as a princess of dorne , and the youngest by a mile , she always felt like somewhat out of place. not in her role , but in her family. there was always an emotional disconnect with her parents — whether it was their vast age gap , or ellaria's preference for silence. either way , she spent her youth in sunspear developing her thirst for power.
ellaria had always been ambitious. ever since she was little she knew what she wanted , and would try her damnedest to make it happen. she would soak up whatever subject was placed before her and find a way to make it useful. nothing was ever wasted on her. every opportunity was a valuable lesson , and something she made the most of. she might not be the heir , she might not be a man — ready to go into battle head first without fear — but she was a quick learner and she was cunning. the second child was not content with being the spare. she had a goal in mind , and it wasn't sitting at home embroidering a dress.
ellaria honed her skills , preferring to use her wit and cunning — as well as the sharpened blades hidden within her silks. her refined , elegant demeanor allowed her to move through high society with ease. while she's not as well liked as her older sister — there's always been more important things to concern herself with than ensuring the commoners approval — she thrives among the nobles. all it takes is a polite smile and courtly manners to sway the lords and ladies around her. waiting for any sign of weakness to be used against them.
her loyalty will always reside with dorne , but that does not mean that she doesn't see the use in having ears and eyes beyond the red mountains. the more influence dorne has in the red keep , the more likely it is that dorne will remain strong. the goal is to dismantle the council for the new ruler of the iron throne and wield it as a weapon. to form it with people that ensures that the wants of her , and dorne , comes true.
lyanna heard the screeching of the dragons as the ascended to the sky , and felt a hand wrap around her heart and squeezed. she didn't know where steffon was. was he out there , running from those beasts , or was he already laying beneath the rubble ? he couldn't be. she would know if half of her was gone , taken from this world. "i can't ," she told lady shizuka. aiming for the courtyard and , then , beyond it. "not until i know they're safe."
each movement felt laboured, exhausting, but edmure would not return to the sick bay any time soon. after felling a dragon, watching the beast take its last breath at his feet, laying uselessly in a bed was quite the anticlimax ; who was he to occupy the maester’s attention, when he was merely grazed ? with allyria carrying their next child, edmure was glued to those that were already earthside. “i am much the homebody, but seeing the joy on your faces brought joy to myself. that has much been the pattern of our marriage over the years.” edmure’s blue eyes became unfocused, as if he was looking into some distant and faraway realm. “me and your mother … it wasn’t love at first sight, but we grew together like branches of trees intertwining. it was when i accepted you as my own that affection began to bloom, when we play - fought in the fields all those many years ago.” a fond memory, one that he ached for jeyne to remember. it was then that his focus returned, lingered on his daughter in the hopes she could recall the day.
it felt triumphant , to know something with certainty. her father confirmed everything she had suspected and jeyne studied the maps once more , invigorated with the knowledge that she was going to her homeland. "so , mama and i are excited ," jeyne stated , brushing over starfall as if the name alone would invoke some sort of memory. "i do remember my sword. the one you gave me." jeyne was sure it was back home , more of a decoration now that they had outgrown it. "it's a beloved gift." she grabbed her father's cup before he lost his grasp on it. "i beat you. i was an expert before my fifth nameday." jeyne leaned down and pressed a soft kiss on her father's cheek. "i'm sorry that i do not yet remember everything. but it's getting more and more clear every day." with a satisfied sigh she leaned back in her chair. "mama liked braiding my hair when i was little. we used to sit in our chambers and she'd brush my hair until it shone like silk. we used to hide there together."
"that is kind of you to say, my lady." betha did not blush easily, but there is a hint of red that begins to color her cheeks. something she attempt to will away with a though. "you did make an impression, though i do not know if you wish me to tell you all the sordid details." she chuckles at the remembrance of a short escapade, though betha tended to have them with quite a bit of people, so she would not fault the lady even if she had her memory and did not know. "that is good to hear, not the memory bit, but the rest. the maesters have taken good care of you, yes? i am sure your memory will find its way back to you easily. though there is no need to worry for me, only a few scrapes here and there, nothing that i am not used to. it is my hope that everyone shall recover well, you included."
"oh , i don't think any of us would love to hear you re-tell our … affairs out loud. it will just lead to more embarrassment on my part. no , i shall tell you all about it once i remember." she smiled conspiratorially to the woman next to her , and shook her head at her own antics. was it really necessary for her to indulge in her own humiliation , even if it was just for a moment ? "i am in good health , if we take away that minor detail. hopefully you are the same." a cloud right above them twisted into a flurry of colours and shapes. it was peaceful for once. "i don't remember if i saw the dragons ," jeyne confessed. "i imagine they must've been magnificent … even though they destroyed the silk road and put an end to the tourney."
You're shaking. Here, take my jacket. / sevan to ros
rosamund wrapped the heavy fabric around her shoulders , hugging it around her frail frame with a tentative smile. "thank you , ser sevan." this was the second time in not that long the knight had helped her , though thankfully this wasn't a matter of life and death. just a slight breeze in the evening light. "are you … excited for our travels to dorne ?" her cheeks coloured slightly. "not that i … i wasn't suggesting that it was just us … of course our families will all travel. and the other houses … oh , heavens." rosamund had never had the urge to disappear before that moment. how had she lost all ability to speak ? "i … i am looking forward to seeing it. and …" the smile turned bashful. "our families mayhaps coming to an understanding."
"You matter to me. More than you know." (seraphina to jeyne)
jeyne helt an immense heaviness in her chest where she stood between trunks and hastily folded clothing. it was bittersweet , to leave oldtown. jeyne had felt incredibly stifled while being there , even with all the knowledge being stored there. it's high walls and devout nature lent itself to an atmosphere where every breath was watched and measured. but within it all , she had found sera , who — in the end — had become something so dear to her that it hurt letting go. it wasn't hard for jeyne to feel like she was abandoning the young lady. especially when she was standing in their dooreway looking so lost that jeyne felt like her heart was splitting in two. without words jeyne strode across the stone floors and wrapped her arms around sera in a tight embrace. "you are the brightest light ," they whispered , words muffled into sera's hair. "cider hall will always be there for you , should you need it."
willas had pled his case with the gods many times, and still he is not certain they will ever forgive him for his terrible indulgence in lyanna arryn. lyanna hightower, as she had been styled then. for an instant, in the midst of it all, she could have been his own wife rather than orland's, sharing with him their marital bed. instead, she had fled from orland to him in an act of what? spite, perhaps? " thank you, my lady, " he nods his gratitude, a secret smile finding its home on the side of his mouth that faces away from her. " your beauty endures, which comes as . . . little shock. " a truth, spoken earnestly. he would likely be damned to the seven hells for what he had done, and the fear that he felt at the thought was terribly real. he ignores it now, turning his cheek to face another fear in its stead. " magic can be terrible, too. " he wonders if she had been present at blackwater rush, seen the way the dragons had tossed people to and fro as if they were nothing but bales of hay.
it was strange , the conflicting emotions in lyanna's heart. but willas always seemed to have a way to soften her edges , even when she hated everything surrounding him. well , maybe except for sera — who held a soft spot in her memories. willas just had something that made lyanna feel more teasing than rude , with her finding comfort in his bed when her own felt wrong. "you don't think i've aged terribly ?" she asked , challenging his statement with a question more playful than combative. "it's been quite some time since we last saw each other. you can be honest." the lands around king's landing continued to lay bare. "i saw you … you were walking with lady alysanne targaryen. you looked … friendly. are you bringing a targaryen to oldtown ?" the mention of magic made her gaze flicker back to willas , a curious tilt to her head. “are you scared of magic , willas ? i thought you believed in the seven. that's as much magic as anything , isn't it ?”
and what of the ones that lie beneath? r'hllor prefers such things. answers to be in the crevices and bare as they are revealed. "i suppose for those answers, it depends how far we're willing to dig." and with hands, not tools, for that would give more devotion towards the burial and undoing it. what an odd method of returning such things to life, a resurrection of sorts. "good, good. jingyi's back has been strained from being thrown about by the stands collapsing. otherwise ... i fear i have lost dexian to assisting the smallfolk." they give a faint smile in return. they do not embitter themself against him for doing so, and would expect to find him nowhere else in truth — and yet.
"so , no answers ," lyanna confirmed quietly. it would be easier for the crown to wash their hands of everything outside of the castle walls , write it off as a tragedy best left in the past. if anyone suspected the missing princess was laying among the rubble , however , the streets would be clean with no stone left unturned. "your family has always been most giving with our people." lyanna cast a quick glance at gwyneth , not fully knowing if she held a fondness for her husband and new family , or if it was just a means to an end. lyanna had never been particularly interested in politics , and besides knowing the noble houses she had less than an idea of the personal relations within them. "is the vale to your liking ? is it much different than what you were used to ?"
they hiss as the sharp of the lannister's elbow presses against his shoulder blade, but allow themselves only that complaint in the face of a beautiful lady. "i'd be a shit knight if i could not lift a feather," sevan grins shamelessly even in the face of danger, good arm pressing behind them as they hoist rosamund higher against their back. really, she weighs no more than the grand claymore he bears against his spine regularly. it is far from him now, somewhere along the burning wreckage, originally left in the tent that they dressed in. the sharp of his longsword would do little damage against dragon or its fire, keeping it tucked in its sheath. he only feels sorry that she must bear the task of grasping both sevan and his shield. "hold me tightly," advises the knight, still dressed in the slippery steel of his tourney armour. "scream if that thing," — dark hues glance towards the drake, being handled by a battalion of people in far better shape than them — "gets any closer to us." they would simply run faster if that were the case. without another word, the reyne begins the sprint across the battlefield, feet moving swiftly along the mud of the tourney ground, used to fighting against it in the case of a brash challenge.
the easy-going nature painted a faint smile on rosamund’s face. clearly injured and scared of beasts several sizes bigger than them both combined , he still had a tone to his voice that raised her spirits. “i just hope we both stay in one piece until we reach the castle ,” came the reply , and she wrapped her arms tighter around him. ser reyne was in good shape , despite their injury and seemed to carry her with ease. the castle was still far ways away , but less of a foggy shape in the distance. “thank you , ser.” she leaned her head against his shoulder to keep her gaze steady and his hair brushed against her cheek. “i know i’m probably more of a burden than you’d anticipated , but i appreciate your–” her words got cut off by a loud , distant shriek. “i appreciate it all the same.” words were unnecessary after that , would only take more effort and energy needed to escape. truth be told , even though rosamund had done none of the running , her heart was beating fast enough against her ribcage to fool anyone. “i think … i think it might be flying the other way ? i can’t see it anymore.”
if jacks could exhale his exasperation without pain, he would. alas, he cannot, and so he merely furrows his brow. " leave, " he insists, though the word feels wrong aimed at her. terribly so. he cannot look at her as he says it, and so he forces himself to assess the empty space where his left arm should be. it is a form of self - flaggellation unlike any other. he would cry, allow the salt heat of his tears to trail down his face to soak into the off - white bedlinens, but the fire had stolen from his body any and all moisture it could find. his throat remained dry, even days later, even gallons of water later. the milk of the poppy clouds his mind, dulls his physical pain. but it does not dull the terrible ache of his heart. he misses his arm like one might miss a lover taken too early by the gods, like one might miss a father or a mother. he misses his arm how he had missed his mother, already dead as he passed below the bloody gate in a farmer's cart on his way to bury her. " i do not wish to have you at my bedside, lyanna. "
if he thought the words would hurt her , jacks was sorely mistaken. lyanna might not understand the intricate dramas of politics , or how to properly fasten a hem without it fraying — but she knew him. even if he assumed the words spoken were true , that he wanted her gone , she knew the truth. there was a pitcher of water next to his bedside , and lyanna grabbed a cloth to dampen it , before gently dabbing it across his forehead to cool him down. if he could he probably would've slapped her hand away. "i do not care for your wants and wishes , jacks bolton ," lyanna replied , voice steady and calm. there was a strength behind her words that completely swallowed his own hesitation. if she had been any other , a lady taught to wield words like the finest embroidery , perhaps her words would've been less blunt. but , alas , lyanna wasn't a lady in that sense. so her words remained sharp and honest , with no filter where there should have been one. "i shall stay. whether you have two arms , or one , or none — i shall stay."
the last that she wished to do was also find frustration with her sister at a time like this, yet elliana could not help the harshness of their next words. “ you have to move faster ! do you not hear them ? i cannot fight a dragon, rosamund ! ” in truth, she could do very little. with the amount of smoke swirling about, they could barely see what was in front of their face well enough to continue to try to steer them in a direction that would not put them deep in the throngs of people. “ help by continuing to move ! that is all you need to do ! ” she would feel the guilt, later, that came from knocking others’ bodies to the side with their full weight in the effort of keeping them from blocking their way — would pray to the gods for forgiveness when lana felt the impact that meant that they had hit someone in a part that likely knocked the wind from them for their and rosamund’s own survival. “ just ... just keep moving. ” it would be a bridge they must cross when it came time, as they would never forgive themself for not at least trying to go back for the other two lions for the comfort of one - especially if something happened to them and they could have helped.
it felt awful to be someone everyone constantly worried about. try as she might , rosamund fell behind , stumbling after her sister through the smoke and chaos. “i’m going as fast as i can ,” she cried , holding onto elliana’s hand with a tight grip. the dragons screeched in the distance , and her breath hitched. it would be her fault if they didn’t make it. she was the weak one holding elliana back from safety — or from looking for their siblings.it felt as if a fist was clenched around her lungs , squeezing out every bit of air left. when the crowds lightened , less thick than in the midst of the tourney grounds. rosamund slumped against a wall. “you– you can move ahead ,” rosamund told her , pleading. “i can see the castle. i will be okay.” even as the words left her mouth , she knew they were probably said in vain. the only thing bigger than lannister pride was their loyalty to each other. and as much of a burden as she was , she was still part of the pack.
edmure had recited the story like scripture many a time before. it was repeated to exhaustion when jeyne had been younger, with sparkles in her eyes and sweeping reenactments. the lord was unable, with half of his body out of use, to bring to life the beginning of jeyne’s existence with as much grandeur as a bedtime story, but he still took a seat and smiled in thanks as his daughter perched beside him. “correct. it is coming back to you, albeit slowly.” pride swelled within, as it so often did when he looked upon his children. “your birth mother passed away young, and so you were cared for by your new mother. it was a dying wish, that you were to be granted a plentiful life. when your mother was married into my family i became your father. you are now a fossoway, but you were born on the banks of warmer rivers.” a beat passed. the lord clumsily lifted his drink with his off hand. “are there any other gaps you wish for me to help you with ? ”
it was clear by the look in her father's eyes that he didn't mind telling the story again. despite his rough appearance everything about him seemed to melt , both in talking about her mother and herself. even as jeyne had trouble putting things together she could feel the warmth in his words , the fondness playing behind his eyes. "i bet you hated every second ," she replied , even though she knew it was a lie. he would protest vehemently , no doubt. "there are a lot of gaps , but most of them happened elsewhere … i like to travel , don't i ? i see myself on strange shores but i can't tell which belongs where. cider hall is next to a river , but these ports are too grand to not be by the ocean." there was a slight shake to his hand as he raised his goblet , and jeyne wished she could help him further. but he was a proud man , and would hate to be coddled in such a way. "tell me about mother , more. i remember the story , but i love the way you tell it."
