Heather grimaced as Nick flicked up. The risk of that happening was possible, but she didn’t think he would actually do it. Taking back the phone towards her in a scramble, Heather reviewed his profile again. “Who knew I had my age limit all the way,” she said with a smile. “I’m joking, I don’t discriminate.” She was being truthful, always on the lookout for those D.C. sugar daddies. “Oh hey, he’s called Nick too and works at the Post. What are the odds?” 

Even with the grimace/shot to the ego considered, it took a fair amount of effort for Nick to hold back a smile as Heather all but snatched her phone back from him. The hand that was holding the phone came to rest between the pair on the table, fingers tapping against the wood - half out of habit, half in an attempt to irritate her further. “Good to know, pet.” Nick smiled, craning his neck for a better look. “Dunno but I know at least three Nicks.”

Work had slowed enough for Heather to be lulled into a rhythm that allowed her to take some time to swipe on Tinder. “I’m just waiting for summer to come round so that all the fresh meat — I mean, interns, of course — can add some variety around here.” There was enough playfulness in her voice to suggest sarcasm, but not enough to be convincing. Her nose crinkled as she continued flicking to the left of her phone screen. She was rarely seen without the device. It had her music and social life, controlled her work life, and was rarely out of her sight. In an out of character move, she turned phone over to the other. “What do you think? Yay or nay for this one?”  

“Superlike,” Nick replied, reaching out and flicking the photo of himself upwards before Heather had a chance to react otherwise. It wasn’t so much that he wanted to match with her (although, if he was being honest with himself then he probably would go there - personality to one side) but rather, that he wanted to see her profile. “Seems like he’d be a decent bloke.”

I hate to be like this but probably the only thing that Nick likes about Adam is the fact he’s hot.

Nick doesn’t know Adam very well so all he really has to say about him is that he’s yet another member of a political dynasty taking up a seat in the Senate that could belong to someone better and more deserving of it. That’s something he fucking hates as a general concept but that coupled with the fact that Adam is a Republican is enough to make Nick hate him specifically. He has nothing against Adam on an individual basis but hates all that he stands for and has seen nothing as of yet that would change his mind on that.

☥: If events in your muse’s life had gone very differently to how they did, what would they have done with their life? What sort of occupation might they have chosen for themselves and would they, in your opinion, be happier than they are now?

If Nick’s father hadn’t been given the chance to attend university, I think Nick’s life would have been very dramatically different. He’s always been (academically) intelligent and hardworking but his family lacked the money to send him to a better school, even when he earned a place at one, so, most likely, he would have stayed at home and gotten a job that helped to support them rather than gone on to further education. Had he been born a few years earlier, he probably would have left school early to become a miner but as the mines were closed in his early teens, he couldn’t do that and probably would have graduated then taken an apprenticeship in manual labour/gotten a job working in a factory. I think, had his life taken this path, he would have gone to university as a mature student (in his late 20s/30s) but I don’t know if he’d have ended up working in politics. I could see him maybe going into academia (pay depending) or working in recruitment.

Had his father gotten the chance to attend university and graduated as an academic but chosen not to move to the US, Nick would definitely have stayed in England and probably gone on to work in the British Parliament in the same capacity that he worked for the House. He loves DC but had he not been forced to move to the city as a teenager, he never would have taken it upon himself to even visit.

In the first scenario, I don’t think he’d have been happier but in the second one, I think maybe he’d be slightly happier but only by nature of the fact that he’d be able to visit his family easier (otherwise he’d be pretty much the same).

On a related side note, I feel like he’d be happier if he had kids but he doesn’t think that so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve had a think and I’m not sure of the ashamed one but the thing Nick is most proud of in life is his work in the House; there’s a number of things I could say here but I think assisting in the passing of Obamacare is one of the big ones that’s worth mentioning.
