what had there been to say? 'yes, i am sorry for taking emotional advantage of you'? jaina clenches her jaw, tightening it into the thin line that she sees stretch out into her mind. it was a fine tightrope to tread across, but she had not been a terribly balanced person, and found it difficult to weigh the consequences of nobility against common decency. ( nobility, it would seem, won this round. )
jaina does her best, most days. some days aren't enough. too many of them are overwhelming. her shoulders slump, as she drops into the seat beside of him.

honestly. i would love to write more of jaina pre-theramore, and especially around lordaeron and early dalaran, when she was still so young and full of life, before the bomb took the light out of her eyes LMFAO. she can be a fun person still, but it's very jaded and cynical in comparison to who she used to be, if that makes sense.

jaina had always found herself enamoured with the prestigious lady emberdust. a woman shrouded in mystery, slinking her way into the courts of the alliance, making pleasantries with the nobility and causing a stirring rhythm of stifled laughs bred only by smalltalk.
sometimes, jaina thinks she sees a brief glimpse of the truth, a shadow on the wall of webbed wings that stretch as far as the ceilings in the keep would rise. but her heart beats, and it all dissipates. jaina always writes it off as fable, as some trick of the mind that she perceives only due to stress and the history of the wrynns. she wouldn't have believed it, anyway. lisara had filled the halls of stormwinds keep and the council meetings with honeyed words and promises she had always kept, lining their coffers well enough that there was no need to worry that she brought the scent of blood on her trail, let alone why.

the clamour of the party goers rings almost as loud as the drums of war do. ( jaina's head pounds as fiercely as hooves on the earth. ) she almost hadn't noticed the woman approach. she seemed high in spirits, at least, which was enough for jaina to push the throbbing headache down. ( into the back corners of her mind, where doubt and suspicion festers, but makes no effort to show. )
jaina laughs softly to herself, taking a drink from her champagne to stifle the feeling of sparks dancing on the back of her teeth.
❝ maybe one day, we'll find them stuffed away in some magisters dusty old tomes. ❞ she offers something of a chaste wink, giving an earnest smile. jaina didn't know what to make of her, in truth. but she was wise, and good company. that in itself had to be enough.

were it that easy. the words hang on her lips like guilty men swinging in the shade of the gallows, but never touch the earth below. jaina feels the dampness on her face like wetness in the sand. ( maybe she can wiggle her toes under it's surface, and find respite in the memory of home. that would make her feel better. )
she shifts in her seat, to better face her newly-acquired company. she rolls her shoulders, feebly straightens her posture, and wipes the back of her gloves across her tear ducts. she lets out a weak laugh that dies as soon as it leaves her lips.
the world was too wide and had too many shadows looming overhead for jaina to even think of letting her bones splinter under the weight of something as paltry as grief. she was getting much older than many people they had both known to ever be. that, at least, had to come as some comfort, bittersweet as it tasted.

An indication of intent. ) Golds gone to ash. Plate and mail to replace a scholar’s soft robes. She was arcane by all definitions now. Amidst the horde of indignities suddenly piled upon him, that even she should be almost unrecognize-- Ridiculous. she stands as stalwart as a scarecrow, ever-watchin and gnarled; a figure best suited to scare others off rather than invite them in. ( what had she become? ) seeing him here had been enough of a trial, trudging up old memories she had either buried neatly in an unmarked grave, or let wash away with the sins of her mantle.

she had lost so much more than theramore when the bomb dropped. plunged deep under the saltwater of the bay, jaina had lost the last vestige of her innocence while the air choked out of her lungs, before being pulled back from the brink of oblivion.
( how would he have felt? selfishly, jaina wonders what arthas would think if he had found out she died that day. would he unearth every catacomb to find her? or let the brine take her? )

it's the way that arthas purging stratholme had the same emotional impact on jaina as her fucking FATHER being MURDERED and the feeling that she could have prevented it literally haunted her until bfa
i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good
