovery,   steffon   gave   a   sound   akin   to   a   squawk.   their   palms   clapped   together,   and   he   presented   their   wares   like   treasure   in   their   splayed   palm.   “a   dastardly   duo ! ”   snorted   the   falcon   and,   for   a   moment,   they   saw   themself   as   a   much   younger   boy   —   such   juvenile   antics   had   been   commonplace   between   him   and   his   twin   sister,   but   gone   were   those   days.   obligation   and   marriage   of   all   things   had   torn   apart   two   halves   of   a   whole,   and   they   were   still   working   on   stitching   themselves   back   together   again.   “for   a   moment,   i   did   not   think   we   would   do   it.   that   was   exhilarating.   my   heart   is   racing   like   stallion.”   they   supposed   it   was   another   hidden   skill,   one   that   they   had   never   appreciated   ;   the   ability   to   disappear,   to   become   insignificant   in   an   instant.   perhaps   it   would   be   more   useful   in   the   wake   of   the   kingsmoot   where   whispers   were   worth   their   weight   in   gold.   a   magpie   catching   a   flicker   of   light,   steffon   inched   closer   and  ooh’d   at   the   acquisition.   “it   is   almost   too   pretty,   do   you   agree ?   i   bet   lyanna   would   love   something   like   that.”   the   children   that   had   so   often   played   in   the   dirt,   in   the   shallows   of   the   eyrie.   although   they   were   legitimate   the   two   had   always   felt   divorced   from   the   family,   steffon   a   spare   and   useless   part   —   the   broken   wing,   the   shattered   beak.   he   wondered   if   the   other   had   ever   felt   the   same.   sticking   out   a   clumsy   hand,   they   proudly   proclaimed,   “i   am   steffon ! ”   no   title.   no   embellishment.   steffon,   as   though   they   did   not   have   a   second   name   at   all.

she has lost much as of late. willas himself has lost nothing beyond his siblings, long cold in their graves. they are so different, standing so vastly apart despite the mere foot of empty space between their elbows in reality. his life, for all of his father's pragmatism, had been rather charmed. in the rare moments that he was angry, he found himself angry at nothing. he would pull no punches, and feel the burn of guilt for months. he is a knight, but he is hardly more than a boy. he feels shame, standing beside her —  a beautiful, graceful thing. she knew herself well. willas found he was hardly a person. " gods willing, your friend will come home too. " there is little else he can say. he does not imagine alysanne wishing for the kind of husband who made promises that were hollow of both meaning and intention. the feeling of her fingers atop his shocks like cold water to the face. he wills himself not to stiffen, not to deny her the comfort of human touch in her grief. watching her out of the periphery of dark eyes, he flips his hand such that they are palm to palm, enclosing her hand within the bulk of his own. the modicum of support he has the ability to offer, and still he is hesitant with it. careful. he fears her pulling away. " i have lit candles for those who were lost. the gods are listening, princess. they will not turn away from you simply because they have not heard your voice for some time. it is not their way. "

perhaps   it   was   foolish,   to   reach   out   from   her   island   in   desperation   for   the   touch   of   another.   viserra   was   hurt,   maekara   swarmed   with   newfound   obligation   ;   who   else   did   alysanne   have,   that   she   had   not   pushed   away   ?   upon   their   arrival   at   king's   landing   she   had   thought   the   red   keep   her   own,   an   unfamiliar   place   visited   only   in   her   dreams   —   now   she   wondered   if   looking   upon   those   halls   would   ever   bring   a   sensation   other   than   grief.   they   had   meant   to   all   stand   there,   the   targaryens,   with   delfina   upon   the   jagged   throne   and   her   brood   flanking   her   sides.   if   she   was   not   to   return   ...   well,   what   was   stopping   alysanne   from   conceding,   from   giving   her   hand   to   a   boy   that   cared.   willas   had   his   drawbacks   (   didn't   every   man   ?   )   but   he   was   unassuming,   unthreatening,   softened   beneath   the   flimsy   exterior   of   a   knight.   a   sad   smile   twitched   at   the   corner   of   her   mouth,   and   fingers   tucked   neatly   within   his.   a   silent   embrace.   something   unspoken.   “i   wish   your   family   well,   too.   this   has   all   been   ...   i   could   have   never   imagined   such   heartbreak   would   follow   us   to   the   capital.”   and   still   it   was   only   the   beginning.   “if   the   gods   have   taken   my   mother,   maybe   they   are   not   so   benevolent   after   all.”

             it   was   clear   by   the   look   in   her   father's   eyes   that   he   didn't   mind   telling   the   story   again.   despite   his   rough   appearance   everything   about   him   seemed   to   melt   ,   both   in   talking   about   her   mother   and   herself.   even   as   jeyne   had   trouble   putting   things   together   she   could   feel   the   warmth   in   his   words   ,   the   fondness   playing   behind   his   eyes.    "i   bet   you   hated   every   second   ,"    she   replied   ,   even   though   she   knew   it   was   a   lie.   he   would   protest   vehemently   ,   no   doubt.    "there   are   a   lot   of   gaps   ,   but   most   of   them   happened   elsewhere   …   i   like   to   travel   ,   don't   i   ?   i   see   myself   on   strange   shores   but   i   can't   tell   which   belongs   where.   cider   hall   is   next   to   a   river   ,   but   these   ports   are   too   grand   to   not   be   by   the   ocean."    there   was   a   slight   shake   to   his   hand   as   he   raised   his   goblet   ,   and   jeyne   wished   she   could   help   him   further.   but   he   was   a   proud   man   ,   and   would   hate   to   be   coddled   in   such   a   way.    "tell   me   about   mother   ,   more.   i   remember   the   story   ,   but   i   love   the   way   you   tell   it."

each   movement   felt   laboured,   exhausting,   but   edmure   would   not   return   to   the   sick   bay   any   time   soon.   after   felling   a   dragon,   watching   the   beast   take   its   last   breath   at   his   feet,   laying   uselessly   in   a   bed   was   quite   the   anticlimax   ;   who   was   he   to   occupy   the   maester’s   attention,   when   he   was   merely   grazed   ?   with   allyria   carrying   their   next   child,   edmure   was   glued   to   those   that   were   already   earthside.   “i   am   much   the   homebody,   but   seeing   the   joy   on   your   faces   brought   joy   to   myself.   that   has   much   been   the   pattern   of   our   marriage   over   the   years.”   edmure’s   blue   eyes   became   unfocused,   as   if   he   was   looking   into   some   distant   and   faraway   realm.   “me   and   your   mother   …   it   wasn’t   love   at   first   sight,   but   we   grew   together   like   branches   of   trees   intertwining.   it   was   when   i   accepted   you   as   my   own   that   affection   began   to   bloom,   when   we   play - fought   in   the   fields   all   those   many   years   ago.”   a   fond   memory,   one   that   he   ached   for   jeyne   to   remember.   it   was   then   that   his   focus   returned,   lingered   on   his   daughter   in   the   hopes   she   could   recall   the   day.

"alysanne ... if you hadn't come here, i would have risen from this bed in search of you." the words rush forth before the rest, and although the exhaustion fades not with the greeting, a slight strength invigorates her arms, and she brushes her hand in a soothing motion to alysanne's back amidst the hug. presses there, offers that more silent comfort, as when she was a child and weeping from a bad dream. still she'd strive to protect her from the ghosts in the corners, even if it is men surrounding them who hold more threat than others ever could. a familial kiss is pressed to alysanne's cheekbone, a holding in glorious affection. "oh, please. since you asked me so nicely, i won't complain to have you mothering me. knowing you were waiting for me gave strength to my bones i never knew." she leans back. a wearing-off of the milk of poppy was coming upon her, and the discomfort growing, but she keeps the grimace from her features, instead inquiring. "how has he been in my absence? the hightower boy. what i need is to hear how you have come to view him. his father remains a thorn in my fucking side." and his comeuppance is long overdue.

that   was   the   mother   that   she   remembered,   a   fire   that   could   not   be   extinguished   and   a   determination   that   burned   ever   brighter.   it   was   delfina   who   had   taught   alysanne   her   resilience,   and   it   was   that   same   grit   that   had   kept   her   hoping.   giving   up   had   never   been   an   option.   she   would   have   walked   the   battlements,   gazed   between   each   and   every   embrasure,   until   she   saw   a   glimpse   of   the   woman   who   raised   her,   alive   or   dead.   it   felt   almost   strange   to   hold   her   mother   in   such   a   way,   and   yet   it   was   as   though   alysanne’s   body   knew   what   to   do   in   spite   of   her   mind.   she   held   her,   inhaled   the   briny   scent   lingering   in   her   hair,   looked   upon   the   face   she   knew   so   well   that   was   slowly   regaining   color.   in   that   moment   she   wondered   whether   there   would   ever   be   a   time   she   could   let   delfina   out   of   her   sight   again.   “it   is   easy.   you   cared   for   me   for   so   long,   without   any   question   as   to   whether   i   was   your   own.   i   am   indebted   to   you,   and   it   is   time   for   a   repayment.”   their   bodies   slowly   parted.   purple   eyes   flickered   and   rolled,   and   a   smile   peeked   through.   “he   has   been   …   surprisingly   pleasant,   mother.   has   supported   me   in   my   grief.   he   even   brought   me   a   gift.   i   think   …   ”   a   diplomatic   pause,   “   …   i   think   i   do   not   dislike   him.”

the sound of wooden stool legs on stone is a familiar din. scraping and grating and altogether an unwelcome interruption — but it is one that reminds of home. the north, this time, rather than the eyrie. feasts in the dreadfort's mess hall for four, then five, then four again, and finally three. the scent of woodsmoke hanging in the air, clinging to hair and skin even after a wash. " play, then, " he relents, swallowing thickly. his eyes remain closed, shielding him from the heart - wrenching sight of his body's lack. there is no need for caution with a guard mouse attending his bedside. " your sister shall reap the consequences, should you sound like shit. " it is a joke, forced past the lump in jacks's throat. he would never hurt lyanna. and he could likely not dole out any sort of significant consequence for some time yet.

they   were   not   the   greatest   at   discerning   truth   or   folly   and,   for   a   few   heavy   beats   following   the   words   of   his   friend,   steffon   was   unsure   whether   the   threat   was   genuine.   it   was   only   after   an   uncomfortable   silence   unfolded   that   he   guffawed,   then   clamped   both   hands   over   their   open   mouth   to   cease   the   squawk.   “i   swear,   no   consequences   shall   reach   either   sister.   i   may   be   hopeless   at   most   things,   but   the   gods   handed   me   one   talent   upon   my   birth.   i   can   assure   you   i   am   not   simply   drunk   on   grandeur.”   it   was   then   that   he   began   to   play.   it   was   a   gentle,   swelling   melody,   one   that   jacks   had   likely   heard   over   and   over   all   those   years   ago   at   the   eyrie.   steffon   would   often   pass   the   time   with   instruments   as   lyanna   was   practicing   archery,   whilst   amaya   leaned   across   maps   and   discussed   political   movement ;   a   way   to   pass   the   hours   that   did   not   require   strength   nor   intellect.   two   beady   eyes   stared   through   the   lowlight,   a   silent   judgement   that   they   were   bringing   some   sort   of   comfort   …  any  sort   of   comfort   to   a   dear   old   friend.

we fight, and keep fighting. . . together.

sounded simple enough if not for an opponent being a legendary beast like no other. a kraken in the sea was terrifying but you could escape it upon land, find a way to not be caught by its tentacles. a dragon? its wingspan and speed, sharp teeth and even sharper claws, actual dragon fire. still, what other choice was there? one less dragon to wreak havoc across westeros was one less dragon. this wasn't about glory or honor, merely doing whatever one could to protect the loved ones lost in the chaos, the innocents, the mentors and fellow warriors by their side staring down a dragon.

they inhale deep, exhaling slow to try and steady a racing heart as the noise of the fleeing crowds dulled. quick and small. grover aptly summarized, same as many old teachers have. lord akira's arrows would provide cover from a safer distance. lord edmure would need to be in arm's reach of the dragon and would be slower to react with a great sword. alright, so help cover them is their conclusion when they rush the beast.

it seemed enough of the focus had gone to the dragon's head for the vulnerable spots. the second most dangerous aspect of a dragon was the wings. dragonfire, the weapon of mass destruction. a dragon's ability for flight the vessel. a grounded dragon was a vulnerable dragon. aila focuses their strikes there, slicing through the thinner membrane, weaving and attempting to deflect sunwing's erratic swipes while she's attacked from all sides.

you are just as fierce, just as deserving a place. the knight she squired for had told her just a mere days ago when their largest worry was a silly joust. fierce as a wolverine. their braavosi teacher had taught her. the man who fears losing has already lost. Fear cuts deeper than swords. aila directs a strike in the joint where wing meets body, throwing their full weight into the attack. sunwing shrieks. it's the noise that has her turn and throw her arm up just in time to avoid the claw swipe to their neck. instead, the force of it knocks aila off their feet, winded, a sharp cry of pain as flesh splits from above the elbow to just short of their wrist. the torn fabric of their sleeve soaking blood. still, they reach for their second sabre, slowly but surely, attempting to rise and continuing on with the fight.

aila has yet to regain their footing when sunwing's attention turns their way. is this how i die? torn in two or roasted by dragon fire?

“aila ! ”   the   sound   came   so   quickly   that   edmure   did   not   register   that   the   voice   belonged   to   him.   it   sounded   like   a   roar,   as   though   the   dragon   had   possessed   him   for   just   a   moment.   care   and   concern   for   himself   (   if   he   ever   had   any   )   abandoned   him,   and   he   made   a   quick   dart   towards   their   positioning.   the   world   around   burned,   the   scent   of   cooking   meat   suffocating   in   the   air   ;   if   they   survived   it   would   have   been   a   miracle,   but   the   lord   would   have done   anything   in   his   power   to   ensure   the   life   saved   was   aila’s   instead   of   his.   perhaps   it   had   been   his   eruption   or,   maybe,   sunwing   sensed   an   end   to   the   battle,   but   soon   he   was   staring   straight   into   the   shimmering   eyes   of   the   beast.   two   deadly   black   onyxes,   trained   upon   him   and   his   squire. this   was   not   the   time   to   retreat,   to   remember   his   children   that   were   scattered   across   the   map.   instead,   edmure   stood   strong,   felt   the   heels   of   his   boots   sink   into   mud   surrounding   them.   sunwing   was   battered,   beaten,   broken,   but   even   an   injured   dragon   was   a   formidable   fighter.   he   searched   for   weakness,   for   any   sign   that   the   monster   was   failing.   despite   arrows   jutting   out   at   strange   angles   across   its   back,   slashes   and   gouges   and   broken   scales,   there   seemed   no   end   to   the   skirmish. edmure   shot   a   quick   glance   backwards,   a   fleeting   and   silent   ask   whether   aila   was   okay.   of   course   they   were   hurt   —   he   was   not   blind   to   the   explosion   of   red   on   their   sleeve   —   but   a   flesh   wound   was   much   different   to   a   life - ending   one.   his   gaze   was   trained   upon   them,   and   it   was   only   when   sunwing   shrieked   again   and   lunged   that   edmure’s   stupor   was   broken.   blade   swung   through   the   air   in   a   heavy   silver   arc,   colliding   with   the   thick   neck   of   the   creature,   drawing   blood   that   was   thicker   than   sap.

it   did   little   to   maim   the   mighty.   a   noise   pierced   the   sky,   a   mix   of   agony   and   rage,   and   that   was   when   edmure’s   world   went   black.   the   tapestries   would   speak   of   sunwing   raising   her   sweeping   golden   wing,   swatting   the   lord   and   sending   him   careening   through   the   air.   his   armored   body   collided   with   a   dull   thud   against   the   earth,   and   it   was   there   that   he   stayed   with   his   sword   arm   trapped   beneath   him.   in   his   dreams,   he   saw   allyria   and   jeyne   and   trystane.   he   saw   tanselle   and   elyas,   and   he   saw   aila   …   he   saw   aila,   too,   when   his   eyes   finally   blinked   open,   and   the   world   slowly   came   back   into   focus.   for   a   half - second   edmure   had   forgotten   where   he   was,   and   then   the   roaring   resumed.   he   dragged   his   body   up,   ignoring   the   searing   pain   in   his   shoulder,   grasped   for   his   sword   …   and   found   that   his   arm   did   not   move   at   all,   simply   stayed   hanging   uselessly   at   his   side   like   a   flesh - colored   cape. but   sunwing   was   finally   flagging.   the   onslaught   was   working.   edmure   tested   the   weight   of   his   sword   in   his   left   hand,   grimaced   to   raise   it,   dragged   himself   back   into   the   thick.   he   would   not   have   it   read   that   lord   fossoway   retreated,   in   spite   of   the   injury   that   sickened   his   stomach   from   the   pain.

each   passing   second   in   the   sick   bay   ached   his   chest,   tore   his   heart   into   pieces.   him   and   allyria   had   found   jeyne,   with   a   bump   to   the   head   and   her   memories   scattered   ;   tanselle   and   elyas   had   been   huddling   beneath   the   rubble   and   were   largely   unscathed.   that   left   trystane,   of   whom   edmure   hardly   remembered   seeing   at   all   at   the   tourney   ...   he   would   forever   blame   himself   if   something   had   happened,   that   he   had   been   so   wrapped   up   in   a   selfish   pursuit   of   glory   to   keep   an   eye   on   his   first-born   son.   but   then   he   saw   him,   and   the   world   came   back   into   tune.   despite   his   useless,   limp   right   arm,   the   lord   broke   into   a   run   and   enveloped   his   child   in   a   sideways   hug. “my   boy   ...   gods,   my   boy.   are   you   hurt ? ”

curfew had made cowards of king's landing. as the sun drifted behind the city's rooftops, the streets emptied with remarkable efficiency. even the drunks seemed to find religion whenever the bells warned that darkness approached. no one wished to be caught outside should a shadow pass overhead, wings broad enough to blot out the evening sky.

seora returned only because she had to. a weathered leather pouch hung loosely from one hand, its contents announcing themselves with the lazy clink of coins each time it struck her thigh. she had spent the better part of the afternoon exactly where sensible nobles had been advised not to linger -- tucked away in one of the few gambling dens stubborn enough to continue operating despite the city's fear. better cards than councils. better dice than dragons.

her fingers absently rolled a coin over the backs of her knuckles as she crossed beneath the gates of the red keep at an unhurried pace, more interested in seeing who else remained wandering its halls than in returning to her own chambers. she felt the weight of a gaze before she found its owner -- someone had been looking just a heartbeat too long. seora came to an easy stop, her eyes sliding toward them as one brow arched in expectation. "have i sprouted a second head?" the question landed as anything but an inquiry, sharp enough to cut through the quiet settling over the keep.

with   each   passing   evening,   steffon   toyed   with   whether   to   escape   into   the   heart   of   king’s   landing   or   to   remain   in   the   safety   of   the   keep.   before   they   had   been   a   wild   thing,   an   untethered   thing   —   now,   as   they   looked   out   across   the   city,   all   the   young   liege   could   see   were   the   burned   shadows   remaining   of   dragonfire.   they   had   never   known   such   fear,   marooned   away   from   their   sisters   and   fretting   that   they   would   not   return.   for   that   moment   the   unfamiliar   corridors   were   safe,   and   yet   steffon   still   felt   the   need   to   isolate   himself.   it   was   why   he   was   sat   at   the   end   of   a   dark   hall,   flute   in   hand,   listening   to   dulcet   tones   echo   and   dance   across   high   ceilings.

they   had   not   expected   to   have   company,   watched   seora   like   a   ghost   as   she   emerged   through   the   shadows.   the   flute   lowered,   the   music   ceased   ;   wide - eyed,   he   watched   her   before   turning   away,   sheepish.   “no.   you   have   not,”   protested   the   young   liege,   “i   was   just   not   expecting   …   well,   i   wanted   a   moment   away   from   all   of   the   chaos   and   carnage.   were   you   …   outside   ?   ” if   only   they   could   enchant   great   beasts   like   in   the   stories.   steffon’s   flute   was   like   an   extension   of   their   mouth,   and   yet   they   were   unable   to   command   even   a   rat.   dragons,   of   course,   were   beyond   any   realm   of   possibility,   but   that   not   mean   he   did   not   ache   to   be   somewhat   helpful   within   this   disaster.   if   only   he   had   been   a   knight,   or   a   maester   to   heal   the   sick.   what   good   was   music,   when   the   world   was   caving   in   ?   “are   there   still   …   is   it   dangerous   ?   ”

desmera smiles slightly, small and private. of course her brother would not hog the glory like a cocksure boy in the training yard. edmure was terribly good, to the point that desmera sometimes wondered if he sometimes grew bored with it. " yes, i know, " she nods, chin dipped slightly, playing at sympathy for the others wounded until it becomes somewhat true, worry slithering into the pit of her stomach like a snake uninvited. she ignores it deftly, pasting a smile on her face. " we are quite fortunate, us fossoways. " imbued with luck, just as desmera thought that they should be. none of them were missing, none of them felled. none of them maimed, even, when so many others were. she hums some at the mention of lady celtigar, remembering that daemian, too, was somebody's son rather than the strange entity she viewed him to be. " i shall visit him, later tonight. " a promise, spoken into existence. " i am well, of course. even if not —  i have many lives. one is a limit i do not ascribe to. "

since   returning   from   the   stands,   being   tended   to   by   maesters   and   filled   with   advice   (   that   he   had   since   ignored   ),   edmure   had   downplayed   the   entire   event   as   though   it   had   been   some   trivial   game.   the   lord   had   never   been   one   to   boast,   to   parade   his   feats   around   like   banners.   there   was   only   one   thing   lord   fossoway   felt   smug   over,   and   that   was   the   perfect   arrangement   of   his   family   —   his   beautiful   children,   his   wonderful   sisters,   his   nieces   and   nephews   and,   of   course,   his   dear   wife.   such   victory,   such   survival,   paled   when   compared   to   allyria   ;   he   was   just   thankful   that   they   all   returned   and   it   was   him   who   took   the   brunt   of   the   beatings.   edmure   gathered   his   useless   arm   into   his   lap,   humming   gently   at   desmera’s   words.   “we   are   quite   fortunate,   aren’t   we ?   almost   as   though   our   cider   is   liquid   luck   in   a   bottle.   i   do   not   wish   to   stretch   our   good   fortunes   too   far,   though.   let   us   quit   whilst   we   are   ahead.”   out   of   all   his   brood,   his   sisters   that   were   more   like   daughters,   he   knew   that   desmera   was   not   one   to   fret   over.   she   was   thick - skinned,   shook   setbacks   away   like   water   off   the   feathers   of   a   sea   bird.   a   sense   of   pride   threatened   to   bubble   over   and   spill   out   across   the   floor   of   his   chambers.   “send   my   well   wishes.   i   have   been   rather   avoidant   of   the   sick   bay.   i   fear,   if   i   return   to   share   my   condolences,   the   maesters   will   chain   me   back   to   the   bed   until   i   am   healed.”

the targayren princesses are among the only others who could match aila in their frantic grief and despair. an odd sort of solidarity that she did not wish on any other. the merciless river that claimed both a mother and sister. but amerei is a strong swimmer. the five words, a mantra said on repeat again and again... till even to their own ear they sounded senseless. "my sister is a trout and your mother is a dragon, there is no one as capable. they will be fine. they must." their grandsire would not survive the heartache. with each passing day, the whispers grow louder that survival is impossible, yet aila refuses to give up hope.

they had a boat to search the bay themselves but with a princess at their side, there's a new worry whether this would be a wise idea. after all, aila did not want to be responsible if something were to happen to another targaryen on their watch. "they've already searched this area but the water feeds into various smaller channels. perhaps they are caught there or rescued somewhere unable to return with the dragons overhead."

"how familiar are you with different boats? i have a river runner that i can row but... are you a strong swimmer?"

a   dragon   and   a   trout   were   an   unlikely   pair,   one   that   would   have   provoked   laughter   under   any   other   circumstance.   instead,   alysanne   offered   a   sympathetic   smile   and   lowered   her   head   in   a   nod.   “they   are   strong.   some   of   the   strongest.   i   knew   amerei,   remember   her   kindness   in   the   sick   bay   when   i   was   at   my   lowest   …   truly,   i   wish   for   her   safe   return.   she   is   such   a   kind   woman.   they   are   in   short   supply,   especially   in   the   wake   of   all   this   politics.”   the   princess   before   her   sickness   and   the   princess   following   were   markedly   different   people.   before   alysanne   lacked   sympathy,   saw   the   iron   throne   in   her   mind   with   little   care   for   those   she   must   wrong   in   order   to   secure   it.   now,   she   looked   across   the   bay   with   desperation   and   ache,   willing   for   the   safe   return   of   not   just   her   mother   but   all   of   the   missing.   a   rampant   imagination   had   thought   of   every   outcome,   the   hope   that   they   were   simply   holed   up   somewhere   on   a   bank   or   in   a   faraway   cave   with   only   fish   and   low   lamplight   to   stave   off   death.   it   was   more   hopeful   than   the   alternative,   albeit   near   insanity   to   believe.   “i   can   swim,   lady   tully.   do   not   fret.   i   do   not   wish   to   stand   by   and   watch,   to   waste   the   days   without   getting   my   feet   wet.   it   is   a   risk   i   am   willing   to   take.   boats   i   am   more   unfamiliar   with,   but   i   can   learn.”   what   use   was   decorum   when   action   was   the   only   resolution   to   this   terrible   curse   ?   standing idly by   would   only   serve   to   prolong   the   pain.   alysanne   was   unsure   how   much   more   she   could   take.
