Emirates Stadium, London

10 years ago today the Emirates Stadium was officially opened, with the Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial game.

Olympic Stadium, Montreal

40 yrs ago (17th July), the Olympic Stadium in #Montreal was opened. Such a great concept of architecture by Roger Taillibert (see Parc des Princes) but, unfortunately, a quite poor execution, with delays, structural issues and modifications affecting the stadium almost until the late 90s.

Stade Jean-Bouin, Paris

The ground near the Parc des Princes (you can see it these days from some aerial tv frames during #Euro2016) is the Stade Jean-Bouin, home of the local rugby team Stade Français.

Built in 1925, and first expanded in 1975, it was a simple oval with small terraces and an athletic track around the pitch. Now fully renovated (2010-2013) it is a modern rugby ground that can accomodate 20,000 fans, with a wavy state-of-the-art roof wrapping up the whole structure.

Stamford Bridge, London.

Stamford Bridge was opened today, 28th April, in 1877 as the London Athletic Club ground (it will be used as so until 1904).

Stadion De Meer, Amsterdam (now demolished)

The ground that saw the footballing epic of Johan Cruijff, both as player and manager of Ajax Amsterdam.

Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

Today, in 1925, Murrayfield Stadium was opened, with a rugby match between Scotland and England (the scots won 14-11). Built on a land purchased three years before, it featured a splendid main stand in what could be called a simple edwardian style (see Craven Cottage and Ibrox for a similar design).

Valencia fan dies of heart attack after equalizer vs. Barcelona

Sad news has emerged from La Liga as Valencia have confirmed that one of their supporters died following the team’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona. 

The 43-year-old suffered a heart attack after celebrating Santi Mina’s 86th-minute equalizer, and was rushed to hospital but died late Saturday evening. Los Che confirmed the loss in a statement on the club’s official website.

“Valencia CF lament the irreparable loss of a fan after the match in Mestalla. The club is at the disposal of the family and shares the pain of all their loved ones.”

Our thoughts are with the family.
