Dissociations…
the 50 most disturbing movies (according to complex.com)
This article (contains NSFW images) details the 50 most disturbing movies these two editors have seen, and looking through them, I’d say it’s a pretty respectable list (some of these movies sound unbelievably disturbing).
bold means I’ve watched it
italics means it’s on my to-watch list
* means maaaaybe
50. Hostel (I have absolutely no interest in torture porn whatsoever)
49. Natural Born Killers (seen it, didn’t like it at all. The violence is truly vile especially near the end, and while it’s supposed to be a satire on America’s love of violence, for me, it just turned into what it was supposedly satirizing by the end)
48. Transsiberian (This was on my to-watch queue already, but I had no idea it was supposed to be disturbing, so uh, HM. I GUESS I’LL FIND OUT)
47. Valhalla Rising (notable for having people literally RIP EACH OTHER TO PIECES with their BARE HANDS. OKAY)
46. A Clockwork Orange (only half true cause I’ve only seen the first half, but I need to watch the whole thing at some point)
45. The Human Centipede II (nope)
44. The Exorcist * (The big boogedy horror movie. The thing is, I don’t LIKE horror movies that much unless they have some sort of clever twist, so I’m not as interested in this even though it’s considered a classic)
43. We Need to Talk About Kevin (Tilda Swinton is supposed to be phenomenal in this)
42. Se7en (Just a good-ass movie)
41. I Spit On Your Grave
40. Man Bites Dog
39. Gummo
38. Murder-Set-Pieces
37. The Bunny Game (this movie sounds FUCKING REPUGNANT)
36. Funny Games (the whole “rewinding” thing in this sounds horrifyingly ingenious, but it is apparently just unspeakably hard to watch because the director actualy HATES HIS AUDIENCE)
35. Night and Fog (Added this Holocaust documentary to my watch list just because it seems like a movie that NEEDS to be watched just for its historical value)
34. The Snowtown Murders * (Supposedly very good, but it sounds so bleak that I’m not in any hurry to see it)
33. Sweet Movie
32. Deadgirl
31. Antichrist * (I’m MORBIDLY CURIOUS about this one because Lars Von Trier is such a fascinating director, but at the same time, it sounds terrifying)
30. Happiness * (Another film from a director who seems to hate humanity. It is something I may or may not look into)
29. Kill List * (Apparently one of the scariest movies ever made in the past few years)
28. Un Chien Andalou
27. Oldboy (I’m surprised to see this so high up. While there are disturbing elements to be sure, a lot of the movies rated lower sound MUCH WORSE)
26. High Tension
25. Eyes Without a Face * (This is supposed to be a REALLY good French horror movie from the 60’s, but the concept is so disturbing that I don’t know if I can stomach it)
24. I Stand Alone (notable for having a horribly clever addition of a 30 second “warning” countdown to have people leave the theater/turn it off before the disturbing climax)
23. Begotten (this just looks fucking stupid, and according to Jackson and co, IT IS)
22. Man Behind the Sun
21. Ichi the Killer (A Takashi Miike film I have no desire to see. Supposed to make Saw and Hostel look like baby movies for babies)
20. Martyrs
19. Eraserhead * (Maybe someday, ol Lynch, ol buddy. Maybe if I see every other movie in the world first)
18. Blood Feast
17. Inside
16. Visitor Q (Miike again, I’d be more likely to see this one more than Ichi the Killer, but this one sounds super fucked up too)
15. A Serbian Film (NOPE)
14. August Underground (this just sounds vile)
13. The Last House on the Left
12. Titicut Follies (I feel like this one would disturb me personally too much. It’s a documentary in the 60’s that exposes the horrible abusive practices of a mental institution, and having a severely autistic brother myself would probably make this too excruciating to watch)
11. Flowers of Flesh and Blood
10. Irreversible
9. Requiem for a Dream (This is on my to watch list cause of Darren Aronofsky, but I have heard that it is INCREDIBLY difficult to watch. O…oh boy….)
8. Aftermath
7. In a Glass Cage
6. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer * (Supposed to be good, but eh)
5. Audition (A Miike film that I do intend on seeing. Although I hear it is not a fun ride at the end!)
4. Pink Flamingos (Thanks but no thanks, John Waters)
3. Cannibal Holocaust (I heard about this one all the time in high school. Notable for being so convincing that the filmmakers were sent to court and had to prove it was fake)
2. Nekromantik
1. Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom (NOPE. I do think it’s funny that Bill Hader, who is a surprisingly experienced cinephile, calls it the best date movie on Earth. NOPE)
