@local-dragon-owner asked me to make a post about the ways in which tarot can be helpful for mental health maintenance. I've been thinking about witchcraft and health in general and also about tarot and health. Anyways here is the post!
Disclaimer: This will not be a post about how to use tarot to predict mental health outcomes. This is also not a substitute for help from a licenced or certified mental health professional.
Using tarot for when you don't know what you're feeling
There are times when you might feel something but don't always know what it is you're feeling or why you're feeling that way. I always reference Blanche from the Golden Girls when it comes to this feeling, she called the feeling "magenta". You can simply ask two questions, "what is this feeling?" and "why am I feeling this way?" This might be helpful for anyone but especially those that attend mental health therapy. Having at least some insight into your feelings to share with a therapist.
Tarot to ease your mind about potential outcomes
Even the most calm and collected person can have moments of doubt or worry about the outcome of a situation. Instead of asking your cards for a concrete outcome, ask the cards the following question "what is the best possible outcome of this situation?" If the card is what you consider a positive card then meditate, pray, and/or do spellwork to encourage that outcome. If the card is one that makes you feel uneasy or one that you'd rather not have as an outcome for a situation. Ask the cards again "what can I do to change this outcome?" or if you feel that this is not applicable to the situation "what can I do to find peace with this outcome?"
Tarot for self reflection
Tarot can also be a great tool to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, you can ask yourself some of the following questions.
What are some of my strengths?
What are some of my weaknesses?
What parts of myself do I hide?
Why do I hide certain parts of myself?
Who would I be if I felt completely safe to be my most authentic self?
I hope you found this post helpful and please reach out to a medical professional if you are having mental health struggles. Tarot and divination in general are wonderful tools but there is nothing wrong with realizing that you need medical intervention. You owe that to yourself and you are worthy of receiving the best care possible, mind, body, and soul!
Hanging rosemary above the doorstep, and/or above doors of the house for protection.
Sprinkling a line of dried red pepper on a windowsill, to counter a curse.
Placing a mix of dried & ground eggshells and black pepper in every corner of a room to keep out unwanted spirits.
Placing a decoration representing a witch in the kitchen, to keep away illness and to favor health.
Crafting an effigie (no matter how crude!) and make it into the guardian of your home by charging it with your intent of protection and placing it near the front door.
Crafting small witch ladders to hang around the house.
Discrete Warding for the spiritual/witchy ppl that can’t practice in the open:
Use herbs you have in your kitchen. (Rosemary, salt, black pepper, and usually anything spicy can be used to protect yourself or your home. Be careful of some spices getting wet, though. They can dye your counters/door frames 😅)
Incorporate your witches ladders/fabric wards into crafts.
Keep a broom by your main entrance.
Burn a stick of incense by windows and doors and focus on your intention (also be careful n do your research. No appropriating. No harming your animals with smoke.)
Low Energy Devotional Activities and Ways to Connect with the Gods
Let's be honest, religion and consistent practice can be HARD, especially when you're chronically ill, disabled, mentally ill or neurodivergent. This is a list of lower energy practices you can do to connect with your Gods when you're having a rough day.
Pray. You don't have to say the prayer. You don't have to do the full cleansing and offering. Just think about the prayer. It could be as simple as "'Deity Name', thank you. I'm thinking of you and appreciate you."
Dedicate any self care you do to the Gods. You've got to take meds? awesome. it's now a devotional activity.
If you can, light a tea light candle. You can think about who you're dedicating it to as you're lighting it.
Tell them about your day. Have a simple conversation with them (again, this can be in your head if needed).
Offer some water! Water is a great offering if you don’t have the energy to cook, collect or buy something.
Incense is also a great offering because you can light it then forget about it and your house won’t burn down (if you follow regular safety measures).
Resting. Your deities want you to be okay. Dedicating your rest to your deities is especially great if you feel guilty for allowing yourself time to heal.
Turn on a video of someone reading mythos!
Put on a deity playlist. There are plenty of pre-made ones on Spotify.
Veil or bind your hair! Whenever I’m low energy I’ll throw my hair in a ponytail and bind it that way. It doesn’t have to be extravagant.
Make a Pinterest board for them!
Post on a digital altar! There are plenty of discord servers that have digital altars and temples. You could also make a devotional Tumblr blog.
Change your phone lock/home screen to something that reminds you of your Deity.
I hope this is helpful to anyone who needs it! Take care of yourself first and foremost. If you don't think you can manage something on this list then thats perfectly fine too! you're not a bad person for not being able to do something spiritual or religious. Ultimately, these things are not a necessity. Don't stress :)
We're approaching Samhain so a good time to resurface this one because every year people ask - but what if my ancestors were terrible people?
So a quick rundown of other types of ancestors that we can work with. (The terms aren't mine but rather used in the community. They should help if you want to find more info on a specific type to work with.)
Ancestors of Flesh and Blood are biological ancestors (shared DNA)
Ancestors of Milk and Honey are those who nourish us (adoptive ancestors)
Ancestors of Bone are the ancestors of the land (bones of the earth connection)
Ancestors of Breath and Bread are those we share a vocation, craft or interest with.
Ancestors of Spirit and Soul are those who we share a spiritual path with.
What specific terms/phrases/etc. do you make sure to include in your petitions? Do you have like, a format or something that you use?
I love seeing your posts on my dash btw. You have a unique approach to the craft, and it’s really inspiring to me!

My Guide On Petitions
At this point I'm not even sure everything I'm going over here is related to petitions but we can't even agree on how to define witchcraft so this is MY guide on what I mean when I say petition and how to use said petitions.
What is A Petition?
(In case someone missed the other post)
There are two uses for the word petition that I have seen in the witchcraft community. One refers to a spell or an ingredient in a spell. The other refers to deity work, as in "petitioning a deity." Because I'm not Pagan and don't work with deities I'm not familiar with the second concept at all and will only be explaining the first type. In addition if you see me use the term petition I am referring to the first type.
A petition is sort of like an explanation or contract. It can just be your intent, or explain exactly how and when a spell will function like a set of instructions. Possibly a combination of the two. Petitions are kind of like candles. They can be the center of a spell, like when you dress a candle with a certain intent. Or they can be a component of a much more complex spell.
I used petitions for the longest time without knowing the word for them. I find they're really useful. They help me with those "desired result" spells I described in that I can very clearly be as specific as I want with my result. I also find it helps prevent backfire a ton. The only time a spell with a petition has backfired for me was when I forget to include a detail I usually would.
How Do I Make A Petition?
Just start with what you want the spell to do or why you're doing it to get the flow going. Then you can edit it, boil it down to the instructions and follow my suggestions below to complicate it if necessary. I usually type mine out first to perfect it and get it as simple, but articulate and detailed as possible. Then I write it in a color corresponding to my intent. You could of course skip to writing if that's easier, and not include the color correspondence. I find that doing this helps me familiarize myself with the petition which helps if I want to think it rather than physically include it. It also almost feels like charging it because I spend so much mental energy on it. I find this to be very useful.
Here are some things you may want to include:
Intent
Ingredients used & their purpose
Taglock if applicable
Time frame
Locations involved
Other qualifications that are necessary
Here are some examples:
"I will find and get a job with (insert qualifications, good example of the other qualifications category) in (insert town) by (insert date)"
"I will speak to (insert name and possibly other details) who lives at (insert location) before (insert date). (Insert ingredient) will provide speed for this process so the time frame I provided applies."
You could go on and on with each ingredient like that. You could also include other specifications as I often do. For example, say you have something important to discuss with the example person and they're busy. It's a private matter. Specify that there will happen to not be anyone else around.
This petition probably seems a little creepy. if I was doing this on a person I'd probably be sure to include something about not manipulating them and keep their boundaries in mind (not that I've ever done a spell like that) but a person was the best example I could think of to simply include all the details so that's what you got.
The examples here probably sound extremely formatted and monotone. My petitions usually sound a bit more personal because at the end I add specific details about how I want the situation to be. I couldn't come up with a general, not personal equivalent of this other than the (insert other qualifications here) so you'll just have to figure that part out on your own! Good luck.
How To Use It
How I Do It:
I usually just dump everything together because it's difficult to include some of my odd ingredients in a spell jar or candle spell for example. Taglock, petition, herbs and oils, tarot card, ect, boom. The petition sits there like an ingredient and is disposed of with the rest of the spell if necessary. Sometimes I keep them for future inspiration or usage again later.
Thinking it:
You could use the method I described above and never actually write it. Just memorize it. Charge it with thought. Maybe meditate with the idea.
Petitions as the focus:
If the petition is the main part of the spell (which mine usually aren't) and you wanna keep it simple you could do something as simple as meditate with it or light a candle over it.
Petitions as part of other spells:
if you want to start including petitions as components of spells you already do I suggest you think of a spell structure you already often use and then come up with a way to physically include a petition. Like candle magic? Pop that thing under the candle. Done. Spell jars your thing? Stick it in there. Maybe you like burying your spells? Drop it in the hole. You hopefully have some ideas now!
On methodology:
I had a specific anon ask what you do with the paper, if you burn it or something, or and if all depends on the person's own methodology. As you can see above it does all depend on the own person's methodology. For example I wouldn't personally burn a physical version of something I'm trying to attract unless it was a sigil designed for that. You might feel differently and have different experiences with methodology and symbolism.
Tips
Be specific.
I feel like I've already made this point very clear with the rest of this post but in case you need reminding. Be as specific as possible. Add details I didn't even mention if you want to.
Start simple.
Your petitions might start out more like affirmations. Sometimes mine are like that.
Use confident wording & energy when creating & working with a petition.
Not to be like the people who preach manifesting, but using positive & present tense language can help achieve this.
Watch for loopholes.
This is based on MY personal experience & beliefs, not objective info, something to consider. When I've done petitions before in the past I've gotten screwed over by making time frames vague & having a spell end before it was supposed to. Energy plays jokes sometimes.
See the goal through.
A good way to avoid getting loopholed is think through the whole thing. You want the spell to end AFTER a certain period. You don't just wanna find a job, you wanna GET the job. Hopefully you see what I mean.
Write about it.
I know I preach this on every post. Write about your readings. Write about your spells. Next I'll be giving you guys a tutorial on how I vent my feelings in my journal. I say this because I've been doing this for years and it's USEFUL. Save the spell instructions and that petition or a copy of it. Record if you get results or not over time. Look back on it.
I got many anons on this so I decided to dive in and make a whole guide. This anon got picked because they were nice and left themselves a little identifier! You're very kind. I'm starting to grasp having as many followers as I do, but I don't know that I'll ever get past being an inspiration. I feel like my approach is so boring and not inspired by anything.
I hope this answered everyone's questions!
Tip Your Witch! Thank you 💖
