call him judgemental but this is about as stereotypical WITCHY as one can get. strange., tiny woman. woodsy hut. kinda popping up outta nowhere. place even smells spooky in that good way. figures. ending up in the middle of the woods in a 'witch's' cabin isn't what dean planned. would be one of the last things planned on. or ever would. less it was to gank said witch. however--that wasn't the case tonight. he'd been tracking down some big nasty. rumor had it that it was the flatwoods monster. yeah, that one. the one that redefines the word metal head.
sure. he didn't think it was ACTUALLY gonna embody the description written in folklore books. hard to think a garden tool with legs was responsible for a string of weird, headless deaths. 'less those deaths were turnip farmers. which they weren't. okay. you know what? don't judge the guy that ran into the woods looking to save more people from meeting their untimely demise.
no surprise when meeting the monster face to face that the metal description ended up being shiny blackish silver skin and a bald head with a gaping mouth and rows of teeth that were sharp as knives. vacant glare. clawy fingers. you know the type? only dean thought he did..til he didn't. and that thing came crawling up out of the ground and ended up snagging a grip in his leg and arm so deep it tore ribbons into his skin before he planted two bullets in its head.. silver. you know? to match his eyes.
the bleeding was being a bitch. ended up ass first in the ground trying to get the flow to stop when a local caught his attention from behind. sure, he might've been a little apprehensive to say the VERY least--even a woman by herself in towns like this? can be deceiving. but.. hey.. better than bleeding out before he made it to his car. right? and he could deal with anything that might come his way. fingers flinch against the table as he watches the needle sink into his skin for another stitch. "sorry about bleeding on your lawn.. crappy way to meet someone.." a small smile's cast down at her handiwork. "you always open up your house to wounded strangers?"
the old woman laughed, not rudely but with the harsh edge that age gave one's humor, making a point of being cautious around the worst of his injuries. you've gone so soft in your age, she chastised herself, but baba knew what this one had seen and done. what he would see and would do. death had confronted this boy and again and again and would still come collect his due --
-- just not yet, and for once the old witch felt no desire to interfere.
the tales of her brutality weren't necessarily exaggerated, but they were terribly old by this point. she hadn't lured anyone into her home to eat them in centuries and it had only ever been a hobby rather than a calling. her duties were vast, unshakable, and necessary for the balance between chaos and order.
child-eating was just a bit of a fun on the side back in the day! truly! impossible to convince anyone of that now, but no need. the eldest gods did not often worry too often of what the mortals thought, and she had been killed in vengeance and reborn stronger enough times now to hardly notice anymore. she had always represented more than the terror of unfettered nature, although the mortals rarely bothered to understand that.
with a final tug, she secured the bandage. the salve on his wound would help the stinging of healing, for she knew better than to think this one would take his time to rest.
" as a rule, no, " she replied, slavic accent heavy but perfectly easy to understand. " but i knew that attempting to move your corpse off my garden would be an even bigger headache, so i said eh, why not. "
she gave him a crooked grin, internally shaking her head. baba clearly was going soft if a hunter such as this one was enough to make her gather such wool.
" you have no idea how nosy neighbors get if you end up with a bloody corpse in your hedges. " again.
HOPE OPTED TO LET HIM ramble away. there was a twist in her chest, because she really hadn't come with the desire of making him bear through memories of what was probably the worst time of his life ( at least that hadn't been her goal yet ). of making him feel like he had to fumble through promises of being a better person; of being part of the team rather than trying to solve it all on his own. did she WANT him to cooperate? did she want his knowledge of the dark presence?
...of course. it would be foolish not to seek out those things. anything to help them get a leg up against a lurking beast that came off as so unendingly powerful. they were, as jade noted, toothpicks fighting a giant turtle. a weakness, a soft spot, a c r a c k in the armor... any of it was needed over the coming weeks for the battle ahead. the confrontation when it arrived was going to be a war to put it simply - one where no one would be spared. the entire island would need to endure. women, children, the innocent, the brave, fathers, mothers, siblings, strong, meek... not that hope was about to demand every single body to be on the front lines, but they would need to be ready to support in the background. the bugs were already implementing that fact with how they swarmed over everything and all. no one would be spared if or when they broke through.
if they were such a fiasco, then never mind the unknown darkness that tormented oninoshima from another realm-
her thoughts were getting away from her to a degree, so the blue haired flickered back to everything the elder had just spilled to her. it was a lot to take in. his explanations, his willingness. hope wanted to make sure she was considerate even if she was still learning how to navigate daigo post-possession. they hadn't exactly been b e s t i e s prior to it all... what with her siding with kendo for a time on accusing him of being the reason for jade's disappearance. that had probably made her somewhat of a rift in his life ( pun somewhat intended ).
"we'll figure it out. just do what you're promising here and work with us, okay? that's the best way at this point to help your island. your family... we don't have to pick apart your brain at this instant. i do want everything you can tell me, all that you just said and more, but in time. with you, the night rose, the supernovas, oxr, your siblings... we're all in this together now."
a pause, grimacing. "ugh, now i'm getting motivational speechy. look, jones and i are still formulating a plan. but it's GOOD to know you're on our side now. though i ammmmm going to have to recommend you handle the whole talking thing with kendo and jade. eventually. you know - spiritual and emotional healing. it'll be a benefit to have the three of you proving yourself as guardians for this island. shame isn't necessarily a bad thing, but to pull back from them when we need to unite more than ever isn't the the right move here."
daigo let her do the motivational speech thing, because he knew he needed it pretty badly at this point and either way, hope was right. guilt wasn't something he could afford any more than his earlier hubris had been. they were up against the wall right now, and were already calling in literally all the help they could get. daigo knew better than to waste time being in his feelings when there was work to do.
and that talk with his siblings would come, immediately after. he'd promised them, but he'd also promised himself. now, he guessed he was promising hope too.
probably good, having people look out for you. to care for your survival instead of just going it on your own and being surprised that didn't work out in the long run. it wasn't overt advice or anything, but it stuck with him for the upcoming weeks. the upcoming, incredibly weird weeks.
in the end, the dark presence was defeated, but it took more or less everyone that jonesy and hope could call in. daigo didn't go crazy trying to meet them all, but it was absolutely crazy to see the sheer amount of manpower amassed just to send the demon back to wherever it came from. and seeing it first hand? it made daigo realize where he really needed to be, what he needed to do.
so the next time he saw hope, it was on a whole different island, after the zero-point shard was shattered and the call went out to the elites that it was all hands on deck time. after the big battle on oninoshima, daigo had spent an afternoon talking to jules and signing up officially, leaving his masks behind for an AR and melee fist weapons that he was getting pretty damned good at. so standing there, sure of himself and his side now? that felt pretty damned good too.
... although handing hope the note he promised to deliver from kendo? that was pretty awkward. daigo shuffled up after the official brief broke up, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly as he handed hope the envelope.
" heh, uh. yeah. don't worry, didn't read it or anything. and jade says hi and had a million questions i forgot already, but they're both doing great. "
luke had been the one to tell him of anakin, and artoo had filled in blanks, creating the image of a brash and brave young man too clouded by love to remain in the light. his parents had told him of the horrors and grief that lay in vader's wake, the destruction wrought by a man who'd destroyed his own humanity in service of power. a dream to mold himself after, a nightmare he felt no choice but to become.
the stories of padmé had been few and far between, largely from artoo's wealth of stories. then, as now, he thought he could understand the sort of love that anakin must have felt in order to become who he was. it claws at the back of his throat, behind his eyes.
but he feels able to confess things to her that he hasn't been to anyone else. "i think it's something wrong with my love," he says, soft and quiet in the way that children confess fears to a loved one. the slightest choking that he could not force out of his voice. it's a conviction he'd had as long as he could remember, an article of inward faith solidified by the night he woke up to luke's saber glowing green. "there's something wrong with me."
she looked at this grandson she had no chance to meet, marveling at how much he took after her and her family, just as his mother had. dark hair, sharp eyes -- a burden on their shoulders before they were even born. even now, in whatever form this was, padmé felt the sting of fear that she wasn't up to this task, wasn't going to be able to save ben from himself.
after all, you already failed so completely before, whispered a voice in her mind, so familiar and laced with contempt. the shadow over her family and their lives, even in death.
but she was never one to give up completely. even in the end, fighting against whatever was draining her life from her to try and survive for her children. the force or something had given her this chance for a reason. she wouldn't give up.
" you remind me so much of your grandfather. not -- not because of darkness, ben. i want you to understand that, please. what you hold, what he held is a power that the dark side wants, no matter what. and it makes you a target, makes it so that -- i don't know, these damned wizards manipulate you and those around you to get their hands on it. " she was incorporeal, yet could reach out and touch his cheek somehow just the same, looking at him with dark eyes shimmering with tears that could not be shed.
" they will lie to you. tell you that you are broken and fallen and beyond hope, just so that they can get closer to it. they will do the same to those near you -- to isolate you from them, to convince them in their weakest moments that you are a threat instead of worthy of love and care. you are not broken, ben. not in love or anything else. you are strong and they fear that you'll wield it against them one day. i do not know who works in the shadows against you, ben. but trust me when i tell you that i know their type. "
she gave him a gentle kiss to the forehead, a benediction of sorts. all that she could offer him now.
